A small coterie in the king's colours arrive near midday on Saturday. A tall llama stands out in front of the tavern, a bright yellow scarf flapping around his neck as he speaks. His voice, loud and clear, carries the announcement to all nearby, and he repeats himself every half hour for three hours before stepping down. After a stop in the tavern, the king's men travel on down the road.

"Hear ye, hear ye. Tragedy has struck our fair country. The heir to the great house Ayoubis, Lord Anghar, was found slain in his bed, murdered in his sleep. An investigation into the vicious attack has been opened and all resources are being used to apprehend the killer of the benevolent noble. Some suspect Count Emirava Ti'Ayoubis' refusal to aid the rebels in their revolt against our glorious Majesty, King Callistin, the first of his name, to be the motive behind this most grievous act. His Majesty shall spare no expense in the hunt for the assassin and is offering a significant reward for any information that leads to the apprehension of the rebels responsible.

"If you have any information about this dreadful incident, please bring it to Sir Rexington. Out of misplaced sympathy, some may think to harbour the criminal or criminals responsible, or otherwise protect them. To those we say, you will be caught and punished to the full extent of the law."

In the days to come, the soldiers' presence in and around the small tavern settlement seems to multiply. They patrol day and night, four in the immediate vicinity and several more scattered on the outskirts, tromping past farmers' fields and harassing any who dare look at them sideways as they boldly eavesdrop on the local residents. Intrusive and rude, the soldiers nonetheless comport themselves with tense restraint, ordered by Sir Rexington himself to use force only when necessary.

There are whispers, among those who dare whisper, that blame is to be placed not upon the rebels but upon the mercurial king. In the days following the murder no rebel faction has stepped forward to claim the achievement. But, loyal to the crown as they were, what cause could the king have had to order the murder of the Ayoubis heir?

House Ayoubis rules the neighbouring county of Moorim. Allied to House Sherazi, they are a fiercely proud house of equines who pride themselves on their purity. It is said that they do not allow members of other species to enter their private quarters.
