The doctor was slowly settling into Thornmouth as an Odd Permanent Fixture. It was an arduous process, but they couldn’t be held at fault—Jaxamir and they had never stayed long in any previous towns, either leaving of their own accord or politely getting themselves kicked out. Staying long enough to require proper lodgings was a feat in itself.

Harpur had met one part of the duo, and now there was Jaxamir’s Better Half (debatable, perhaps an outright lie).

The physician had very specific haunts. The library, the infirmary, the hookah dens. The later may attract degenerates (and stereotypes), but the doctor had found at certain hours of the day it was a reasonably quiet place to hide away with their books. So they’d found themself in a plush, pillowed booth in a corner, a hookah set up of something sweet, but avoiding anything stimulating. They had their books for that, of which they’d set up a tiny wall to hide behind.

Draped dhoti pants, a men’s kurta, vest, and sash, but their greying hair left long to wave about their shoulders. The doctor reclined leisurely in their corner, the mouthpiece of the hookah serving more as a fidget piece for their idle fingers while they scratched notes down from the book propped up in their lap.

Harpur switched it up now and then. He'd never admit it to anyone but the draw of public areas wasn't just for leisure to him, he was waiting. He was predatory.... all he needed was one slip up from a drunk werewolf, a high vampire, an inebriated dragon. The Hookah Bar was one of his rarer haunts, but a haunt nonetheless. It was comfortable, though he felt a little out of place in a room full of beautiful strangers wearing silks. People did dress the part, and he was no different, wearing a simple black kurta with red buttons that stretched hopelessly across his muscles and baggy red trousers leading down to black sandals. His appearance made the room uncomfortable, tensions among the staff rose rather immediately.

Iron coloured eyes flitted towards his favourite spot only to see... hm, someone unfamiliar sat in his spot. He didn't care that he wasn't a regular here, he always expected his spot. Harpur was a man who liked watching from hidden corners. He approached with a scowl that communicated quite clearly that he wanted their spot before dropping into a spot nearby instead, sinking lazily into the cushions in front of another Hookah.

While he waited to be served he looked back over his shoulder at them and their pile of books with a curl of his lips "Did you get lost on y' way to the library?" he chuckled lowly.

Like an unstable whiff of shadow in place of smoke...? Unfortunately the Vaidya was about as human as they came, likely not someone of interest to Harpur. Their gaze drifted upwards when the server nearest them tensed, but they made their analyzing sweep of the room discreetly, before returning to their book. They’d chosen the perfect, hidden corner for both people-watching and avoiding confrontation and notice. This was definitely their spot—sorry, Harpur—and wouldn’t be released back to its (original) owner without a fight.

They didn’t look up at the grouchy human eyeing them, and the fort of pillows and elevated, crossed legs in similarly baggy pants appeared the absolute Epitome of Lavish Comfort. They took a short hit from the hookah before idly twirling the mouthpiece between their long fingers, eventually looking up as the man sat one booth over called attention to them. Smoke curled out from between the sleepy physician’s lips before they spoke.

“Perhaps lost on my way out.” They’d built a fort out of them already, after all. “I find this a quiet, enjoyable place to read.”

Harpur didn't like to be grumpy at other humans but he really was sore about them having his favourite seat, like a lion with a thorn in its foot or a dog on a diet. He was served, ordering something with a bit of a kick to it seeing as he wasn't drinking for now and waited patiently as the staff set it up for him while he watched with narrowed gaze. His eyes lingered on Cecille, having ignored their first answer seemingly by not responding. He grumbled at their mannerisms, as if he were angry they even had the audacity to look so casual and comfortable in his seat.

"I haven't seen you in here before. I remember faces well." he claimed as he finally lifted the mouthpiece of his own hookah to his lips, taking a long drag and leaning back to let a plume of smoke out from between his lips, his mind momentarily lingering on his battles with dragons in days long past.

And the unknown east-Asian looked extremely comfortable too, to add another layer of salt. After his failure to answer, they assumed the exchange was over, and their attention drifted back behind their book, little tendrils of smoke trailing up from where they hid. It dropped down an inch again to squint at him when he spoke next.

"I have only been in here once before." They could have just as easily lied, but that might have stirred the pot. The squint was brief, subtle, and assessing, but that distant, sleepy look quickly returned. This one acted a bit like Jaxamir. Which meant he was either trying to pick them up, or they had done something to offend him. "This lounge is your regular 'haunt'? I trust I am not intruding." Oh no, a new regular to add to the stupefied masses.

