How do I make the background of them transparent? I've tried white and black for backgrounds, and they just render them white and black squares with an icon in the middle.

You need to save the icon as a transparent PNG or GIF. The site doesn't make anything transparent for you, so you have to edit it in a program first before you upload it. 
Depending on what program you have, instructions on how to do that differ. Here's a tutorial that describes how to do it with Photoshop:
If you don't have Photoshop, Google the name of your program and the phrase "creating transparent image". Such as "GIMP creating transparent image". Hope that helps!
