Origins

Pet Rocks were introduced on April 1st 2023 as an April Fools' joke. Kim had wanted to build a "tamagotchi-esque" pet care game for people to interact with their walruses and phoenixes. When she mentioned this idea as a potential April Fools joke, Ilmarinen immediately volunteered to design the artwork for pet rocks, so that folks who had not/could not purchase pet items could also enjoy the upcoming new walragotchi. Ilmarinen was originally going to do 3 pet rocks, but got carried away and ended up designing 5 basic pet rocks and 5 premium pet rocks.

On April 1st 2023, a news post announced that the RPR was going to abandon being a RP site and become a pet site instead, and would be changing its name to "The RolePet Reposittery." The Walragotchi pet care simulator was announced in this post, along with the fact that all RPR users can claim two free pet rocks. Users have an equal chance to receive any of the 5 basic pet rock variations when visiting the claim link. The link to claim pet rocks still works, even for users who joined the site after April 1 2023.

For users who want more than two pet rocks, "Box of Rocks" items were sold in the store. Each box contained 5 random rocks.

Drop rates

The 5 basic rock types (Flat Pet Rock, Lumpy Pet Rock, Mossy Pet Rock, Pet Amethyst Geode and Pet Tiger's Eye) have identical drop chances, both in the free pull and in boxes of rocks. No basic pet rock is more rare or common than any other.

When pulling from a box of rocks, there is a 20% (or 1 in 5) chance that whatever rock type you pull will be transformed into its special variant variety. No variant pet rock is more rare or common than any other variant.

Usage

Pet Rocks can be cared for in the walragotchi pet care simulator in exactly the same way as walruses and flavor text. Their hunger, entertainment and hygiene bars go up and down, though the flavor text never actually refers to the pet rocks taking any action on their own and they do appear to be more or less inanimate.

Clicking a pet rock will shake it, and when it stops, the googly eyes will be in a new position.

Benefits During Epic Week

Pet rocks are non-combatants and have no effect on Epic Week combat, unlike walruses and phoenixes. When asked about this, Kim has said that throwing pet rocks at enemies would be pet rock abuse.
