To get from Sanctuary to The Dome and Harbor, one must travel through tunnels deep beneath the mountains. These tunnels go on for many miles, and once upon a time, one traveled them in the dark and silence, hoping something didn't sniff you out and try to kill you. Now that Harbor's denizens have gotten comfortable, you still have to watch your back, but it's mostly people doing the killing. The long, stony halls beneath the mountains are well-lit and dotted with questionable hideaways and vendors selling their wares now. One of the biggest attractions on the way to the Dome-- at least through Harbor controlled tunnels-- is the Hall of the Mountain King. The Hall is a huge cavern that has been reinforced, lit up, and turned into an unholy spectacle of noise and violence. The main cavern is an arena pit filled with sand, surrounded by bleachers and more comfortable seating for higher-paying customers. People pay both to watch, and to fight, and there are usually plenty of smaller matches going on at any given time. The real draw is the Championships, though. Applicants fight for both fame and a hefty prize of coin and goods. They must run a grueling gauntlet of terrifying beasts, deadly obstacles, and each other before one soul finally faces the Reigning Champion. If they can beat the Champion, they will take their spot and their crown until the next Championship, where another will get the chance to defeat them. The crown is an intimidating piece too-- gold plated and made with real Carnotaurus teeth. Reigning Champions are treated very well by Harbor's denizens, not only because of the fame aspect, but because disrespecting the Champion means disrespecting the Tyrant King-- Harbor's most prominent crime boss. Other shows are also occasionally held in the arena, but the fights are what it's famous for. There are also a few smaller side rooms with mini sandpits for more private fights, and a bar selling the usual suspects. The Hall can be found fairly easily along the main route, close to the Dome's side, a little down one of the tributary passages near its exit, since dinosaurs can't be brought in through Lily Island. It's marked by a large sign flanked by torches, and crowned with the infamous skull of Crooked Jaw Bill. The animals for the fights are kept off site and brought in the day before a match to keep them fresh. They are kept in pens and cages in the tunnels behind the main arena. |
