I'm not sure how much these would help, but I've found them useful over the years. Mainly for games where live RP occurs, not via email/forum.

#1: If you're the first one who has to leave in a two person RP and you're pausing it rather than ending the scene, always be the last one to post. By committing to the last post, you're indicating to the other person that you are interested in continuing it at a later date and are invested in the RP.

#2: If you want to make the most out of your RP time and are continuing an RP, and you weren't the person who posted last, set aside some time to type your next post up before you next see that person and save it in a notepad file. That way when you resume you're immediately back into it - not waiting 5-15 minutes for your first post to be done.

#3: If you have to AFK, tell your partner and include at least a vague reason why you're going AFK, or a timeframe. Do you need to walk the dog? They can expect to be waiting 5-10 minutes. Do you need to pick up a friend from the airport? They can expect to wait a lot longer than that. If you may be going AFK longer than 30 minutes, do your partner the courtesy of letting them decide if they want to find another RP rather than setting aside the next 30 (and possibly much more) minutes for your return.
