Reply to this thread if you have a proposal for a new species that others can use.

Before species creation, please note our rules:

If you're RPing and you are making random NPC characters in your post be various different species you make up on the spot, that's highly encouraged, so don't worry about posting here for anything like that. Animals have all kinds of mutations due to the sludge, so it's no problem to make them up as you go to add flair to the RP (as long as you're still following our general setting rules). Same goes for your personal characters.

If you'd rather keep your characters species unique to only you and those who you allow, just make sure that there isn't a large population of them mentioned anywhere else in the world.

To make sure things are fair for everyone and it doesn't get too complicated or overwhelming for new RPers in our community there are a couple of rules about any new populous local species proposal:
  1. If you post here, anyone in the community can and should be able to use it or make a character that species without your approval or permission.
  2. For players' ease in RPing (we don't want to get too complicated and nuanced in our lore and thereby make it unfun to RP for newcomers), any proposed species cannot be commonly known by most people or extremely populated throughout the world. Sure, they will have some kind of population as a species, just not with the same popularity and population comparison of say, wolves vs spiny lumpsuckers.
  3. Any proposed species shouldn't be causing so many social issues that it interferes with major plots. In other words, you will be violating rule #2 if players have to keep track of this species just to RP.
  4. Keep it broad and vague, please! Too many details makes it liable for people to think they need approval from the author to use it, and that's not the kind of atmosphere we want to promote here. Use "commonly" or "usually" when describing characteristics instead of absolutes.

In other words, you're designing a loose template of a species, and the people who RP them will add in more detail themselves. As long as the overall attributes listed here stay the same, any inconsistencies between species can be explained by them originating in different areas.

It's a fine line to be sure we are both honoring every contribution while also making it accessible for everyone to play them.

I got asked to provide this here since someone was interested in playing a creature I made up on the fly.

Species Name: Cephaloquad

Appearance: In their natural, unaltered state they look like the following image.

Illustration3_6.png

Otherwise they are fairly accurate shifters for any being with 4 limbs and one to two tails (no more no less.)

Preferred ecosystem: Cephaloquads require high-humidity environments and daily access to clean water for consumption and soaking. Unlike their ancient ancestors they vastly prefer fresh water- salt water can cause a rash.

Abilities/Limitations/Disadvantages: Cephaloquads' claim to fame is being natural, non-magical shapeshifters. This is basically their one trick. They can change color, shape and texture like a modern day cuttlefish to an even greater extent thanks to their higher intelligence. Their beak and eyes are unshiftable, and any hair isn't true fibers so tends to run a bit thick, these being the main giveaways that it is a cephaloquad one has met and not some other creature. Otherwise they are reasonable mimics of any 4 limbed creature- no more or less on the limbs, one to two tails, and with 2 ears or some similar head structure. They cannot grow wings, sprout extra limbs, etc. They also cannot change their voices as a natural ability. They can squeeze through any hole large enough to fit their brain and beak through and have a powerful grip, being ambush constrictors once upon a time. The largest disadvantage is being tied down to locations with water.

Other Notes: Cephaloquads are intelligent and feeling beings, not monsters, though they have a scary appearance. They are in fact a shy bunch who are self-concious of how vertebrates tend to percieve their true form. In this world sometimes the very plainest wolf might just be a cephaloquad who is desperate to fit in.
