Help » How does the inbox and private messaging work?

Table of Contents

Where is the inbox located?

On desktop: If you have unread messages, an envelope icon will appear in the header . This is a shortcut to the inbox. If you do not have any unread messages, the inbox link is under your account menu (appears as your username) in the top right of the header.

On mobile: Look for this icon in the header:

How do I send a private message?

  • Navigate to your inbox, and then click the "Start Conversation" button at the top of the sidebar.
  • Click in the "recipients box" and start typing the name of who you wish to send the message to. The site will search for matches -- click the character or user you wish to add when it is found. You may add as many people as you wish to the conversation.
  • Enter a title into the "Subject" input.
  • Choose who you want to send the message as (either as yourself or as one of your characters)
  • Write your message into the large text area.
  • Click "Send"

There is a deleted or inactive user in my private message conversation - how do we complete a vote on a new person joining the conversation?

You may not be able to. This is not a bug and will not be changed. Here's why:

The point of requiring everyone to "okay" a new person is that the first word in private messages is private. If you're talking to a trusted friend in confidence, you would not want to discover someone else was granted access to that conversation weeks or months later and saw all the things you said in confidence. This is why every single participant in that conversation has a chance to clearly understand who is being added, what that means, and to give their consent before anyone can join. This even includes deleted users or users who have left the conversation; they don't give up their privacy even after leaving the conversation or the site.

If you find yourself stuck in a situation where a deleted or inactive user is preventing you from adding someone to a private message conversation, your best bet is to start a new private message conversation with the new group you wish to talk to.

How do I archive a message?

Navigate to your inbox. Click the checkbox next to the conversation thread you want to archive.

Scroll to the bottom of the page, and find the drop down "______ all checked messages." Change the setting to "Archive" and then click "Go"

How do I view archived messages?

Navigate to your inbox, and then click the link "Show Archived Messages" in the sidebar.

How do I organize my private messages into folders?

Navigate to your inbox, and then click the link "Manage Folders" in the sidebar.

Click "Add a folder"

Name your folder, and then click "submit"

Now that you've got a folder, go back to your inbox. Put a check next to each conversation thread you want to move, then scroll to the bottom of the page and change the "______ all checked messages" drop down to "Move". Choose the folder you want to move them to in the drop down that appears, and click go.

Alternatively, you can simply drag conversations over to the desired folder in the sidebar.

How do I add someone to an inbox conversation?

Everyone in the conversation will have to agree to adding a new person. Here's how it works:

  1. If you're on desktop: Look in the sidebar, under the list of PM conversation participants. If you're on mobile: Look beneath the reply text area. You'll see a link that says " Add someone" Click it!
  2. Start typing the name of the user or character that you want to add. When you see the correct person get pulled up, click their name.
  3. You'll be asked to confirm that you want to add that person.
  4. A vote will then be initiated inside of that private message conversation.
    • Even if you initiated the vote yourself, you still have to cast a vote. This is to offer you one last chance to change your mind, or correct a miss-click.
    • Voting is confidential, though if there are only two of you in a conversation, your friend may be able to guess what your vote was. ;)
    • You cannot vote "yes" on someone you've blocked.
    • Every single user who is participating will have to agree that they want this new person added. If there are any no votes, the request to add the new person is immediately denied.
  5. If you do get unanimous agreement from all members of your private message conversation to add someone new, Server will make an announcement in your conversation at the moment the new person is added. Server will even use the new OOC parenthesis to make this announcement in case you are adding someone to a RP!
  6. The new person is then a full member of the conversation, and will also take part in any future voting.
  7. If you get added to a PM conversation you don't want to be in, remember that you can always leave by clicking the next to your name in the list of conversation participants.

How do I remove myself from a private message conversation?

In the list of conversation participants, you will see a Remove from conversation next to any identities you own that are taking part in the conversation. That means your username, and any of your characters that might be present.

Click the Remove from conversation and confirm you want to remove that identity. If you remove all of your identities, you will no longer have access to that private message conversation, unless all remaining members vote to add you back in.

Restricting who can send you private messages

Go to Your account menu (appears as your username) » Account Settings » Comfort and Privacy Settings.

Under Privacy settings, locate the setting "Who can initiate private message conversations with you?"

Your options are:

  • Everyone
  • Only friends
  • My age group (under 18 or over 18, depending on your own registered age) and my friends

These settings only stop people from initiating conversations with you. Already started private message conversations will not be cut off. If someone else starts the conversation and adds someone not on your friends list or outside of your age group, you could still end up talking with those people. You can still vote-in new members of an existing conversation who are not in your friends list/age group. Only the OP (original poster) of the private message conversation is subject to these restrictions.

These settings will not prevent Kim or the moderators from initiating a conversation with you.

If you choose to not accept messages from people outside of your age group, but make someone outside your age group your friend, that person will be able to bypass the age controls.

These settings are intended to help decrease unwanted "spam" RP requests or other situations that some people may find uncomfortable or worrying, but you are still required to use good judgement and take care to keep yourself safe online. Contact the moderators if you ever need assistance!

I was doing a look-see for how the ‘Deleted Messages’ system works, namely, how long a message will be available in the Deleted Bin before it is removed?
