    ⠀⠀➥Choosing a Race

⠀⠀The Bermuda Pyramid Galaxy is home to many diverse aliens and humanoids alike. The races below are left vague so you can adapt your character as you see fit- and you can even create your own race if you so choose. If you are playing a character from another continuity, please click here.

۞ Androids: Technological constructs that are created instead of born. Your character can be converted into one ⠀⠀⠀upon arrival to the galaxy, and because androids lack physical restrictions while traveling in space, they can be one of ⠀⠀⠀the easiest races for new players to make.
Androids are living beings that are fully constructed with technology instead of having evolved biologically. Some may have idiosyncrasies depending upon their software; as long as their construction is sound however, they are free to travel throughout the galaxy as they see fit. Most androids are constructed by Dr Domo.

۞ Cyborgs: Cyborgs can be any race as a basis- what sets them apart is their bodily integration of technology (eg., a ⠀⠀⠀cybernetic limb).
Cyborgs have bodies that are any mixture of organic matter and technology. Their integrated machinery often gives them different capabilities than their solely organic counterparts, though any advancement one gains must also come with an equal disadvantage. Cyborgs are different from those who use protective gear or technology normally, in that what they use is entwined and a part of their body itself.

۞ Humans: Although not as populous as other races, humans are still a permanent fixture in the galaxy.
Over the centuries, some Earthlings have wound up transported to this distant galaxy by varying means. Although small in number compared to Palians or Eareans, they have established themselves as a permanent presence in the Bermuda Triangle Galaxy. These humans live in colonies, and may also be referred to as Terrans.

۞ Humanoids: Evolving separately from traditional humans, they have unique features such as colorful skin, horns, or fur.
Human-like races exist all throughout the universe, having evolved on numerous worlds across multiple galaxies. Players are free to invent their own humanoids and to add features to make them unique, such as colorful skin, horns, or even fur.

۞ Atheons: An advanced race of unknown appearance. Supposedly they have an entire space station colony, but its ⠀⠀⠀whereabouts are unknown.
According to many historians in the region, the Atheons were the first advanced race to develop in this little corner of space. Remnants of their technology can be found upon countless worlds in the sector, some of which is still functional. There are rumors that there is an Atheon station still operating in the region, and if so, it would be a treasure trove for those daring enough to board it.

    Appearance: Unknown.

۞ Aquivers: An ungulate space-faring race with short colored fur, no mouths, and cranial stalk-like protrusions.
The Aquivers are a unique race of space-faring humanoids from the planet Evera. They are covered in short blue or purple fur and have hoofed feet, large eyes, pointed ears, stalk-like protrusions from their heads, and no mouths.

۞ Eareans: Beautiful, slender centauroids with pale iridescent skin. They devote their time to the arts and ⠀⠀⠀philosophy, rather than expansionism.
The Eareans are a beautiful race of slender, alien centauroids from the world of Ettarius whose technology rivals even that of the Palians. They devote their efforts towards the arts and philosophy, however, rather than the expansion of their people.

Appearance: Similar to the Pearls from Valerian, but centaurian.

۞ Ohachi: A short insectoid-like race often renown for their financial, diplomatic, and trade skills.
Short, insectoid masters of trade, the Ohachi are renown merchants and tradesmen who are also frequently sought out for their diplomatic prowess. The Ohachi are not fighters, but the financial backing of an Ohachi trade alliance is practically a prerequisite to a successful campaign.

۞ Palians: Humanoids with colored skin and pointed ears. Technologically, socially, and militarily advanced, they ⠀⠀⠀boast a peaceful ideology.
One of the most influential races in the galaxy, the Palians possess more colonies than any other local species. Technologically advanced and socially cosmopolitan, they boast impressive technology, a powerful military, and peaceful ideology. The Palian Republic is said to be the beacon of civilization, and their homeworld is known as Palia.

Appearance: Humanoid with dusky blue or green skin, flat noses, pointed ears, and completely devoid of any hair on the tops of their heads (although their men do occasionally grow beards).

۞ Tokipona: A diminutive, furrechild-like race that love scavenging whatever they can get their hands on.
A diminutive, childlike race from the world of Kaholint, the Tokipona build no technology of their own, but scavenge from whatever they can get their hands on. They are often seen smudged with dirt on space stations and backwater worlds, hoarding whatever tech they can.

Appearance: Similar to furre children, but with brightly colored hair and eyes.

