The Township of Bitter Springs is located in the rolling countryside with a temperate climate consisting of warm summers and mild winters. It is a smaller town, boasting one noble family, two knights, and a young, unmarried lord. The town proper has a general store, a blacksmith, a carpenter, a bakery with designs on being a patisserie, a dressmaker and tailor, a tavern, a post office, a small constabulary, a church, and a doctor's office.

The year is 1874, horse drawn carriages are still the most common conveyance in the village, though several young mages in the nearest city are reported to be working on horseless carriages. There is a train station one town over, in Sweet Water, which is half a day's journey away. Magic runs thick through the veins of the inhabitants of this country, and is in common use in everyday life, from cleaning cantrips to self lighting lanterns along the roads.

Class is still a very important features of life in Bitter Springs, but with such a small town, often those with a good flair for social graces will find themselves invited to parties hosted by the upper echelons of society. New money is sometimes looked down upon by those with noble lineage, but with all of the magical and technological advancements occurring in the big cities, it is becoming more common for new millionaires to purchase old estates.

Religion is a very open thing in this world, and the church in Bitter Springs is used for worship by many different faiths. The man who runs it cycles through celebrating a different religion every day, and can be sought out for advice on moral dilemmas, though generally Father Delton just lets people talk themselves to a solution.

The noble house of Greenswale owns a grand estate to the North of the village, and Lord Eric Greenswale, now in his fortieth decade, is married to a much younger Lady Aileen Greenswale, in her twentieth decade. They are expecting to add to the family soon. These elves live the high life, and are often not at home, visiting High Water, the nearest big city, instead.

Sir Ian Swift and his wife Ellen have a very large family living in their large house in town, and it seems like the Swift children and grandchildren are always up to some sort of new trouble, though none of the red-headed mice have an air of malice about them.

Sir Robert Mansfield, with his wife Sally, keeps a modest estate, more fancy farmhouse, on the edge of the village, and has three daughters and a single infant son. The Naga's cows give the best milk in the county, and his dairy maids are well paid for their work.

Lord Jhaes Maksa has recently acquired the abandoned estate to the west of the village, long thought to be haunted. He is a quiet man who keeps to himself, though has employed several in the village to aid in his reconstruction efforts. He is obviously a foreigner, but other than that, little is known of him.
