Jack's shift captain (Captain Harken) was a human man with dark brown hair and a strong jaw. Given his almost permanent position as a night shift captain, he looked a mess at any time as his lifestyle had taken a toll on his older body. Jaw was scattered with its usual 5 o'clock shadow and his eyes so darkly shadowed he might have looked like a reanimated corpse in the right lighting. The office at the barracks was filled with a haze of smoke, the window behind him open to let some of it out. He puffed on a pipe as he pushed through his paperwork wearily.
He'd read Jack's letter and had sent back that he'd like to discuss it with him before he leaves if possible, along with his office hours.
Rook — 02/24/2021
If the office hours had an opening for evening hours, Jack would show up then, dressed in his uniform just for the sake of getting that one last shift in. He had the note tucked away prior to arriving and paused infront of Harken's desk after entering the office, an immediate salute following. "Captain, good evening. You wanted to speak to me, I read." The vampire said, hands immediately resting at his sides.
Degu — 02/24/2021
The night captain only had evening hours. He didn't look up immediately when Jack walked in, but it became quickly apparent he'd only realized Jack was there when he spoke up. His tired eyes came up from the letter he was scanning for the 10th time and cleared his throat "Good evening, Private. Yes, take a seat." he said and looked back down to shuffle some papers into order, setting them aside.
"I understand that this is an urgent matter, your reasons are your own but it's frowned upon to leave with little warning. You will be making up the hours upon your return as you promised... I expect more warning in future." he said simply, he didn't sound particularly angry, he just had to lay down his rules to make sure his units didn't push their luck "But I called you here for more than that. I've had a request from another captain." he scanned the letter again "Captain Eberhardt is requesting you be transferred to his night unit in city center."
Rook — 02/24/2021
Jack's own posture seemed less straight-backed, and while he didn't have the same level of bags under his eyes as his Captain, it was close. He sat with an appreciative nod, leaning into the chair and he'd rest his gloved hands onto his lap. "I wouldn't do it if it wasn't important. An unexpected turn of events that should only take a couple days to deal with. I'll likely need to take my horse, if that's alright."
Then came the next bit of news, and Jack would tense his eyebrows. "Is there a reason for that? I didn't realize Captain Eberhardt had much interest in me."
Degu — 02/24/2021
"Of course, as long as you bring it back in one piece" Was his gruff response to Jack's request to take his horse.
When the fellow asked him why Captain Eberhardt had requested his transfer "I was hoping you could tell me that, private. It's no great secret that Captain Eberhardt isn't particularly fond of vampires." he said it matter-of-factly, this captain didn't dress anything up but he wasn't ever really malicious. "Either you've made an impression on him, or you've pissed him off."
Rook — 02/24/2021
"I'm very fond of the horse." Jack pointed out, keen on that being his promise the horse would be fine. When he spoke further on Harpur, the vampire scratched at the back of his neck. "I have only spoken to the man once, perhaps I should seek him out directly if I'm going to his unit when I get back."
Maybe he'd use it to his advantage.
"I'd like to think impressions and aggravations are the same regarding my kind." Not with just Eberhardt, really. "Is he working tonight?"
Degu — 02/24/2021
Apparently the sleepy captain hadn't considered the fact that Harpur was working tonight. He blinked slowly and then seemed to come to life "Oh-! yes, yes across the way. He's on paperwork too." he motioned towards the hallway where Harpur's office was. "If you could sort it out with him and get back to me, I need to process the transfer while you're away if it goes ahead. I have not agreed to it yet." he took a few puffs on his pipe and set the letter regarding Jack aside.
"Head over there now if you'd like."

Captain Eberhardt was in much the same position as Harken had been, tired eyes blearily reviewing evidence from the last week. He knew his partner was somewhere nearby and the irritation of that was making it hard to think...but at least when he wasn't out on the beat Bazil didn't need to breath down his goddamned neck. There were clues... there was a pattern to a set of recent thefts and he was trying to piece them together by moving the papers on his desk around. "What are you up to, Pascaal?" he sighed and ran a hand through his hair.
Even Harpur reached for a pipe in his desk and started stuffing it with tobacco. It seemed the night captains just smoked a lot to get through the shift.
Rook — 02/24/2021
"Thank you, Captain. I will get the information over to you soon."
Jack left the room immediately after and his tired expression remained, though he would knock before bothering to enter the other man's office. "Captain Eberhardt, if you've got time?" He'd heard a mention of someone's name, but dismissed it for now. If allowed in, the vampire figured he'd probably be better off just standing infront of the desk. "Good evening."
Degu — 02/24/2021
Captain Eberhardt looked up from his work and for a brief moment he looked surprised. "Private." he greeted "I had thought you'd already left" apparently his intention had been to push through the transfer while Jack wasn't here, oops.