۞ Tunglers: Gigantic humanoids with alabaster skin and a penchant for violence. They are often raiders or pirates.
The Tunglers are a race of gigantic humanoids- standing eight to twelve feet tall, they have alabaster skin and no body hair. Infamous for their violent tendencies, they are quick to form hostilities with other races, and are oftentimes pillagers or pirates. They have universally rejected membership into the Galaxy Federation, and tensions run high between the two.

Appearance: Similar to the Engineers of the “Alien” film series.

۞ Wari: A nomadic, reptilian race whose home planet was destroyed during a civil war. They seek new places to ⠀⠀⠀colonize.
The Wari are a tragic race. Nearly one hundred years ago, their world became entrenched in civil war that turned nuclear and left the entire system uninhabitable. Those who escaped live in nomadic bands aboard scattered fleets of ships, desperately searching for a new world to colonize.

    Appearance: Reptilian.

    ⠀⠀➥Picking a Faction

⠀⠀A faction is an optional social group for your character. Since teams are often created spontaneously, joining a faction shows legitimacy, and how your character can assist on a mission. Factions make finding a crew or employer easier, with additional perks including job placement and access to various networking events.

۞ Defenders: Bodyguards, mercenaries, peacekeepers. Able to physically defend themselves and their employers when the need ⠀⠀⠀arises, most people that excel in combat fall under this category. Some might be a part of the Galaxy Federation's Peacekeeping Squad, or the ⠀⠀⠀armed forces or law enforcement of their local planet.

۞ Explorers: Xenoseekers, linguists, archaeologists. Whether working in a team or going solo, explorers excel in finding, recording, and ⠀⠀⠀surviving in harsh unknown alien territories. They often utilize stealth technology to avoid danger, and always have navigator's tools, a ⠀⠀⠀tronslatr, and foodratr handy.

۞ Medics: Doctors, nurses, field medics. Able to administer first-aid and perform complex surgeries during even the most daring ⠀⠀⠀missions, medics are invaluable for their expertise and skills. Not only do they need to treat a variety of humanoid and alien lifeforms, ⠀⠀⠀they also need to understand the various biochemical barriers of the galaxy. Equipped with biometric and atmospheric scanners, some even ⠀⠀⠀have droid assistants aiding them in their work.

۞ Merchants: Traders, crafters, blue-collar workers. The most diverse faction, most mundane nine-to-five jobs fall under this ⠀⠀⠀category. Some members may be a part of the Merchant Marines.

۞ Techs: Mechanics, engineers, hackers. Techheads can have diverse backgrounds in anything related to technology, whether that's ⠀⠀⠀making or repairing ships, weapons, or androids- or even hacking into data systems or buildings. Some may be members of the Galactic ⠀⠀⠀Corps of Engineers.

    ⠀⠀➥Badges

⠀⠀A badge is a Federation-mandated identification card that lists a person's basic stats, much like a lite resume. 'Card' is a loose term- these badges can take the form of anything from traditional badges, to jewelry, to a small internal plate inside of androids. Even new arrivals to the galaxy are given badges.

    ⠀⠀۞Badge Format:
    ➣Name:
    ➣Original Planet:
    ➣Species:
    ➣Faction:
    ➣Specialities:

If your character has a criminal history, please include the following:

    ➣Age:
    ➣Criminal History:
    ➣Height/Weight/Biographic Info:
    ➣Hologram

Note: this information is only viewable by government officials and high-level security drones.

    ⠀⠀➥Character Limitations

⠀⠀We want our universe to be fun, and to promote creativity in ways that keep our sci-fi vibe. It’s okay to gloss over some of the difficulties that certain alien interactions would have, but we have to draw the line somewhere to maintain an appropriate atmosphere; this is sci-fi, not fantasy.

    ⠀⠀
    Advantages = Disadvantages/Limitations

For every advantage you give your character, you need equal disadvantages and limitations in order to be fair to other players.

Example of balanced sci-fi shapeshifters from K.A. Applegate:

    Advantages:
    • Animorphs can physically but grotesquely transform into any creature that has DNA. Called morphing. The science behind it has as much explanation as possible.
    • (Notice that they don’t shapeshift because of a magical ability and automatically turn into the shape they want.)
    • Animorphs can use thought-speak to communicate while in a morph.

