Raven Hall School for Magic has always aimed to prepare young mages for the world. A world where magic is very regulated and controlled. Upon graduation, every mage is to join a coven with the Gold Coven being the best. If a mage does not join a coven then they are stripped of their powers and being a powerless mage in their world means that you are an outcast.
Every year, the Gold Coven picks one student from Raven Hall to join their coven. This year it’s Y/C who is the top pick. His parents are already members and he is student council president. He is in charge of keeping all the students in line. While popular, he has very few actual friends and spends most of his time practicing for his entrance exam. Everyone knows he is going to get it, Y/C is one of the most skilled mage’s in the 7th year class. One of the most skilled. To his great annoyance, there is one other who could take his place.
Charlotte “Charlie” Defrene, his rival and his biggest headache. Her mother is famous for avoiding capture for years when she refused to join a coven, not wanting her magic to be controlled. She is caught and her magic is taken away. Her mother had been a candidate for the Gold Coven. Charlie seems to have the same potential, the only mage in school who can match Y/C’s magic though that is where the similarities end. Charlie doesn’t seem to take the school or her magic very seriously despite how skilled she is. She is goofing off and her favorite pastime is figuring how to piss off Y/C because she finds it funny when his face gets all red from being flustered, angry, or embarrassed.
The two of them are complete opposites and they both clearly hate each other except, they really don’t. Both of them secretly are crushing on the other though both are too stubborn to admit it to themselves.

Magic is fairly common. Players and NPCs important to the tale may have it. Mistborn.
Modern
Combat is expected as part of the storyline but it won't dominate the plot.
Romance is required from early on, but there will be some semblance of a plot beyond the relationship.