"Please, come in." he motioned to the front of the desk, trying to seem approachable. The weariness helped, he didn't have much energy on his first night shift of the week, not enough oomph to be an asshole. He set the pipe back down and moved the evidence notes away to the side "What is it you need?" he asked, feigning ignorance.
Rook — 02/24/2021
"I was about to, but my Captain called me in to speak about the abrupt take of leave." He replied, as he sat down and unlike in the other office, he sat up straight with his hands clasping the arms of the chair at his sides. "I didn't want that to wait."
Harpur seemed more cordial, which only concerned Jack. "You want me in your unit and I guess my curiosity's gotten the best of me, since you prefer other humans with yours. Did I do something to grab your interest in particular?"
Degu — 02/24/2021
Captain Eberhardt took a deep breath and sat up a little straighter. He offered Jack a smile of all things! "I thought it might give us an opportunity to get to know one another." he said with an ominous calm "As you're spending so much time with the Grimani and Aiolfi family, it seemed appropriate. Nothing permanent...you need not stay with my unit if you find yourself missing your old one. Though city center is more exciting by far." the smile on his lips didn't quite reach his eyes.
Rook — 02/24/2021
"Does it? I don't feel comfortable with someone who surrounds themselves with people who don't want me around, with all due respect, Captain Eberhardt. I am here to defend the city, not worry about my own life from my fellow guards." Jack pointed out, moving his hands to his lap and he'd finally sit back. "As a Guard, like any other in any unit, I should be more concerned about lawbreakers than the hatred of a new Captain."
Degu — 02/24/2021
Harpur's lips fell into a dark frown, the gleam in his eyes was a dark one. The silence played out for a moment and the atmosphere could be cut by a knife "It seems you're looking to lose your job over some rather extreme assumptions, Private." he said with a cold steadiness. "You do not speak to your superiors like that, Private. I don't know what sort of society you came from but we have some rules within our ranks here. Don't make me send you marching back across that hallway to tell your Captain what you just said." he gripped at his pen rather tightly and narrowed his eyes.
"Your life would not be in danger from your comrades. If you think the city center units are purely mundane you're sorely mistaken" there was an unspoken: Unfortunately.
Rook — 02/24/2021
"Because I'm concerned about racism and my personal safety, I'm pushing over the line?" Jack asked, and then Harpur brought up the words 'society' and 'rules' which the vampire immediately made a gesture towards him for. It was regretted after, but he was tired (more physically at this point).
"Perhaps it's best I don't join your unit. We clearly aren't a good match, and obviously, I would just make things worse. You've so much to deal with already." The vampire said, as if sympathetic and he'd stand up.
Degu — 02/24/2021
Captain Eberhardt picked his pipe back up and sought out his box of matches. He wouldn't look at Jack, something a captain did when they no longer wanted to give a private the time of day (or night, rather) "Get out of my office, private. Expect a disciplinary with Captain Harken upon your return." he grumbled gruffly, shifting some blank parchment closer to begin filing a report.
Rook — 02/24/2021
"That is fine." Jack left out the mention of preferring that to Harpur's unit, but it was clear he seemed happier now and he even smiled towards the disgruntled human before heading over to the other office to speak to Harken. "It did not go well, but it was doomed from the start. I request not to be transferred and I request I take a little longer. I've someone to hold a promise to, maybe this week will be good for that."
Jack said, a little louder than necessary. "But if I must go to that unit.."
Degu — 02/24/2021
Harken jumped a little, spilling a little of his coffee on his shirt. He'd been in his own world and hadn't expected Jack back so quickly. The gruff older man hissed and dabbed at his tunic with a handkerchief before clearing his throat and looking up at Jack. "I will decline the request then if that is your wish. I'd rather keep you on my unit anyway." Harken wasn't a smiley man, or even a happy man, but it was always easy to tell when he appreciated you.
"Take your leave. We will discuss the hours you need to make up when you return. Safe travels, Private."
Rook — 02/24/2021
"Apologies and thank you." Jack wouldn't remain in there longer, and once he stepped out, he'd glance over to Harpur's office. If the man was looking up, he'd give him a look that was meant to be equal parts mocking and amused. Of course, the expression was gone in an instant and he'd head out of the building to wander to a very 'welcoming' house.
Degu — 02/24/2021
Harpur narrowed his eyes up at Jack ... it was easy to tell the captain didn't trust him. No doubt it was obvious why he'd really wanted him transferred and unsurprisingly the brutish captain didn't take too nicely to his plans being foiled. He grit his teeth as Jack disappeared, the pen snapping in half in his fingers.
