Who would have thought that such a gigantic cave system could exist beneath the continent? Sunken in an ocean of its own for millennia, civilisations have risen and fallen there. Explorers from the open sea now embark on an adventure into the ancient ruins, exploring what is left of a once-thriving ecosystem...

This RP requires the use of an aquatic character. Though any such species could potentially work, this RP would work best for characters of the Keppi species (this is NOT mandatory). Keppi are an open species, and you are free to make your own provided you follow the attribution and usage rules outlined on Button's profile!

Button enjoyed visiting the beach. Whilst dry land wasn't exactly the most comfortable of environments for them, there was always so much to explore. They had been visiting this spot for a few days now, documenting their observations in the journal they had stashed in a nearby kelp forest. A nearby cave had been pestering their attention for a while, but they were yet to have the courage to look inside. Not least because the tide never quite seemed to reach the mouth of the cave, and they knew they would be vulnerable to whatever dry land predators stalked these parts if they tried to traverse the gap. But the very question of what lay within a typical dry-land cave was one they were sure was not answered by the great keppi library... and to be the first to provide answers to such a question was a tempting thought for any keppi - and Button was more willing to visit the surface than most. Perhaps one day, Button would find a source of courage to push themselves to take the journey...

So this is a fairly straight-forward premise. A couple of sea folks explore a terrestrial cave that turns out to be sunken underwater part way in and lead off into a vast series of underwater caverns completely cut off from the wider ocean. The secluded underwater world is in ruins, but some vestiges of intelligent life still remains in a sort of post-apocalyptic state. The goal of the adventure is to discover the history of this ancient place... and perhaps along the way, find out how to kick-start the slow restoration of civilisation there.
I suppose in a way, the exploration aspect of this idea is quite metroidvania-like. That is, the game genre. Delving deeper into a strange land that is the shadow of its former self, finding some sort of problem there that has led to this state, and overcoming it. Only unlike most metroidvania games, there'll probably be less hostiles and more friendly(-ish) settlements around. Aside from the occasional moment, this RP will primarily take place underwater.
Expect colourful environments, strange sea creatures and the slow uncovering of an ancient backstory.
Character-wise, I'm looking for an explorer-type. Somewhat more scout-esque in capabilities (so no super-powerful fighters or characters who can't look after themselves - this is more a survival exploration RP than an action one, but someone with no fighting ability at all might struggle). Encounters with bad guys will likely revolve around fleeing and hiding, setting traps or being clever; but in turn, will require a level of athleticism to stay alive.
Magic is fairly common. Players and NPCs important to the tale may have it. Mistborn.
Industrial revolution
Combat is woven into the storyline and could come to the forefront if the characters seek it out.
No romance at all will be included in this plot, period.
