My years among the scaled ones burned all these things away and replaced them with an understanding of what diseases would kill me; what plants would kill me; what insects would kill me; what words would kill me; and what I could do to prevent all the aforementioned situations from coming to pass.

    To survive in the south, I learned that it was not necessary to be the fastest or the strongest or the smartest. All that was necessary was a willingness to be more ruthless than whatever wished to kill me on that particular day.

    I've come to consider it a virtue.
