Based on my experiementing with the little needles, I think if you're a tight knitter you'd snap them. I almost did and I am generally loose.
I'm also a fairly tight knitter, and I've never snapped a bamboo needle. I think the smallest ones I've got are 3mm DPNs; they do bend pretty well.