Degu — 11/06/2020
"Once a week." he admitted "Usually, maybe less if I am busy..." he cast a sideways look at them, only proving to be more like Jaxamir in his own way as he jabbed the mouthpiece of his hookah towards them "And that is my seat, once a week. So you are intruding upon my space, yes." he was a big guy, they were not. He expected them to yield the seat to him at this, perhaps, especially with how he sat still and watched them as if he were waiting for the result he wanted.

“Oh?” The little doctor seemed to ponder this, settling their book down in their lap so it wasn’t half-hovering in front of their face. They looked up and out, past Harpur and towards the rest of the patrons of the den, catching the eye of one of the servers rather quickly. The lady wandered over, a tray in hand which she clutched to her lap as she bent down to speak with them with her back to Harpur’s seat.

“I apologize for bothering you. But was it possible that there was a mistake in my seating-placement?”

The server, quite befuddled, but afraid she was about to encounter a Customer With A Problem, stuttered polite confusion at the even-voiced Indian. “No... I don’t—I don’t believe so. Is this corner not to your liking—ah—”

“Doctor.”

“Doctor...? We could perhaps move you somewhere else.”

“No, I am quite comfortable here,” the barest extra emphasis placed, “I merely feared there may have been a mix up, or a reservation placed here prior.”

“No, doctor. Is there, perhaps a reason...?”

“No, no.” They brought the hookah to their lips for a thoughtful puff. “The service has been most accommodating. Could I perhaps ask for a refill of tea? I seem to have finished mine.” The server ducked with gratitude, clearing away their empty teapot and hurrying off, still obviously confused but happy to oblige.

“It seems you were mistaken,” to Harpur, their voice betraying no hint of ire, sarcasm or even mirth. They blinked at him coolly, and looked back down at their book.

Harpur squinted at the woman as she came over to speak to this ...doctor?! he scowled rather immediately at that and the passive aggressive conversation. He shouldn't have let it rile him up but he found himself clenching his fists and calling upon every ounce of professionalism he had to not pick Vaidya up and dump them out of the damned corner. He was used to 'big scary captain' getting him at least his favourite seats by now.

Well he could be passive aggressive too. Maybe they wouldn't move Vaidya, but they SURE as hell wouldn't try to move him. He stood up abruptly "You're no doctor i've ever seen" he said idly as he crossed to Vaidya's sat and sat... directly beside them, giving no personal space and even knocking over some of the books as he reached out and took one of the other mouth pieces to partake in THEIR hookah without even looking at them. Hah! One point to Harpur...right? the staff were certainly starting to look uncomfortable when they noticed.

AJ — 11/07/2020
The Vaidya just had that kind of effect sometimes. Were this a tavern setting, they would have expected that to trigger a drunken bar fight. In this sleepy den, they somehow expected to get away with this. Harpur wouldn’t be backed by half a dozen other drunken patrons, so he likely wouldn’t start anything, right? Unfortunately they hadn’t anticipated the amount of Petty the large man might sink to. Their book lowered again so the doctor could eye him as he approached.

“Oh? Have you made the acquaintance of every medical professional—” cutting off with a displeased sound as the brutish man plopped down beside them, he immediately created a Gravity Well of pillows, causing them to flop uncomfortably into his shoulder as they scrambled to grab up the books he had knocked over. They sucked in a sharp breath through their nose, holding their ire between pursed lips and letting none of it escape in the form of harsh words. Once they’d secured their literature, they pushed it out of reach and fixed him with a withering look, voice perfectly composed. “If this is a misguided attempt to ‘pick up’ a patron, I am not having it.”

The hookah had a pleasant, resinous aroma, like pine and cedar.

Harpur was very stubborn "I've met a fair few." he said almost proudly, perhaps the slight limp in the way he'd walked over had given away how often this bastard got himself hurt. He chuckled as they flopped against him, smirking ever the more arrogantly as he heard that frustrated suck of breath. He turned his head to blow a plume of smoke just past their face but not quite rude enough to blow it straight into their face "Pick up?" he chuckled and looked them up and down "The thought hadn't crossed my mind, but I see you're falling for me regardless." Just to be an extra level of bastard he hopped up and down once more to make them sink more aggressively into him a second time with a bark of laughter. By this point the staff were awkwardly stepping towards them and then backing off, stuck in a hopeless loop of not wanting a customer to suffer but also not wanting to end up in a cell because they pissed off a captain.

"What's y' name then, doctor? I might as well know if y' so keen on me." he could hardly keep the laughter out of his voice, asshole.

AJ — 11/08/2020
“You must not have much in the ways of brains and grace on your side.” Apparently, they equated his injuries with low intelligence. Well if he didn’t know the proper time and place to pick a fight... They pushed against his shoulder to give themself some proper space, only for him to bounce the cushions a second time. The doctor was gritting their teeth to hold back a snarl as the useless staff just stood there and watched.