    Disadvantages:
    • 2 hour time limit: Their main drawback. They have to morph back to their original form before the time is up or else they get stuck in that form permanently, unable to morph anymore.
    • They have to also be able to keep track of time while in their morph in order to avoid being stuck in it.
    • The more dangerous the creature, the harder it is to collect their DNA via touch.
    • They have to deal with the strong instincts of whatever creature they morph into.

    Limitations:
    • Animorphs had to come across and use complex technology to gain both of these abilities. The tech has a nanobiology explanation in how it moves molecules around.
    • In order to morph at all, they must first collect DNA by absorbing it through touch as their original self.
    • When they morph back to their original form, they are extremely tired and can’t morph again for quite some time.

    ⠀⠀
    ≠ hybrids

This includes both hybrids of different races, as well as hybrids of similar racial species. Interracial mating is fine- if different alien races want to exchange chemicals, we aren’t here to put a damper on that, though it may mean running into potential biochemical issues.

Why no hybrids or hybrid children? If humans and chimpanzees, so close genetically, can’t even produce offspring, don’t expect entirely different species or races to create children organically.

Alternative: Have Dr Domo create your character as a hybrid-looking android, or a hybrid-looking android to serve as your child for a fee (and that’s not creepy at all).

    ⠀⠀
    ≠ magic

Try to imagine sci-fi alternatives to magic, such as advanced technology or even specialized alien biology. If you need help with particular ideas, we're happy to chat!

    ⠀⠀
    Canon Characters/Races

While characters and their races must be original in terms of backstory and family connections, players are free to incorporate various elements from existing media. In other words, you are free to draw on existing works for inspiration, but please do not make your character a carbon copy of an existing character, or race, from another canon.

For example, a humanoid character may use Luke Skywalker as a name and have the same appearance, as well as be a soldier for a revolutionary group. That group cannot exactly be the Rebel Alliance from Star Wars, however, and the character cannot be from Tatooine.

The race of your character must also not be a carbon copy from existing media. The race may look similar to one that's preexisting (for example a Wookiee, Tusken Raider, or Twi'lek), but the race's history and home planet cannot be the same, nor can the name of the race itself.

A sampling of Cosmos characters by Aveilthe!

Before making/roleplaying anything, please read through ALL sections under Roleplay, NOT just these bullet points!

    We especially welcome androids!
    • You can easily reboot any existing character using the Dr Domo android concept. This means you won't have to deal with all the headaches Biochemical Barriers cause with interplanetary travel!

Bermuda Pyramid Galaxy natives are also highly encouraged! Feel free to design your own native alien species, too! And here is a list of some well known native options you are also welcome to make your character into or even incorporate into their backstory. Their appearances are all intentionally vague so that you can detail your character how you like (as long as they overall fit the description).

Note that original aliens you make of any variety are wonderful, though if we see an overpowered one we may ask you to make more disadvantages and limitations.

Regarding humans and any variation of them:
    • While Earth is currently set in the present day for this universe, humans have been inadvertently transported to the Bermuda Pyramid Galaxy for centuries.
    • This means you can play any of the following:
      • Historical humans: Those in stasis for all this time due to some kind of alien interference and are only just now waking up. (This formula will let you keep the backstory of a character from, say, a traditionally medieval setting.)
      • Modern humans: Those of today's world.
      • Descendants of humans: Those whose ancestors eventually settled one of the Terran colony worlds in the Bermuda Pyramid Galaxy and are therefore familiar with the futuristic worlds and space travel already.
    • Technologically advanced humanoids: You may also choose to design your own original non-Earth origin humanoids (similar to the humanoid aliens in Guardians of the Galaxy, Star Wars, Star Trek, etc.) and develop your own unique backstories for them, their homeworlds, and cultures. These characters can look similar to humans from Earth, or have their own unique features (such as unusual skin colors, horns, etc).

Regarding characters borrowed from material of other canons: all characters must be original in terms of backstory and family connections, however players are free to incorporate various elements from existing media.

    Example:

    • A humanoid character may use Luke Skywalker as a name and have the same appearance, as well as be a soldier for a revolutionary group, but that group cannot exactly be the Rebel Alliance from Star Wars and the character cannot be from Tattooine.
    • In other words, you are free to draw on existing works for inspiration, but please do not make your character a carbon copy of an existing character from another canon.

    CHARACTER LIMITATIONS

This is sci-fi, not fantasy. We want it to be fun but we also want to promote creativity in ways that keep the feel we’re going for. It’s okay to handwave some of the more difficult complications that alien interaction would have for the sake of Fun, but we have to draw the line somewhere to maintain a sci-fi atmosphere.

