Is there a way to withdraw an accidental friend request, hopefully without the recipient getting a notification (if the withdraw is fast enough)? 
I don't know if it will mitigate the notification, but if you go to the 'friends' tab and scroll to the bottom, pending friend requests will be displayed and a little cross beside them which I believe withdraws the pending request.
