Degu — 02/22/2021
It was late and no one knew where he was. It was stupid, he knew his dad would be disappointed but after retiring for the night he'd slipped out the window and snuck off into the city through the cover of the trees with his guitar slung over his shoulder. He'd dressed simply and his tail hair had been trimmed short. It won't get in the way now. He thought to himself.

Once he was in the city he smiled at passing guards, winking cheekily at one or two who caught his eye. Needless to say they were either uncomfortable or irritated but it worked to turn their heads away from him and even avoid him if they passed again. The market wasn't shut at this time on a weekend, no...the wares simply became more adult. Wines, bed garments, 'unique tobaccos', A pop-up Hookah bar had people sat around on cushions enjoying conversation. The atmosphere was bouncing and the smell of late-night snack foods sizzled from under certain tents.

He wasn't meant to be here and it made the romance of it all so much stronger. He swung round a lamp post and skipped once before strolling into the market...eyeing the wares as he walked alongside them. It was when he passed a jewelry stall that he seemed to feel that swell of excitement he knew only too well from looking at Jaxamir's amulet. The dragon in him needed something off that stall. He picked out his target from afar, what he thought might have been a ruby amulet.

He feigned awe as he looked around, turning this way and that. The vendor tried to warn him but it was too late, he bumped hard into the table and knocked one of the displays crashing to the ground in front of the vendor, a rack of earrings "Oh no!!! Oh no i'm so sorry! let me help, let me-" the vendor yelled at him and threw his arms up "LOOK WHERE YOU'RE GOING KID!" he raged "I don't want your help!"

Enfield waited for the guy to bend down to start gathering up the scattered wares and then slipped his hand under the lid into the display case that held the more expensive goods, quickly procuring the ruby amulet silently and casually before slipping it into his pocket and walking away with a casual grin and shrug "Sorry Mister, I'll be more careful next time~"

It was the tobacco that got his attention that night, and Jack wandered without any company, simply because any of the noble-born lot wandering around that late was unlikely. Still, he could atleast enjoy some quiet before he had to work. Maybe. He'd wave to the people who didn't seem concerned about the vampiric guard appearing (most knew what he was at this rate), but then, commotion.

Enfield's clumsy display held Jack's attention quick and he watched for the moment, picking up on those sneaky fingers. He may be off-duty, but maybe he could make a game of it. Get the item back, perhaps find out if he was some random urchin he hadn't seen before or someone's wayward child looking for the thrill of getting away with something big.

He'd pay for the tobacco he had picked out and trailed after Enfield at a casual pace, pretending to be more interested in filling his pipe rather than the dragon infront of him. For the sake of avoiding the dragon being clever and slinking to one of the alleys, Jack made it appear as if there was an obstacle in each and every one. Strange, perhaps, but it was likely things that most people would expect there.

Degu — 02/22/2021
Enfield had been eyeing side alleys for an easy way to slip away but when a couple were blocked he just shrugged and shouldered his guitar around to the front to start playing a simple tune as he made his way along, flicking his tail in time to the music. It was cheerful, he was clearly on cloud nine, infatuated with the feeling that followed his first real theft. He tapped his claws on the pavement, grinning impishly as he headed across the bridge instead towards a rather empty town square.

He was supposedly too busy congratulating himself to notice a whole lot, and if left to his own devices he'd head on over to the fountain and perch proudly upon the edge, crossing his legs and bouncing his heels as he strummed and whistled to his own happy tune. He wanted to look at it, he wanted to touch his prize and feel the weight of something valuable in his palm. He needed to find a fence to sell it to... which meant delving into a world he had no stake in, yet.

Rook — 02/22/2021
Jack would let him wander, still, as if he'd gotten away with it all and they were soon by a fountain. It was then he'd make his approach and he exhaled a lungful of smoke, while he settled next to the young dragon. "You've got something good there." He said if the boy hadn't looked up at his presence being suddenly there, and he dumped a few ashes from the pipe to the ground.

"The distraction was pretty good, but rather common. I guess you're new to this." He looked more interested in the guitar, and considered it a moment. "Was this a gift? Or something you managed to get away with it at some point as well?" The vampire asked, looking down at Enfield again with a raised eyebrow. "So, necessity or for the thrill of risks?"