That said, here’s our lines in the sand:

Balance is critical, especially for alien design.
    • For every advantage you give your character, you need equal disadvantages and limitations in order to be fair to other players.

    No hybrid children or aliens.
    • Doesn’t matter whether they’re cross-species or cross-aliens.
    • That said, cross alien mating is fine -- if different aliens want to exchange chemicals, we aren’t here to put a damper on that, though it may mean your character runs into biochemical issues. See Biochemical Barriers below for more info!

Why no hybrids or hybrid children? If humans can’t even produce a humanzee, don’t expect different species, let alone aliens among other aliens to be able to create children organically.

    • Alternatives: Have Dr Domo create a hybrid-looking Android to serve as your child for a fee. (And that’s not creepy at all.)

Magic isn’t permitted in our setting.
    • Try to imagine sci-fi alternatives to your existing design that have limits and disadvantages. In this Continuity, we use either technology or biology to explain any advances. If you need help with ideas we’d be happy to chat!

    TECHNOLOGY

    Badges

Every sapient creature in the galaxy has a badge that indicates that person’s skills, and can be easily updated by the wearer on the fly. It’s like a visual resume. They also have a badge reader attached to their body somewhere (or for androids, it’s programmed automatically)

    Badge Format:
    • Name
    • Original planet
    • Species
    • Faction
    • Specialties
Drones have access to more in depth information about each person if they've been arrested before:
    • Age
    • Criminal history
    • Height/Weight/Biographic info
    • Hologram

The Federation mandates everyone have one to maintain order and it is enforced galaxy-wide. It also is used for monetary transactions -- credits (the currency) are transferred through badges.

Arrivals to the galaxy are always presented an ID badge -- if anyone is found without their badge and there's evidence they're not a new arrival, they can be arrested. In other words, having no badge is like driving a car without a license plate except enforced much more. Denizens are scanned regularly by the drones throughout the galaxy. After facing jail time, they will be given another badge but their biographic info is documented thoroughly. Repeat offenders get longer jail time each time progressively. Read this page if you're wanting to make a character who doesn't always wear a badge.

    Dr Domo & Day-to-day tech

    Protective Equipment

Gear specially made to help aliens survive differences in atmosphere, levels of background/cosmic radiation, soil conditions, pathogens and parasites, etc. when living on any other planets that aren’t their original one.

Only available if the alien can convey very detailed information specific to their home world in order to have the equipment be created.

But, if this alien's planet is already known to Dr Domo via other representatives, this information will have already been documented so they would be able to easily get the equipment.

    Language

Dr Domo created Tronslatr technology in different physical styles to be affixed to / worn on the body of organic beings.

Androids have the languages programmed and updated in their system already.

However, any time a completely new sapient alien species arrives, it takes a while before Tronslatr can parse the language, translate it to the other existing languages, and distribute updates to everyone’s devices.

This means that if your character’s species is completely new, no one will understand them when they arrive.

We ask you to honor this in your RPs, at least for the first one or two of them! You can assume that your character is eventually visited by a drone of the Tronslatr lab to get their language documented.

    Food

Dr Domo created Foodratr tech that can create biologically appropriate food/drink for each alien.. provided it has some example sources to recreate them from.

Big city bars, restaurants, etc. utilize Foodratrs rather than cooks, so people go there for the social sphere mainly.. or, y’know.. to hit on the bartender/patrons.

On the other hand, natives on their native planet can go to their authentic places for consumables.

Don’t expect your character to survive if they consume alien food (food not made by their tech).. There’s too many Biochemical Barriers for that to be plausible. Revisit that section for more info.

If your character didn’t bring food with them on their journey, and they’re a new species to Bermuda Pyramid.. They will die. Luckily for your character, Dr Domo has drones that like to find dead/dying bodies, bring them back to the lab, and reincarnate them into androids.

Androids can’t eat food (they do need parts repaired and updated, though).

Other tech (not issued by Dr Domo)

    Weapons

A wide variety of weaponry exists across the galaxy, from energy-based weapons (i.e. lasers, plasma-based, etc) to projectiles, firing bullets or rounds either with the use of a detonating cartridge or electromagnetic coils (AKA gauss cannons).

Small-arms weaponry is legal to possess, as are larger guns (such as rifles), however heavy-duty weapons (i.e. rocket launchers) are strictly regulated by most planetary governments (in other words, seek out staff approval before roleplaying a character with one.)

