  • The Van

    Vehicle Type: Modified "Camper" Conversion Van

    License Plate: Johto

    If you live in Johto there is a chance you're familiar with this vehicle in passing. It's been his mode of transportation and home for a good decade now. The address on his identification is for a P.O. Box in Goldenrod City.

    It gets checked every couple of months.

    The research vehicle is really more of a small bus, resembling its owner with its blatant patchwork and myriad of stickers. It's been altered for living on the road and taking abuse, with windows tinted and frame reinforced, fitted with a bicycle rack, satellite dish, and pull out awning.

    It was once solid black, but is now partially silver where paint has been scraped away; the poor thing is monstrously beaten up from driving off roads. The years of traveling show.

    The odd researcher is very much a van nomad who can't seem to stay in one place for too long - when he does settle down for short periods of time he'll still remain living from his van, seeming to prefer the fringes of society. Given that he's been living out of this van for a large part of the past decade, he has quite a bit more to his name than most typical trainers.

    In general will park outside of civilization - finding a place to sleep for the night where he won't be considered a disturbance is not always easy. A lot of showers are taken at Pokemon Centers. Nick certainly abuses their facilities and is well known by the Nurse Joy in some cities.


    Closer Look
    The doors and much of the space on the side windows are covered in a variety of stickers - from witty commentary and science jokes, to silhouettes of women, stars and planets, and various memorabilia. The windows on the sides are entirely covered from the inside by paper and those on the back doors nearly so by stickers. These include gems like "My Other Ride Is A SPACESHIP" and "LOST YOUR SKITTY? Try Looking Under My Tires".

    It's a good thing he has a rear view camera on the dash.

    From the front through a cracked windshield one can see a dashboard covered in photographs, maps and paperwork with coffee stains, a broken pokeball, and fast food wrappers. A necklace hangs from an interface rear view mirror: a decorative piece with large and uneven beads of jet black rock, amber, some dark red stone that might have been glass, and stained hardwood. At the end hangs a hand-carved amulet of Ho-Oh, wings outstretched, of the same black rock. It's an old tribal looking piece, with copper set into the intricate linework.

    You can get in the back from side or back doors, but side is easier given the deep purple bicycle affixed to the back.


    Glance Inside
    The cab only has two seats for driver and single passenger and is functionally divided from the back. There is a narrow divide between the seats blocked with the bed, boxes, and a curtain generally tied to one side. The inside of the large conversion van is surprisingly spacious - a small compartment in the top has been converted into a smaller living space slash storage area. The van is cluttered, but a surprising amount of room for storage has been found through clever stacking.

    A cluttered work station consists of two small tables forming a sort of cubicle with a swiveling desk chair, a mini refrigerator with a microwave balanced on top between them, and a foldout bed with an oversize magikarp pillow on the other side of said 'cubicle' against the back wall. A television is mounted in the wall up in the back the cab, above the bed. There is a tool cabinet affixed to the frame in one corner.

    There are overhead storage bins and a line of shelving underneath them all around the perimeter. These shelves are filled with books and odd objects being used as bookends, including an old tribal looking hypno statue and three berry pots - one of which contains a meteor rock rather than a plant.

    In the corner opposite of the bed next to the tool cabinet is a half full laundry basket crammed in one corner next to a folded telescope. All kinds of gear related to his work in the field are stuffed into the corners among his personal belongings either leaning or in milk crates and cardboard boxes. There is barely a path to walk through.


    Inspect Interior
    The tables are covered in paperwork, magazines, books with excessive amounts of post-it flags and highlighting, scattered garbage (empty soda cans, crumpled cigarette packs, snack food wrappers), various junk (paperclips, pens, tape, a spare camera), a packed disc rack, an overflowing ashtray, and all manner of folder organizers filled with photographs separated by year.

    Underneath the bins, the walls are almost entirely covered in maps, charts, and posters put up with sticky tack (a keen observer might notice something drawn underneath the posters above the bed, scratched into the metal).

    There are posters of rock stars and legendary celebrities like Cynthia, a significant number of photos of ruin markings and ancient artifacts, maps of Kanto and Johto, a quite newer one of Hoenn. Above, a large spread of star maps affixed to the ceiling where one would find, from a vantage point on the bed (the major place to sit), a view of a large portion of the sky marked all over with tapped down post-it notes and white chalk marks.

    The large map of Johto taking up much of the wall above the makeshift desk space, similarly covered in notations in sharpie, dates and times next to places, sometimes merely simple symbols. A thin red string runs from push pin to push pin across the map.

    A dry erase board screwed into the side of the van is covered in what to most would look like numeric babble, similar to the notations on some of the loose sheets of paper.

    Seems to be an avid reader with books on physics, history, archeology, alien life, planes of existence, and string theory. There are also plenty of magazines and fiction titles ranging from gaming and women to mystery, horror, and sci-fi novels.

    The van smells of aftershave, cigarette smoke, and vaguely of something skunk like.
  • Technical Knowledge

    Is by no means an expert, but has extended knowledge of mathematics, physics, astronomy, computer science, chemistry, and engineering. Engineering is a mixed bag of automotive (is notably fond of vehicles and a surprisingly good driver), mechanics, computers, electronics, and geomatics. A jack-of-all-trades when it comes to fixing things and is more than a bit of a tinkerer. Absolutely a McGyver prone to unconventional thinking and questionable methodology to solve a problem, but with a decent track record in success for it despite taking a lot of risks or creating a lot of collateral damage in the process.

    A survivalist with a broad repertoire of practical skills. Is on par with any ranger and has wilderness as well as street smarts to spare. Is quite the skilled sneak thief - pickpocket, picklock, hacker, safecracker.

    Is moderately familiar with guitar, piano, and violin.

    Pokeball Maker:

    You can bring him your apricorns! They won't be pretty, but they'll get the job done. These unique renditions of pokeballs are distinctly urban and unwrought in comparison to a professional like Kurt. Nick specializes in highly efficient moon balls, industrial strength heavy balls, and vintage style antique balls.

    Nick can also “work with” standard pokeballs if you should ever require such a service.

    Nick owns a self-built pokeball scanning device. The rigged machine is a small suspension plate the pokeball hovers over, brightly lit in the center and with extensive wires feeding into its own monitor and then into whatever interface he might have hooked up to it. Nick can use it to read the statistics of pokemon inside, locate defects in the hardware - he also excels in their repair - and most importantly, to break into the coding to alter vital information.

    Nick can change all sorts of details registered with the ball and its associated creature, but what the ball reads will never match up with the unaffected information in national databases. Nick's major illegal services generally include tricking a pokeball into release - breaking the registration between pokemon and trainer, allowing them to be caught again and registered anew. An owner number could be modified at risk, but it is easier to just destroy all energy signals and use a new pokeball.


    Tattoo Artist:

    Nick isn't the best fine artist and prefers working in traditional black, but does well with bold abstract concentrating on symbolism - can work with you on copying tribal or celtic designs, lettering, and anything of similar geometric and flat design. If you want it done by machine you'll have to provide ink and needle, but he can do it traditionally by wooden stick as well if you have the patience and tolerance.

    Engineer:

    Nick can take a look at your vehicles and assorted gadgetry including making modifications to the pokedex and upgrading your gear.

    Dealer:

    Sells tiny mushrooms, big mushrooms, painkillers, and weed. Generally can also find you what you need.

    Thief:

    Generally only steals for his own needs and very selectively, but that depends on what sort of cash is being offered or how bad he needs a fix. Nick is quite the sneak thief when he wants to be!