Degu — 02/22/2021
Any normal kid would have been mortified the moment someone let on that they'd figured them out over this. Not Enfield, he was drunk on success, smirking and slowing to a steady, gentle strum without even looking up at Jack. The pipe was a welcome, familiar smell. It reminded him of his dad for obvious reasons, but maybe this wasn't a good time to be thinking about Max.

"Yeah I'm new. It worked though, didn't it?" he said with a plucky glance and an even more impish grin towards Jack at last. Then he looked back down to his guitar "This is mine, my parents got it for me." He strummed a nasty set of off-keys and depending on how strong Jack was against the effects of bard song, it might feel nauseating just as a side-effect.

"Oh one hundred percent thrill. I don't need this stuff." he snorted cheekily.

Rook — 02/22/2021
He didn't take long for him to finish off the tobacco in his pipe, as he listened to Enfield with an amused expression and he tucked it away in one of his pouches once he was sure it was no longer burning. "Did it? I mean, I know you've done it. Imagine if other people did." He waved a finger at Enfield and immediately pressed it to his forehead, but the touch was quick. Simply an attempt to mock him, right?

The bard song certainly did its magic, and he inhaled sharply, though he played it off as well as he could. "Pardon, new tobacco." Atleast he wasn't getting too sick infront of him, he could atleast swallow that down. "So what now, then? You're going to wear this necklace? Give it to your mother?"

Degu — 02/22/2021
Enfield laughed and yanked his head away as he felt that touch to his forehead. One might ...regret such a decision. Enfield's thoughts were not linear nor were they prioritized, they were grand, they were simple, they were chaotic and all the time there was music playing in the background, or tunes tried to write themselves and the lyrics mumbled and sang over the tune only to repeatedly stop with a 'no' before starting again with corrections. But among all of this smothering and overpowering fog were the thoughts at the forefront, barely.

This guy's weird. Wonder what his game is. Obviously trying to get some kind of result out of this, might be after the amulet... might be looking to mentor you in some grand thievery but that's doubtful. Can't tell what his intentions are. Dad'll be pissed about this. Wonder what mum would think, she might be vaguely impressed. I have to tell Akka and Raali at least.

His mind wandered repeatedly to different attractive people he'd seen throughout the day too, typical teenager and he wasn't paying Jack a whole lot of attention really. The amulet kept flashing across his mind and the sense of pride he had in what he'd done.

"Figured I'd just sell it." he shrugged "who wants to know?"

What is this guys deal anyway? is he a guard? I can run faster. Bet he can't fly... then again, that smell... maybe he can.

Rook — 02/22/2021
It took a lot to work through Enfield's chaotic, musical thoughts, but it was an interesting thing. A shame he couldn't comment on the boy's very busy mind. "Yes, but you have to find someone who will buy it and not just take it. If you're going down that path, you've got to realize there's others who won't even waste the coin when they can use a knife instead."

Jack patted a hand gently against that obviously cherished guitar, only to give an immediate bit of advice. "Wouldn't take this with you either. A necklace is one thing, a well-crafted instrument will catch the eye of people wanting something for a more refined collection." He said, considering the dragon a moment.

"I'm sure losing a gift from your parents would devastate them."

Degu — 02/23/2021
'The dead guy has a point, Enfield. - Yeah though I could probably cook anyone who tried to take it! or eat them. - You're still a kid, you overestimate your own abilities and overcompensate with dumb stupidity and confidence - Another valid point, me, but I won't stop me! No one can! not even me! - At least do it right. We need to sell it - Oh it'd be nice in my hoard though... what if I can't part with it? I kind of want to keep it. But the money could buy books. - And just think what we could learn with those books. The dragon in the mountain isn't willing to part with any of his hoard, but there are books here in the city that you can purchase. Books with songs of power very few other students may be privy to. - This is true, I do prefer books and this stupid amulet isn't even enchanted. - Why keep it if it isn't enchanted? it's worthless to us. - Yeah agreed. Okay, we sell it, we get books.'