Feel free to be creative in developing your character’s weapons (though again, no magic), but keep in mind that anything that seems military-grade or for more than personal defense would be immediately confiscated if identified by a drone/law enforcement.

Read over Planetary Governance if you're wanting to give your character iffy weaponry anyway.

    Special Tech

Most planets with cities have a robust marketplace where characters can purchase or upgrade unique pieces of technology. Cybernetic implants are easy to come by (albeit costly) and can enhance a person’s body to a significant degree. Other items, such as cloaking technology, are strictly illegal and require delving into the black market -- a determined person’s best bet would be to seek out such technology on The Hub.

Check over Planetary Governance if you're wanting to use cloaking tech in a public setting on a planet with a strict government.

    Drones

Separate ones are issued by Dr Domo and the galaxy-wide government. Dr Domo drones focus on their specific tech, while government ones enforce civil behavior in highly trafficked areas.

    Spaceships

Spaceships come in all shapes and sizes, and are available for the right cost -- from small shuttles that cost about as much as a car and can be used for travel within a system, to larger ships that can ferry one between different stars. The larger the vessel, the higher the cost, and a general rule of thumb is that the non-affluent cannot afford anything more than a shuttle on their own. However teams of individuals working toward a common cause and pooling their resources, or taking a business loan out, can afford to purchase one of these vessels.

Warships or vessels requiring crews of more than a couple dozen individuals are limited to government entities. While spacecraft are permitted to be armed for self-defense, armaments should only be capable of destroying another vessel of similar size and defensive capabilities. Anything more significant (such as planet-busting force) would attract the attention of the Galaxy Federation and result in immediate seizure.

    CURRENCY

The standard currency issued by the Galaxy Federation is called Credits.

This money exists mostly as digital currency that characters can transfer using their identification badges, but it’s possible to obtain hard cash as well (especially if you’re planning on doing some under-the-table business).

Roughly correspond to U.S. dollars in terms of units and purchasing power. In other words, 1 credit has roughly the same purchasing power as 1 dollar.

Small shuttles cost about as much as a real life car, while medium-sized ships would take the same investment as a house. Larger ships are virtually impossible for anything but the affluent to afford, and are impractical to own unless used for a business purpose.

    BIOCHEMICAL BARRIERS

Main point of consideration: Sapient aliens are not just weird humans from another country, and alien animals are not just exotic new species. So please don’t treat them that way in your design or in RP.

    Take it from Tropes:
“Since aliens evolve in environments vastly different to terrestrial ones, dealing with differences in atmosphere, levels of background/cosmic radiation, soil conditions, pathogens and parasites, etc., it’s unlikely their biology would be compatible with other aliens or planets.”

    Food
Alien food is not human food, and human food is not alien food.
    • Therefore, don’t have your characters share food or attempt to eat random shit on alien planets and expect to survive unscathed. How we handle what characters safely can eat is through tech. Technology section below covers the deets.
    • Note that this also applies to aliens who you want to have eat humans or other aliens. There would be the same biochemical barrier applying to them, and they wouldn’t be able to safely eat them. Therefore, predators should still only prey on their own fellow planetary creatures for consumption .. but that doesn’t mean you can’t still have hunting characters!
    • Androids can’t safely consume food/drink, but do need to have parts repaired / updated over time.

    Disease
Diseases/pathogens simply cannot easily pass cross species.
    • Even on Earth, most diseases do not ever cross species (barring livestock which are kept in close proximity over long periods of time). It takes a long time before pathogens can adapt to the physiology of another species.
    • Androids can get technological viruses, but not organic ones.

    Atmosphere / Radiation
Without having protective gear on when going outside stabilized environments, if you’re still an organic being.. You will probably be harmed from exposure over time, even if the planet is oxygen rich, because no planet is the same. It will have had differing OTHER atmospheric gases, radiation, gravity, and air pressure.
    • Therefore, organic aliens often live segregated, though they can enter each others’ stabilized environments with protective gear.
    • If aliens are entering similar environments to the ones they come from, they can probably handle it without gear, but not for a long time without being harmed.
    • Androids are immune to most "normal" planetary conditions, barring any extreme ones. Characters with organic bodies native to the planet they're on will be fine.
    • If your character isn't able to convey the composition of their own original planet in detail enough for Dr Domo to create protective gear, they will eventually die and have to be remade into either an android OR a newly native planet organic being.
