For those of you wondering how this answer could be arrived at, here's a quick explanation.
It used to be that every year when you got your flu vaccine, you got inoculated against four different major strains of flu. Thus, the vaccine was known as the quadravalent flu vaccine, quad meaning four.
This may be the first year that we start to get trivalent flu vaccines all around the world as the new standard, only protecting against three major strains of flu instead of four. Why? That fourth strain, known as B Yamagata, hasn't been detected anywhere in the world since March 2020 -- when the world took extreme measures to try and slow down the spread of Covid 19. In addition to slowing the spread of Covid, we appear to have eliminated the spread of B Yamagata, and it's thought to have gone extinct. Go team!