Unfortunately in this time where Enfield was reasoning with himself he just kind of zoned out and stopped responding, thoughtfully looking up at the sky as he strummed.

'Did we respond to him? - I don't know. - Hm.... wait no we didn't, shit.'

He snapped his head towards Jack and smiled awkwardly "What I MEANT to say- is you're right, sure. This wasn't stolen, the guitar is mine... I haven't stolen before, at least not technically. Ok so I need to be careful... good point, don't turn up with the goods, don't store them at home either. Set up a rendezvous, make the exchange ... but even then" he stopped strumming and tapped at his jaw, stroking the scraggly fuzz there.

"Gotta make sure they know I can eat them..." even then he could get stabbed and that'd upset his family, he was sure it'd be easier to do all this without emotional attachments but he wasn't going to complain about them while he still had them.

'Hope he isn't threatening to take this guitar.'

"I won't be losing it."

Rook — 02/23/2021
If he didn't know any better, Jack would've chuckled at these thoughts - Enfield had a lot more going on than he was now expecting. However, the mention of a dragon in the mountain was an interesting bit of information. However, all that came to an end when Enfield finally replied to him and he looked over again. "There's still many ways it could go wrong, the city's got a good number of people who aren't going to take your threats seriously."

He pointed out, looking for wherever he may have stashed said necklace and would sniff sharply. "You are afterall...how old are you?" Jack asks, turning away as if to focus elsewhere and he'd pinch at the bridge of his nose. "Very good, but taking it with is still a poor idea."

Degu — 02/23/2021
"Sixteen" he said simply. "Yeah you're right...though I guess it's kind of like my weapon too" he strummed hard and the indirect magic behind the strum could possibly cause a brief but fleeting headache.

'Something smells odd.'

He sniffed the air and glanced at Jack before shrugging and leaping off the fountain.

'Ditch this guy, he's probably trouble. Might be after your hard work, we'll find a buyer later this week'

"Well as much fun as this has been~! And all advice taken into account and filed away for a later date...! I'd better be off" he saluted with a cheeky grin as he turned to step back.

Rook — 02/23/2021
The headache just added to the one he was already gaining, but atleast it didn't agitate any bleeding further. "Yeah, about that." The vampire stood up, as Enfield moved to step back. "It's probably better you give it back. I mean, you could run, but you've already confessed everything to me and really, the market place isn't a far walk back."

Jack sighed, as if exasperated. "I'm off-duty, but I still saw and was very much told things. I can let you off with a warning afterwards, but your little guitar thing was annoying. It'd likely be the equivalent of punching me and I'm certainly not appreciative of that."

Degu — 02/23/2021
Enfield grinned. It was perhaps to his benefit that his thoughts and his reactions to his impulses often happened almost simultaneously but Jack would have a few bare seconds heads up before the dragon turned to flee, giggling madly. He sounded gleeful about it, leaping and bounding as he ran "Catch me if you can, guardy-poo!" he cackled noisily and leapt for a nearby crate, using his wings to give him some lift to try and get up onto the rooftop of...ironically, the butchers.

Rook — 02/23/2021
"I took you as a runner." Jack said, though he followed from below the first time. Quinne likely showed up at one point to find out what that noise was, offering distraction for the fellow vampire for the moment.

Of course, Jack didn't intend to give up the chase right then. He'd use the unnatural speed granted from his race and scaled up whatever building Enfield went to next, defying gravity for that one moment. He'd be gaining fast likely, but sent the illusion forth of one building closer than it actually was in hopes the young dragon would fail to actually reach it.

Degu — 02/23/2021
Enfield was cackling as if this were the best day of his life, even spinning a pirouette on the rooftop as he fled. Cocky, because he got ahead "All that speed and still too slow!" he called back, giggling as he leapt from the roof to the next building and hit the side of it instead. He grabbed on with wide eyes and quickly scrambled with his claws to get up. That was odd... he'd seen how close that building was but then it hadn't been.

He didn't have time to think, grinning like a damn chimp as he bolted to the end where the canal divided the town square from the park. He jumped and opened his wings out to glide across the water with the intention of folding them into a dive as he got close enough.

