I think what might help - at least when explaining it to others - is to define what freestyle means to you.

Welcome to RPR! I hope you're enjoying the site! It was difficult for me to get used to writing para format again after I was used to doing Tumblr based, IC chat-based RP, so I totally get where you're coming from, haha. It's just a matter of getting used to it. There's plenty of fun experimental stuff you can do with para or lit format, so don't feel concerned that it might constrain you or anything!