Finally they just stood up in the well of pillows to get away from him, not exactly tall but with an air of discomforting chill. “Just ‘doctor’ is fine. And I think I have some modicum of standards.” Ew.

Degu — 11/15/2020
Harpur's eyes bounced high on his forehead, as if not expecting such a ballsy retort from a much ...less muscular 'man'. He snorted as if thoroughly amused by that, sturdy as a tree as they pushed away from him. "Ah you're too good for me then? Think you're so smart, but who do you come runnin' to when a werewolf tears through the town? you all come runnin' to me." he chuckled and took a cocky hit from the hookah flute, being sure to blow it at them this time.

He seemed to be easing up now he was back in his seat. He was a man of habit to an absolute fault. The way he looked around maybe could've been translated as a moment of clarity that may have made him seem a little unhinged. He cleared his throat and lowered the flute, wafting the smoke away that he'd just blown at them. "I'm being a fuckin' pig aren't I?" he asked perhaps surprisingly. The doctor was a human, he was supposed to be a protector. "Listen. I'll pay for all this" he motioned to the hookah.

AJ — 11/15/2020
The physician scoffed. “You expect me to come to you to deal with a lycanthrope? Wait until it transforms and rampages, and hack at it and hope for the best, will you?” Where was the finesse! Carefully using its weaknesses to root it out prior to a full moon, and if things got violent—they could handle themself, although perhaps the little doctor was cocky, but otherwise they had Jaxamir for that. The way the doctor’s face twisted with unconcealed contempt, disgust, they considered lashing out and connecting their foot with his face. They were in the optimal position for it. Apparently he was some bountyhunter or town guard of renown. Respected? The way the staff stood uncomfortably made them think ‘feared’, more like.

“Oh? Are you?” That unemotional monotone managed to seethe. Realizing they’d lost their cool, more untamed than unhinged themself, they brushed their hair from their face; they managed to restrain their nervous fingers from fiddling it up into a bun, leaving it long across their shoulders and holding their fists to their side again. “I see. Why?”

Degu — 11/15/2020
Harpur didn't react to the seethe, he'd come to the realization he was being a bit of an asshole. Of course if Vaidya was some weird creature and not a human then he wouldn't care. "Consider it an....apology." he cleared his throat "It's just a seat." he sounded more like he was talking himself down than talking to them. He was a protector, he needed to protect... and here he was bothering a citizen. Terrible. He even made a move to get up and go back to his other seat, though in the process he fished some shards from his shard-pouch and handed more than enough to pay for everything to them, holding them out in his palm. Heck, there was even enough for a meal added on top, not overly generous but generous enough to be a genuine apology.

"Here."

Another thought crossed his mind. He wouldn't ever want a doctor to let him die. Perhaps that was part of it.

AJ — 11/15/2020
The doctor wasn’t so easily swayed by the apology. He’d invaded their space, and they couldn’t just...! Let that go. They opened their mouth to shoot back some response at ‘just a seat’, but paused and closed it again to watch him thoughtfully. They hadn’t really done more than spit back insults at him, so they had no insight into what had caused him to reconsider. But then he stood, and quizzically, they held out a hand to what he was offering. Hm. ...They supposed they could pass it on to pay for their’s and Jaxamir’s dinner. “Do you simply pay your way out of damages?” They had no idea what to make of this.

Degu — 11/15/2020
Harpur's good will could only go so far. He closed his hand around the shards "Well, if you don't want them." he said, seemingly drawing them back towards his coin pouch instead of passing them off, starting to get pissed all over again. "Whatever, enjoy your damned hookah." and with that, unless they stopped him to try and get those shards off him he'd head back over to his seat that was still basically next to theirs anyway and awkwardly try to ignore them like the sour bastard he was.

AJ — 11/15/2020
“If your money is contingent on me accepting your apology outright, then no.” They wouldn’t take him trying to wave those shards in front of them. They realized full well that they’d ‘ruined’ whatever reconciliation had been attempted, but they damn well weren’t going to admit it. When he left back to his own side, they stood debating on whether or not they’d stay, unmolested, but their mood for books had soured. Spite, then, might keep them there. They sank back down crosslegged and reorganized their stack of books, letting him pointedly ignore them and ignoring him politely in return.

Degu — 11/15/2020
Harpur grunted irritably at their response, silently and angrily puffing on his own hookah now. He couldn't shake the irritability so he didn't stay long, leaving long before his hookah was depleted without another look at Vaidya. He tipped his servers before heading out the door and slamming it a little too hard behind him.
