I'm thinking of having the character icon have an SVG mask overlay with 'pixels disintegrating', using something like this. Possibly using a lot of glowy borders.

Alright I THINK this is as close as I'm going to get in the design stage. 
I might decide to change a bunch of things as I code but we'll get there when we get there.
