Hello all! I thought it would be fun to use this as a chance to brainstorm a new idea for an OC for my original dark fantasy setting, Beatha.

I want ideas for a character that...

....Lives in and/or near bodies of water.

I'd love to hear your ideas!
Carrion beetle x Harvester Moth features.
Ritually buries the bodies of those who die in battle.
Lives on a houseboat made from wood, corpse hide, and bones.

I thought of a beetle too, the great silver water beetle, scavenger living in still water (vulture culture), a humanoid/beetle mix, but more at search of outcasted pirates.
Just an idea

Oooo I really like the idea! Thank you for the suggestion!

Honestly, aquatic bugs kind of scare me (maybe because I keep aquariums, and don't want a rogue dragonfly larvae sitting on a plant i bought to eat all my fish xD) and that works perfectly for the more horror-y vibes i'm going for.

I also reaaallly like the idea of pirates. Hm, maybe a former pirate, or one who is taking a little break from the pirate life, now living a 'quiet' (subjective, lol) life in a house boat similar to the idea Spell had above ^? I really like that harvester moth/butterfly they suggested to! Already so many good ideas. I'm getting inspired :D

Would love to hear other people's ideas too!

Still looking for ideas for this! If it helps, it doesn't have to be a bug invertebrate. Mollusks, crustaceans, arachnids, cnidarians, annelids, bryozoans, echinoderms, etc etc...are all possible avenues for inspiration too that could be incorporated into a humanoid design.

There's one creature that fills all three criteria at once, relatively easy to get a humanoid form as it is a crustacea. Or maybe plenty of them can fusion together to form a humanoid frame, that creature being naturally rather small.
Most of the over 9000 different species are scavengers, but also basically natural food-source for many marine animals. And their natural habitat is the water, oceans or rivers, from tempered to ice cold (arctic oceans).
An intelligent entity has taken over swarms of them, those Amphipods or better known as sea flee, and are on a vengeance against that one creature on earth that causes most trouble, I mean human. The idea comes from a TV series : The swarm/Der Schwarm/Abysses.
An amount of Amphipods could 'imitate' a human, or shapeshift and discover human world to find its weakness.
There could be more horror effect if you make out of the 'human' form some 'immortal' fisherman with his black rubber coat, hoodie and large hat ('I know what you did last summer') and the ability of the entity to 'control' large amount of animals (fish, whales, crabs....).

Dude, first of all...I LOVE SCUDS? I actually have a whole colony of them living in one of my aquariums - very helpful little fellas. But yeah, they are also kinda.....Spooky lol..They definitely have 'swarm-like' tendencies. Like the freshwater ones are tiny and cute, but the marine ones are huuuge. They really do look like little water fleas. (Also, did you know that during mating the male hitches a ride on the back of the female for up to a day or two, so its very common to see a female scud with a male riding on her back. kinda adorable. lol)

So the idea of a bunch of sapient magical amphipod-like creatures that can shapeshift into various forms when they come together -- thats so fitting for them. I do have a thing for writing characters who belong to a pseudo or even full blown hive mind. They are on cleanup duty like any good detrivore, and its the humans (and maybe even some of the fae in my universe, they can be just as bad...) that need to be cleaned up :3

I love that idea. Your mind though, its amazing.

I just adore research, it’s instructive and entertaining, else it’s inspiration of all kind, and whenever it’s not my idea, I mention it.

Anyway, thanks, that’s balm for my soul

alright, here are some of the ideas i have so far for our weird little new oc!
collab oc ideas wrote:
-a spirit of the oceans who instead of taking on one singular vessel to make up their corporeal form, instead is made up of thousands of little vessels. i.e aquatic scavengers.
-often refers to itself as a plural 'they', or 'it'.
-they are basically made up of thousands of little creatures, like scuds/isopods/daphnia/water bugs/bristle worms/etc etc, held together by a mix of illusionary glamours, polymorphy, and control over creatures of the water.
-they have an identity outside of the beings that make up their body, but they have begun to meld into a sort 'hivemind'
-ultimate scavenger, is not necessarily a pirate or smuggler themselves but has worked with them for their own ends
-serves a much greater being (maybe this is where the bobbit worm character could come in??) than itself
-has a vigilante sense of 'justice' against many of the sapient races of beatha, particularly humans and alfar. views them as excess chaff, as a rot that needs to be chewed away to see if theres even any living tissue left to save, or if its rotten to the core.
-wants to believe humans and fae are rotten to the core, often tries to reject ideas and experiences that suggest otherwise
-lives in a houseboat that has a glamour over it to hide the worst of the fact its being slowly eaten away by the elements. covered in barnacles, bioluminescent algae, etc etc. they do their very best to fix and maintain it, as they are attached to their house boat despite its derelict state.
-does odd jobs inbetween basically murdering people it views as contributing to the rot that is encroaching upon the world
-sometimes the critters that make up their body can start 'melting' and falling off them

more ideas incoming as i work on their profile! need to think of a name....
thank you so much to fantax/liz and spell for providing their ideas!

unfortunately i've been in quite the creative and motivational rut. i decided to name them Alicella, after the giant deep sea scud. thought it was a pretty name for a very unpleasant creature! unfortunately i didnt get any art together either because i used up all my commission money, but i did manage to put together a small profile for them here as well as adding a few more tidbits about them.

it's not much, but it was fun to create a whole new different type of character for this! i had fun! hopefully i've been able to be more involved next year, for it was a bit of a struggle to find the energy and motivation to create a whole new character from scratch. i appreciate the help i got from liz and spell!
