"High-and-mighty duke you say," she repeats, managing to suppress a grin. "That is too bad -- your music is lovely. A shame they would rather it be heard from afar, but hearing it is nice nevertheless."

Vix slightly turns her head to give him her attention, that same stoicism remaining accustomed to her expression.

"Indeed I am. What is the cause of this lack of morale?"
"I must decline. Such a drink would hinder my enlightenment. I suggest you reflect on yourself and question whether or not such an indulgement is right for your spirit. S'allumer welcomes all people."

"I do not think we shall face any danger on the road. Not under his grace. Brother Mauricio, I'm sure you're heard the man who perished yesterday worshiped Lutara. S'allumer would not let any harm come to her true children."
"Thanks missy. Tis always good to hear. Tell all ya friends with a bit of extra cash 'bout me music."

The woman laughed. "Bandits. Or so they say," she was clearly hiding something but kept her gossiping under control. "Big fight yesterday and one of the Soldiers was killed. A bull. Nice guy after hours when he started to get a little tipsy." She sighed, "I hope we can arrive safely without any more bloodshed. They may be ... abrupt... but at their heart all our companions are good people."
Mauricio looked around, he’d seen the cat walk off and couldn’t immediately spot her, at least the skunk seemed to stay close to him. He let the boy preach, he was doing very well spreading the word of s’Allumer. “I have heard such rumour yes. Her blessings do not extend to heretics, even those our church might occasionally seek to tolerate.” Explained the inquisitor. “However, think yourself not immortal, milord. S’Allumer has many reasons to call you by His side, He is unfathomable and eventually we will all be called to Him, or cast down if we led a sinful life.”
"That may be so, but I believe s’Allumer still has use for me on this plain." The fox's tone changed as he addressed the boar and skunk. "I have heard that my family will be holding festivities upon my return. Any friend of my brother is a friend of mine, and you are both welcome to join if you wish. My family is known for their entertainment. I am sure you will thoroughly enjoy yourself."
A simple nod, accompanied by a reassuring smile. If she knew anyone with cash, however, she would have swindled them out of it some time ago. Not to mention she wouldn't be allowing herself to be picked up under the sway of gold...

"I see," she hummed, giving the ground a contemplative glance. Or so they say. "I would hope our presence would give the inhabitants reason to relax. I will take your word for it, on the hearts of the people here being whole, though I do have to wonder.

Do you think it was bandits, or have you some other theory?"
Mauricio quickly cut in. “It pains me to inform you Milord tgat these are not my friends. It is not for wise for one of my order to form friendships, these are merely…” He sought a word. “Warriors, that will protect us on our travels.” He spoke kindly and politely to the child, very much as if he were addressing a brother.
"I know nothing of the sort about combat," the woman began. "But I've heard others say that they were too far prepared to be bandits. But what do I know? They were a mishmash group o' thugs with swords," she shrugged with a single hand.

"Anyway - I'm Keila and my man here is Akiva. It'll be a pleasure to finally be travelling with another down-to-earth kind."
"Ah yes they say the same about my Rank. But since my eyes have opened, I have sworn to be fair and equal to men of all walks of life. I'm sure we will become close comrades during our few days together, and you shall feast with me as if we have known each other since childhood."
"Mhm.", says the boar who, despite not really being sure of what to add to this exchange - who the hell is even this milord? Does he even want to be in one of his family's parties? - still wants to make sure they don't forget he's here and listening to any possible less kind words Mauricio may want to say about him.
So others had a clear view... Maybe it would be wise to continue questioning.

"I see," the cat nodded, folding her hands behind her back as she swayed on her feet.

Of course, introductions. She would give yet another simple nod. "My name is Vix - I hope to travel long with the two of you," she purred, that smile finally widening. "And I will do well to protect you.

And whoever else had witnessed said crime. No one you've affiliations with, I hope? I would not wish for any of you to be turned upon, in case what actually occurred happened to be intentional on the part of someone dwelling here."
Jade just stays off to the side, watching the exchange quietly.

Wat?

"I dunno anythin' about a witness." She scratched her ear uneasily. She didn't often have to think back to things like this. "Most of the non-fighting folk were hiding away in the caravans during the brawl. I just saw what I did through a slit in the coverings."
With a final yell and round of orders, people start hurrying into caravans, and filing onto the road. Guards flanked the front and back of the caravan. The strange fox in the bedsheet saw Meira, approach and quickly hurried away. She glared at him from the corner of her eye. With her, she carried simple padded cloth armour. If Jade puts it on, it would be found to be several sizes too large and would fall down with even the simplest movement. “Where’d the other one go?” she asked, referring to the cat. “I got you some armour. I can’t have you fighting in that. You’d be more trouble than you’re worth.” And with that she thrust the armour at Jade. “That is Rinaldi property, I want it returned.”

To the stoat she said “I want you and the mercenaries to travel alongside the caravan. We depart shortly.”
It's something...

A sigh escapes the cat as a hand presses against her chest in relief.

"Well... as long as you and the others came out unscathed, it matters not who else saw. He did his duty -- protected the innocent."

Pffhhbbt... not well.

"I will have to keep watch for any further suspicious happenings -- no bother, though. Do come upon me if you ever need some sort of assistance, whether it be defense or simple conversation."

And preferably not money.
When Meira approached Mauricio turned to her. “She slipped off while I was distracted with the lord. Would you like me to find her?” When Meira added the last the edge of the inquisitor’s mouth couldn’t help but twitch. “You speak as if the mercenaries have been assigned to me… I must watch over the lord, and guide him in the ways of s’Allumer, until we arrive.” He looked at her crew. “Is one of yours not better suited as their battle master?”
"It is the guards duty to protect him. We have all been sworn to the Rinaldi family. Therefore, he will travelling with his wife and child and most trusted men. And s’Allumer wills it, actually in his caravan for a change. You may continue your investigation once we are safe within the estate once again."
“Very well then, I shall do as you ask.” Mauricio said reluctantly, stifling a sneer. “Keeping watch over the ‘help’ you hired would be wise in any case. If you hinder my investigation however I shall not hesitate to include it in my final report.” With that, and a slight bow the ermine turned away and started looking around for that darn cat.
She would see her companions off with another courteous smile, a wave, and a bow of the head before turning on her heel to return to where they had arrived.

Of course, with the murder in mind, she wanted nothing more than to figure what had really occurred.
When Mauricio spotted Vix he advanced on her, his face neutral as he put his hands together. "So there you are." He said in a droning voice. "I haven't seen you since we arrived at the camp, might I inquire where you went?" He asked searchingly.
