Francis and Morp (played anonymously)

Puppettino's, a coffee shop manned entirely by puppetistas (puppet baristas), was ready for Halloween, having swapped its usual pastel color scheme for the oranges, blacks, greens, and purples of the season. Francis the puppet stood at the counter eyeing a massive bowl of candy by his side. He was wearing a black cape and witches' hat as a costume this year. He drummed his fuzzy green fingers on the counter and mumbled to himself, in a bit of a squawky voice, "No, Francis. You can't have the candy. It's only for the guests!"

Meanwhile, his puppeteer was completely out of sight, hidden under the rather tall counters.

Welcome to Puppettino's, come get your Halloween candy, no strings attached!
A cool wind blew down the street corner and towards Bastrina, swirling red leaves into the air around her, along with the smell of peppermint, chocolate, and mysterious spices with a leading note of cinnamon. The curly-haired baker and her aprons and skirts were ruffled by the breeze - auburn curls, stained sturdy linen, and mismatched prints of gingham and plaid, paisley and sweetheart, scarecrows, crows, and bats. Her matching bat earrings - one of a few matching accents in her outfit - swung merrily in the breeze, and the motion of their owner pushing open the door. The little eyes peered watchfully from below their owner's chin. They seemed as though they may fly away from their chains and escape at any moment! The jingling apples and ceramic teapots on charm bracelets at her wrists clinked rhythmically, like distant, musical laughter, echoing the shop bells across the busy streets. Bastrina looked around for the proprietor of the establishment, and her eyes found... a rather strange sight. She raised an eyebrow, and sauntered toward the counter. "Greetings," she said. "Do you have any peanut butter candy in there, and what are the specials?"
Eris Blaise (played by jennaisante)

Halloween! It’s always lit up Eris's world and felt like her special month because Magic is everywhere. People dressed up, shared spooky tales, and let their imaginations run wild. Eris craved that magic. She lived for it. After all, she worked as an illusionist. Her tricks fooled eyes and minds with ease. She spent hours practicing sleight of hand. Cards flew from her fingers like birds and twisted them into impossible shapes. Today though, she stepped out in her favorite gear. A pink mask covered half her face. It stretched from her forehead down to her lips. The material hugged her skin just right. Underneath, she wore a sleek suit of faux leather and this outfit was for her secret role. Most folks knew her as Eris but when she slipped into this costume, she became the Pink Phantom. The girl pulled off clever pranks and illusions for hire. No one had guessed her real identity because the mask and suit kept her safe.

She landed with a soft thud right in front of a cozy coffee shop. Street lights flickered orange while the Pink Phantom scanned the scene. Her gaze caught on something fun. There was a puppet. AWWWW. Eris's heart skipped. Puppets always charmed her. She grew up watching puppet shows at town fairs. They sparked her love for illusions. Still, this one looked extra lively and she had to check it out! No way she'd pass it by.

Eris dashed over with quick steps. The puppet apparently eyeing for the bag of candies. Those treats sat meant for guests, obviously. Eris grinned under her mask. She leaned in close. "Hi! You're one cute puppet. Trick or treat?"

Bastrina
As soon as the chime above the door rang, Francis' head snapped up and away from the candy bowl. "Welcome to Puppettino's where we serve coffee: No Strings Attached!" Oops. He was supposed to change that wording for Halloween. Oh, well. Puppets make mistakes sometimes, too!

He cupped a hand to his chin, examining the patron closely. "Love your batty earrings! I'm sure I can find some peanut butter somewhere in here, hang on..." His fuzzy hand plunged into the bowl, tossing candy over the edges in search for it. A reese's. There it was, right near the bottom. "AAAAH-Haaaaaaaaaa! Here ya go, bats." He reared his arm back a few times like a pitcher about to throw, but rather than chucking it at her, he slowly brought it over and dropped it into her hands. "We've got 13% off pumpkin spice lattes and warm apple cider. Aaaand there's a 2-for-6.66$ deal on regular coffee. Can I interest ya in anything?"

Pink Phantom
The bell rang again as another guest came in. There was something familiar about this one...hadn't he seen her on someone's reels the other day? She had some sort of superhero name. The pink...pink something, if memory served. Granted, this was Halloween, so maybe it was someone dressed up as her.

He scooped fallen candies back into the bowl, then recited the line correctly this time, "Welcome to Puppettino's, come get your Halloween candy, no strings attached!" At her greeting, he gasped and fanned himself. "Stopppp you'll make me blush! Here ya go, Pink! Happy Halloween!" Francis pawed at the bowl and somehow managed to pull out pink starbursts, which he held out to her.
Charlet (played by Tater)

The ringing of a door opened yet again was heard from the entrance of this shop, but what stood in front wss a confusing entanglement of art and horror, an artists apron and pencils on a strange bone like horn to the head of someone that's hard to separate their oddly red head from the costume, like if Elmo tried dressing up as Picasso for Halloween.

