The lights weren’t even that bright, just a few fairy strands strung between vendor tents and an old spotlight humming above the makeshift stage, but Jordyn had been riding a high.

Local art fair, summer air thick with the smell of kettle corn and acrylic paint, kids dancing barefoot in the grass. It was her favorite kind of gig: low-pressure, full of warmth, no managers breathing down her neck.

And she was feeling it.

So much so that, mid-song, she decided to try a little spin move she’d seen someone do on TikTok, guitar slung low, hair flip, full rockstar fantasy.

Except...
Her boot caught on the edge of a stray extension cord. She missed her footing, flailed, and crashed spectacularly into a stack of decorative crates beside the stage. The crowd gasped, a kid screamed, and somewhere in the chaos, her shoulder made a sickening pop.

Classic Jordyn.

Now, hours later, the gentle buzz of fluorescent lights overhead felt like an insult. Her arm was immobilized in a temporary sling, her lip was split, and her collarbone ached with the dull, rhythmic throb of a body learning its limits. The nurse who’d admitted her said something about a dislocation, maybe a hairline fracture. Nothing too serious, but enough to sideline her from performing or trying any silly stunts for a bit.

She looked entirely out of place in the sterile hospital bed, still in her stage outfit, a sunny yellow crop top clashing wildly with her glittery blue flare pants. Her freckles were half-covered in makeup and sweat; her bangs stuck to her forehead, and her eyeliner had smudged to raccoon levels. Someone had sliced through the wrist of her favorite patchwork jacket to get it off. Tragic.

And yet... she was smiling.
Well, sort of.
Only because smiling too big would tug on the split in her lip.

She looked over slowly at her twin sister, who stared at her wide-eyed and nervous. Oh, she always got so nervous about this stuff. Jordyn grinned at her and reached out her free hand, wincing a little at the soreness she felt in her shoulder. “Hey- Juni I’m okay. No biggie at all.”

Her sister squinted her eyes at her and sighed softly. “I told you not to do that stupid Tiktok trick on stage.”
Jordyn let out a little laugh in response to her sister. “Sorry, it just looked too fun!”

Then, the door creaked open. Jordyn glanced up, bracing herself for another lecture on taking pain meds or signing discharge forms.
Instead, a woman in light blue scrubs entered with a tablet in hand and a kind of grounded, unhurried energy that made Jordyn’s shoulders drop.. Her badge read Charlie, but it was her expression that caught Jordyn’s attention first. Calm. Centered. Like nothing about this job could rattle her.

Jordyn blinked, then brightened automatically. “Oh. Hi. Please tell me you’re not here to jab me with something. I’ve been poked enough today to qualify as a voodoo doll.” Her grin was tired but still a little mischievous.

“I’m Jordyn,” she added, raising her good hand in a small wave. “I tripped over my own ego and faceplanted into some art crates. Very dramatic. Ten out of ten fall. Would not recommend.”

Juniper rolled her eyes but let out a little laugh, leaning back in her seat next to her sister.
Not even a stage fall that knocks you unconscious could bruise Jordyn’s spirit.

Jordyn’s voice softened just a little as she tilted her head. “Are you my nurse? Please say yes. Everyone else here is soo serious. Including this one.” She gave a little eye movement to her sister, who was still pretty stiff in her seat.
Charlie rubbed the bridge of her nose with her thumb and forefinger, it was late towards the middle of the second half of a double shift and she could smell herself already. Her feet hurt, her legs hurt, and she was hungry.

Have I eaten?"

"Thanks Charlie, you've been a rock." Charlie looked up and saw the ward sister Samantha smiling at her.

"What? Sorry?"

"Doing a double for me today, I don't know what I'd do without you. Can you look at the TikTok rockstar in three before you go for a break - you ARE going for a break."

"Thanks Sam, I'll go check in on her. What are we waiting for?"

The sister passed Charlie the notes on a tablet and she looked through them as she walked over to the room. The patient had dislocated her shoulder which had been reset in good order, but also been knocked unconscious, they had done a CAT scan just in case, they were waiting for a Doctor, but would keep her in overnight for observation, it was standard with head trauma.

She paused outside the room, adjusted her hair, gave herself a experimental sniff and put her professional face on. Opening the door she walked in with a warm smile.

She saw two women who looked as if they must be sisters, if not twins and smiled.

"Goodness I'm seeing double!" She joked, putting the tablet down on the table, she was unhurried as she moved around the room, checked the vitals on the monitors and wrote with a biro on the back of her hand. She stopped and looked up as Miss Belmont addressed her.

"Ha, no more needles, I think you've been poked enough for today, your hand please?"

She took the girls wrist and took her pulse manually, checking it against an expensive looking inverted fob watch that hung off her nurses dress. Nodding as she confirmed the machines results.

"I know Jordyn, it says in your notes, on your wristband and on that little board on the wall behind you." Charlie pointed past the girl and giggled, her laughter was like a warm hug, a little husky, but genuine and kind. She stopped and actively listened as Jordyn told her the story.

"Oh wow so you gave the punters a stunt show eh? I bet your socials have gone crazy! I agree though I don't think you should make a career of it. I just need to check your vision sweetheart. Follow my finger."

She held up a short-nailed, dainty, index finger and moved it, shining a pen light into Jordyn's pretty eyes as she did, passing the finger back and forth and then nodded.

"Okay that's good thank you."

She put the light back in her pocket and stepped back, smiling at Jordyn's sister. She stopped as the girl asked if she was her nurse, pausing to take her in.

She was bubbly and cheerful despite having popped her shoulder out, long dark hair a quick smile, despite the split lip and gorgeous soulful eyes. Add to that her exotic eastern features, perhaps of Korean or Philippine descent. She was lovely, full of radiant energy and Charlie caught herself staring. Moving away she turned her head, her cheeks colouring a little as she answered the question.

"Am I your nurse? Kind of, I guess, well at least for the next four hours." She stifled a yawn, her eyes watering and continued.

"I'm so sorry, we're short-staffed today and I'm well into my second shift, I guess that's why we're not as much fun as usual. And your sister's probably worried about you, or whatever crazy stunt you'll do next -am I right?" She grinned and headed over to the charts to put her notes in, scribbling down her findings.

"How are you feeling? Any excessive pain, visual disturbances, do you need anything for the pain?"

She leaned on the footboard of the bed and leaned in conspiratorially.

"So, the gossip is you're a bit of a TikTok superstar, and were trying some crazy new stage diving trick? Care to give me the long version of the facts in your words?"

Charlie loved watching TikTok, especially the silly dog and cat clips, and having TikTok royalty in was always a good story with the girls.
