So I had this idea a while back for a roleplay set in 90's, where a few teenagers develop 'powers'. None of them know why, and most of them keep it super secret because they're worried about being nabbed by the government and dissected.

This is a time when the internet is just starting to make its way into homes. Not everyone has it, its still small enough to be fairly regulated, and it's no where near as user friendly as it is today...search engines are difficult to use and there's not much for them to work with, and social media has yet to be invented. Searching for this 'powers spontaneously developing' phenomenon online yields little in the way of results, perhaps because most of the teens who get powers are too afraid of the government tracking them down to dare even try to search.

The powers can be pretty varied, from things like animals obeying orders to manipulation of electricity to telepresense. Nothing overly world shattering, nothing that would let someone Thanos snap their way through armies. Just little things that teens might find 'rad' but not think were enough to protect them from people wanting to study them or force them to use their powers for ill.

I have two possible avenues for this idea...one is a one on one roleplay where I'll take the roll of a club of kids in a small town who've banded together to keep each other's secret. They'd be seen as looser washout hooligans by the grownups of the town, always hanging out in their river valley clubhouse, slacking off, not respecting authority. My partner would play a new kid who moves to town with their parents, develops powers, and is approached by the hooligan club as they figure it out and want to help the new kid, but the new kid thinks they're just typical hooligans and wants nothing to do with them, and sees their antics as an annoyance they don't need on top of trying to figure out these weird powers. In this scenario, I'd be looking for a partner who's interested in having some one else handle most of the world building so they can focus on a character or three they want to play with. I don't care much about the specifics of the 'new kid', other than them not being the type to be thrilled with their new powers and immediately start showing off in front of people. This would be a character driven story, more than a 'crazy things are happening, how will the characters react' sort of thing.

The other possibility is turning this into an open thread, typing up a fairly detailed explanation of the world and the mechanics I'm hoping to play with, and then each person who wants to join can make their own '90's teen with powers' and the story can develop from everyone's interactions.


I'm interested in peoples take's on this idea, and suggestions on how to flesh it out a little in ways that work with other people.

Are you more interested in the open forum or the one on one?

i'm honestly super down for both but if i had to choose, i'd prefer the specificity of a 1v1 over a group.

This might be a bit of a long shot, but I'm desperate to try this character out in some form or another...

If I reduced this character's abilities to having been 'mutated' into his hybrid form, without any further powers, with it bringing increased (to animalistic levels, not anything supernatural) agility and speed, but retaining his ability to take human form when under medication (which in this case would be the form he used to have prior to gaining his 'powers'), would that be acceptable?

Or are such wholesale physical alterations beyond the scope of your idea?

That's a little too much for the point of this story. The idea is for it to be a character driven story...the teens all interacting and hiding their abilities from the world. Unless this lizard-like physiology could be reasonably hidden from all the adults and non powered children, the family of the teen included, that wouldn't work for the idea I had. It could work for a more plot driven story, where the government is coming for the lizard kid and the other kids are using their powers to try and defend them, but I don't have a plot thought up for a satisfying climax to that scenario.

id be interested i think ty would be perfect, and itd be a nice first rp for me to flesh out there personality and all that.