Rook — 02/23/2021
"Is it?" Enfield had managed to correct himself given the scramble up the roof, much to Jack's chagrin. The dragon continued onwards and over the canal, but the vampire didn't have the luck of actually flying. Not as he was anyway. Instead, he moved down and just crossed over one of the bridges.

"I hope you're running to somewhere useful, kid." Jack said, and waited to see where Enfield went next. The vampire, however, sought an alley and made himself appear suddenly absent as if he just decided to leave.

Degu — 02/23/2021
Was he running anywhere useful? probably not. But he wasn't running home, he carried on running towards the edge of town but not towards the forest, towards the mountains and lake Penmoor (aka North), if he could just reach the edge of town he could change forms and take off for the mountains until the heat died down. He wasn't going to stop, though, but he did look back and laugh when he saw no sign of Jack. Hah! he lost him! at that made him at least slow down and stumble a bit. And now he wasn't on the roofs, he was weaving along small side streets instead at a more leisurely pace.

He slowed to pretend he was just taking a stroll when two guardsmen passed up the far end of the street. Unlucky, hopefully they'd just pass.

Rook — 02/23/2021
Despite this, Jack avoided other people too, so he didn't have to overuse his abilities. It wouldn't do to suddenly appear, bloodied and with a migraine. Enfield weaved about and he continued to follow, minding those two guards.

If they'd greeted him, of course, game over. He waited until they were gone to approach Enfield from behind, even if it was likely the boy would be moving again and he'd reach to grab hold of the guitar. "So, about that necklace." Despite his planning, one eye still held a blotchy red mark near the left corner.

Degu — 02/23/2021
Enfield gasped and turned around to look at Jack, taking a step back and frowning. He thought about getting out his guitar and using it, but that was a good way to get kicked out of bard school if he ever heard of one! He pursed his lips to the side. "Fine...fine..." he sighed and reached for the satchel "Take it-"

And then he spun and bolted again with a terrible giggle "Psyche! Help help! an off duty guard is after me!" he cackled furiously "I'm innocent! I didn't do anything! help help!" he cried out between bubbling giggles. The two guards up the street turned around only in time to see his tail disappearing into the next alley, both of them frowning and heading curiously back to investigate.

Rook — 02/23/2021
Jack didn't relinquish his grip just yet, even if he had to shift a bit to accomodate Enfield turning to face him. "Good, let's-" Of course, the boy called out to the other guards and the vampire's grip was forced to shift again, two fingers slid through the gap between wood and strings. An intentional movement.

"Now just-." And, Enfield bound away, but Jack's fingers tugged strings out as a result and he let him be with an almost mocking wave. "Good evening." He greeted the fellow guards, turning to face them. "Unfortunately, he's just gone off with an item stolen from the marketplace. We can go to the vendor about his missing necklace and notify that boy's parents, but I'm not chasing him further."

Degu — 02/23/2021
The two guards exchanged a look and frowned "Do you know who his parents are?" the kid was already too far for them to get him, but they could spread the word for others to keep an eye out "Probably best if you provide a description to the captain when you sign in for shift. What are we looking for here? We saw a tail, nothing more."

Enfield bailed, though the broken strings were painful. How many strings could he buy with this amulet though? plenty he reckoned.

Rook — 02/23/2021
"I don't, but I'm sure it won't be easy to find out. There was mention of an 'Akka' and a 'Raali'." Well, not through Enfield's mouth, but it'd work. "We'll get a sketch up since I do remember his appearance, and he's a dragon. Sixteen, cocky and carries around a nice-looking guitar."

However, it was probably time to go see which Captain was about. "I'm off-duty, but I'm going to go deal with this report, since he'll likely sell the necklace somewhere tonight." Jack said, stepping away from them. "Keep up the good work."

To the guard-house he'd go!

Degu — 02/23/2021
Jack would pass on his artwork and his description and a poster would be put up only in the city center with the picture of Enfield 'Do you know this boy? Contact the Barracks for a 20 shard reward.'

It wasn't spread through the town, but left there in the hopes that some disappointed parents out there that might see it. Enfield on the other hand snuck back to the forest and back in his bedroom window after a few hours to make sure he was in his bed before the sun rose.
