Besides Mission Logs, roleplayers can use this area to craft Research Files about various topics, or submit entries to show off their character's homes or places of business. Research files differ from Mission Logs in that they are independently taken endeavors that don't require going on a mission to write. They serve a variety of purposes in our game. They may be to detail interesting things about a specific location, or an original species that someone wants to share, or they may be just for fun, like a character studying an invasive species from somewhere out of the multiverse, or phenomenon from a world they visited. Research files have different requirements depending on their purpose, which you can find out more about below.

Please note that once a research file has been approved, it will be locked. If you would like to make changes or additions after this, please contact staff. Homes and places of business can be edited any time you'd like after initial approval, but we do ask that you speak to staff if any of those changes are huge or might affect the world around your character. Like if your character wants to drain a nearby lake or build a giant statue on top of their house, those are things the community around them would take note of, and they need to be discussed.

In order to submit a research file, home, or place of business for approval, you need to first make a new post in the Mission Logs, Homes & Research Files forum (staff will move it over to the appropriate sub-category for you after it's been reviewed and approved). Title the post with Research File: The Subject of Your Research, or a title for your home or business. It can be as simple as, "Jimmy John's House" or as complicated as, "Jimmy John's Sandwich Manor & Hummus Ranch".

In order to complete the entry, you can fill out one of the templates listed here for you, or you can submit your own. Either is acceptable as long as it has most of the same information. It's recommended that you at least take a peek at the provided templates for info's sake. Once done, link the entry to staff in the #application-room in Discord and wait for them to get back to you.

If your submission is accepted, you'll get the Research Division Seal of Approval on your post. If your file needs revisions before it can be accepted, we'll let you know in DMs what needs to be changed before we can accept it.

In order to be accepted, entries need to meet the following requirements:

If you chose to use your own design rather than a template, it still needs to be neat and well detailed. A single paragraph with no formatting isn't going to cut it. Make things look nice and put a little effort into your information.

If you're writing a research file, the file must be information not already covered in another research file. Take a look through the titles and make sure your subject hasn't already been covered. If it has been, you can ask the original author of that research file (or staff if that author is no longer with us) if you can add your submission onto their file instead. Add ons can’t claim full file points, but may claim 25 points per every 400 words.

Research Files that are intended to convey necessary information to other players, such as information about an original location in play or an original species do not have to be written in a character's 'voice'. Content that is covering information that can easily be looked up, such as writing about an existing species from a fandom world must be written in the 'voice' of the character making the submission to ensure some uniqueness. Original entries written in-character anyway will be awarded an extra 20 points for extra effort.

Please note that even if you don't write your entry in a character's voice, you'll still need to pick a character to submit the post under, as this area is an IC area and posting as an OOC account hides your post in an OOC tab. Posting under a character account just keeps things neater and easier for reading as a result.

Before you submit original content to AotM with the intent of sharing it with others, please consider if this is something that can be handled maturely. By nature, there will come occasional misunderstandings between players and content creators. We as staff always try to assume ignorance over malice and ask that you do the same. When actual problems arise, we will always strive to protect content creators in a fair manner. However, on the other foot, if you cannot in your heart of hearts cede some control over your creations to other people, as this is the nature of collaborative creation, we would strongly urge you to reconsider sharing your content for open use.

Ask First status on your creations may be a better option, or in the case of World Files, 'Creator Missions Only', which allow you greater control of how other players interact with your works. Consider what is best for you.

Submitting content also opens you up to questions about that content from other players. If this is something that may annoy you, or something you feel you cannot field kindly, then please refrain from submitting content to these spaces. There are plenty of other aspects of AotM to enjoy, and this part of it isn't for everyone.
