Byron looked surprised. He had not noticed the bird if it had flown over or existed. The dwarf didn't care for such things. "The offer always stands. We could always use with more wardens."
Up close, one could see that Byron was making the elven mercenary scrub the blood out of the floor, with a toothbrush and soap. The poor fellow was doing his best.

Runt nodded,"Then you shall have my strength at your side. I will not fail you Master.." he stated firmly before kneeling down to the elf and patting his shoulder.
"Remember this lesson well young mercenary. With this you will build strength, as well as discipline. Washing blood away is rather enlightening if you do it correctly."
His words were..odd..But it was what his teacher had taught him as a child. In fact, many children were taught the values and benefits of punishment.

Janella did not pay much attention to the elven mercenary, aside to enjoying the sight of his tedious work, which was probably just as well for him. She had noted the owl, and was certainly not going to intervene with or discourage the Avaar's calling.
"When is the Joining?" she asked Byron.
"When is the Joining?" she asked Byron.
Byron looked at the two of them.
"Soon enough," he said staring up at the two of them as if contemplating something. There was a long bit of silence before he huffed.
"Come with me," he instructed as he turned around to lead them through one of the Keep's doors to his own office. Everything was dwarf height, save for two chairs. It was fairly sparse, save for papers, a good lot of crates containing bottles and a sleeping nug. The creature looked up when they entered, heading over to nuzzle Byron's hand. The dwarf gave the creature a gentle pat on the head.
"Usually we send the recruits to get a vial of darkspawn blood. Head down to the Deep Roads to see if they're serious about fighting the darkspawn," he said as he looked over at the two of them. "Then again, most recruits don't try to turn a spar into a death match." The latter was said in a scolding tone as he withdrew two vials of blood from his desk, handing it out to the two of them.

Runt picked up a vial and looked at it curiously, shaking it's contents lightly, when he heard Byron explain how the test was originally done. He looked at the man.
"Wouldn't this be considered cheating Master Byron?" He asked curiously,"Was our match really enough?"

Janella was hesitant, giving the contents of the vial a tentative swirl. She had followed Byron here without a second thought, curious about just what joining entailed. The elf felt no remorse whatsoever about the spar getting a bit out of hand, and would have said something like, 'He started it!" if the situation had not been so serious. Her nose wrinkled upon hearing that this was darkspawn blood. "Is this even edible? Is it toxic?" The elf was giving this serious thought. However, she didn't have much of an option here. She'd been driven here by harsh circumstances, between her race and her former profession she didn't judge herself as having much of a chance outside of becoming a Warden.
Glancing at Runt, she had been about to uncork her vial whenever the Avaar sought to confirm with Byron that they had truly passed their test.

Byron raised an eyebrow curiously at Janella's questions.
"Edible lass? Whatever gave you the idea that you'd eat the blood? It's part of the steps for the Joining of course. It's something the recruits have to present, as a symbolic gesture," the dwarf said, his brows furrowing as he studied the both of them. A lie of course, but only Wardens knew that. How did that information slip out?
"Technically it is cheating. But technically, I've never had to stop someone from using a chain on another, nor stop someone from nearly taking another's eye out in a spar. At least not between two new recruits. Wardens with a vendetta against another certainly. If you'd like to do it the normal way, by all means, head down to the Deep Roads, I'm quite certain that you'll need less than an hour to get it done from the way you two fight. Darkspawn will not stand a chance against either of you. That much I can tell from your fighting prowess."
He paused and took a drink from his flask.
"Unless of course, you're telling me that I'm misplacing my trust in the both of you in thinking you're not willing to join the Order. Once a Grey Warden, always a Grey Warden."

Runt shook his head,"The Lady in the Sky has lead me to you for a purpose. I will not question her, nor you." he stated, pocketing his vial, careful so that it wouldn't break.
"I will do as you see fit Master Byron, if you believe I have proven myself to you already then I will gladly proceed to the next step. " he then looked at Janella,"Though, if she believes we should proceed as Wardens past, then I request to join her.."
His words were very plain, it seemed to be his character, yet it showed he would be satisfied doing whatever the other wished.

Janella also pocketed her vial. Whenever Byron handed over the vials of blood and spoke of going to kill a Darkspawn, she had accidentally put two and two together. The elf was not very wise, but she was clever. Too clever for her own good at times. She was in no hurry to drink it, and wasn't even sure if it was fit for consumption.
"I'm fine with proceeding as is. If Quartermaster Byron thinks our may-have-spiraled-out-of-control-spar is enough . . . " she shrugged as if to ask who she was to challenge it. "I've also got no choice but to proceed. My former tasks and lifestyle have not led me with any choice. Whatever Joining entails, I'll comply."

Byron raised an eyebrow at the both of them.
"Good, then I shall inform the Commander that the both of you are ready. If anyone asks, I took you two down to the Deep Roads and you fought a Genlock. You'll be notified when the ceremony is to take place," he said as he strode over to a corner of the room, picking up a bucket and two mops before coming back, passing each of them a mop. The bucket was placed at their feet and inside was a bar of used soap.
"Dining hall needs cleaning for the ceremony, and I have two recruits who need a reminder that a spar is to remain a spar."
