Once upon a time, a lone man known only as the Dollmaker lived by himself, far away from the bustle of everyday life. Though he made his living off of making children's toys, he was displeased with his life, having no time for a wife or children of his own. One night, while the man was still very young, he had a very dark dream in which he made a deal with a spirit. She promised to give him the power to be pleased with his life, under the condition that he would not know how to use this power.

He took the offer, and woke to find his barren shelves filled with bottles. Each bottle contained a wisp. There were two wisps for each colour, and as the sun rose on his cottage, they glittered like stained glass, each humming with a different tone. Not long after, a man arrived with a brand new kiln and massive shipload of clay, fabric, and all manner of other materials he would need to make dolls.

For the next thirty years, the Dollmaker continued to make dolls, but he secretly began to make life-sized dolls as well. Unlike with his normal dolls, he found that this special clay would mould into life-like features under his fingers, that the glass eyes seemed to have a degree of life in them, and that the fabrics would fall much more naturally over the dolls. Each life-sized doll he completed, he would imbue them with one of the wisps. He discovered that the wisps brought to life his creations, as if they were real, living humans, and each colour was a different personality. He began to make a pair, one male and one female, for each colour, but as his supply of wisps began to dwindle, he feared what would happen to the children he had made thus far.

Upon completion of his eleventh pair, the Dollmaker stared, frightened, at the final set of wisps.

Each pair of dolls he had made were pleasant, ranging from sweet and kind dolls to mischievous dolls. None of them were really evil. Only one was very angry, though the pleasant happiness of that doll's match outweighed the anger. Despite his foreboding feeling about the final pair, the Dollmaker made a male and a female, and was devastated by the result. The final amount of clay went into making perhaps the most beautiful set of dolls he had ever made, but they were terribly cruel, violent, and evil.

Dragica, the female of the pair, was one of many sent away all at once on separate errands for their creator. Her match, and eighteen other dolls, were also sent away. The remaining four were still at home with their creator. The forces of good, however, discovered the Dollmaker and his witchcraft, and persecuted him. They murdered the Dollmaker, his four dolls, and every other creation he had made, scattering his remaining twenty dolls to the wind, with or without their matches.

Still just as cruel without her match, Dragica wanders the country looking for him.
