For many years, a great fortress that overlooked vast fields and blocked the advance of armies kept a kingdom safe. Said to be the last holdout of the ancient mages before their passing, the fortress was protected by magic, taking no damage from siege or age or weather. In time, without the magical seals refreshed, some time worn damage finally came to the empty fortress. For generations, the fortress was empty, sealed by the last mage. It was thought that the fortress could no longer be entered, yet many who gained the land tried. Finally, the king who wished the fortress opened up learned of a distant bloodline of the last mage, a bastard son had passed a spark, and the current descendant had been found. Intent on bringing the fortress back to glory, the king granted the fortress to the young woman who had the only means of entering. The king did not quite know if she was common, or highborn, but he would make sure she at least attempted to break the seal that barred entry into the great structure.
Magic may be accepted as truth but is not common. It might be harnessed only by specific beings. Lord of the Rings, Game of Thrones.
Renaissance
Unrest may be part of the setting, but any scenes that happen to involve combat may be summarized.
