Valentine checked her equipment, fingered the trigger to her plasma cutter briefly; it flickered, the baton-like object going orange, red and then off.
It worked, good. That would make the salvaging easier.
The suited woman pressed the button to the docking mechanism and watched as the airlock opened, silent as all was in space. The other ship didn’t have oxygen, noted. She’d been prepared for that. That’s why she’d voided the oxygen in her own cargo bay, where the docking bay was, and had put on her suit.
She stuck the rod back into its holster and began to explore the ship, derelict and abandoned. Good scrap.
Valentine wandered the ship, made marks with her cutter, and notes of where to salvage and what on the return trip. Her rule was simple: explore everything, then cut it up after.
She was at the back of the ship, rotating javelin of metal cut up into different chambers when she found something that made her freeze.
The ship was empty, without oxygen. There didn’t seem to have been a struggle of any kind, it had just been left adrift.
In front of her, along the walls in the final chamber, packed like sardines were crude, old fashioned cryopods. Bulky with fogged portholes the only way to see in, they were one and all dead, not a flicker of red or green light on them to indicate their viability.
However long this ship had been floating in the cold, it had finally ran out of power.
All except for the children. There weren’t many of them compared to the adults and only a few had the green lights saying they were viable for revival, but that was more then she had expected.
She said the first word she’d said in weeks, alone amongst the void on her old ship.
“Fuck.”

Hi there! My name is Merlin and I’m here with a new prompt. It’s similar to my usual ones, in that it’ll end up about kids and parenting, but this time it’s got a sci-fi twist!
My girl Valentine is a scrapper, trawling space to get valuable salvage to sell in the hopes of one day retiring on her home world.
She had never expected to come across children.
What you can expect from this roleplay:
Cute parenting moments - Valentine isn’t a parent, though she’s had a few younger cousins. She’s going to be learning as she goes along.
Anthropological nonsense: it’s been god knows how many thousands of years since the ship she found had last had power. What does society look like compared to before? Did these people even know about other people from other planets? Who are the species in the sleep?
Rags to riches: if this ends long term, Valentine will go from a lonely scrapper on her ship to perhaps a matriarch of a large family, rich and powerful! Who knows?
Drama & mystery: why is this ship dead? Where did these people come from? What will the people from Valentine’s world think of suddenly appearing kids from another time?
All these and more! I’m totally willing to adjust things to work for everyone.
The question you need to answer is who are you? How many of you is there? Are you a teenager on the cusp of adulthood, a toddler just learning to walk? Is it just the one of you or are there multiple kids? I left it vague so you can do as you wish!
If you’re wanting a long term space adventure focused on parental dynamics, this is your place!
I hope to hear from you!

On very, very, rare occasions there may be unexplained, POSSIBLY supernatural events. Minor "environmental" magic. Perhaps implies the existence of a deity or supernatural entity. Or perhaps it's just tricks?
Far future, perhaps interstellar travel (faster than light)
No combat. If problems arise, players may be expected to solve it without resorting to violence.
No romance at all will be included in this plot, period.