Albeit strange, the person walked over looking joyous through the one eye not covered by a horn and admired both the decorations and fitting costume on the puppetista that stands(?) before her, giving a quick bow as an entrance and greeting. She doesn't seem to have anything along the lines of a nose or mouth either, so it's all she can really do as a greeting other than an informal wave of the hand.

She took a gander around, thinking of what she'd like, before jotting down on a sticky note from a large pad of them clipped to her apron, "𝓦𝓱𝓪𝓽 𝓶𝓲𝓰𝓱𝓽 𝔂𝓸𝓾 𝓱𝓪𝓿𝓮 𝔀𝓲𝓽𝓱 𝓬𝓲𝓷𝓷𝓪𝓶𝓸𝓷 𝓲𝓷 𝓲𝓽?" and politely handing it over to Francis.
Eris Blaise (played by jennaisante)

No strings attached, right? Eris scanned the scene. Yeah, the Puppet moved on its own! She couldn't spot the puppeteer anywhere. Yeah, yeah. That joke hit her funny. The counter stood tall and almost chest-high for her forcing her to lean in close. When the Puppet handed her a pink Starburst candy, Eris snatched it up with a grin. "Thanks! Hey, what's that behind your ear?" She reached toward the back of Francis's head while her fingers light and quick.

Now, flick aaaaand swish!

Whoosh!

Out popped a rose stem from thin air. Eris acted like she tugged it straight from nothing and her eyes wide with surprise. "Wow! A rose just for you." She let out a bubbly giggle and passed the flower to the Puppet. Its petals looked fresh and red.

"Now, I'll take a latte before I head out. That okay?" Her smile beamed bright. If Francis punched in her order fast, she would step aside because another customer rolled in. Some odd person or creature, hard to tell. The place buzzed with that mix of folks because it was Halloween.

Eris bowed low to her all polite and sly. She pulled her trick again. This time snagging a wallet from the air and flipping it toward Charlet. "Hey, is this yours? Watch it next time." A naughty smile tugged at her lips as she handed it over. Truth was, she didn't just spot it on the floor. Her sleight-of-hand magic made it vanish and reappear, right on cue.

Charlet
Oho, yet another new guest! "Welcome to Puppettino's, come get your Halloween candy, no strings attached!" But rather than being met with an answer, he was met with silence, and someone whose disguise seemed almost impossible. Where, in that tangle pieces and strings, could a body actually fit? Maybe this person was a puppet, too? Maybe someone coming to hand in their application? Francis tapped a hand to his chin pensively.

His hand pawed at the note and brought it to his big, googly eyes. "HMMM cinnamon? I don't think any of the candy is cinnamon, but if you wanna open one, I can sprinkle cinnamon powder on it and you can pretend. Otherwise, I could whip you up cinnamon apple cider, a nice fall latte, or pop a cinnamon stick in some nice hot coco. What's yer fancy?"

Pink Phantom
"Of course, Pink. Happy to spread Halloween cheer!" His ear twitched, but before he could move his head to try and look, she pulled a bona fide magic trick on him! His mouth opened wide and a gasp escaped it. "WOAH!" His arm shot in the air and began to wiggle happily, followed shortly by his second arm. CELEBRATION. "That's- that's amazing! Thank you!" His main arm reached for the rose while the other went limp. He brought it to his face and made a sound as though he were inhaling.

"Ooooo fragrant. I love it!"

Francis had never gotten a gift before, and gosh darn it, he was going to cherish it.

"One latte, coming up." He punched her order into the register, then flew down the counter at a comical speed and started thrashing around in front of the latte machine. It looked ridiculous, and very much like it shouldn't work, but somehow, while Pink was doing magic tricks on Charlet, he did indeed manage the feat. Soon, he placed the latte in front of her. Would've loved to pull it out from behind her ear, but that was beyond his abilities.
Charlet (played by Tater)

Charlet thought to herself for a moment before taking off another sticky note and writing down "𝓣𝓱𝓮 𝓬𝓲𝓭𝓮𝓻, 𝓹𝓵𝓮𝓪𝓼𝓮." and handing that over to Francis as well. As she did, she thought to herself why she went out of her way to obtain a beverage she knows she can't even consume without a mouth, but she shrugs it off, sure she'll find a way.

Charlet adjusted the apron part of her art costume, still admiring the decorations around the place before it finally rendered in her mind that Francis was a puppet, eventually looking more confused than a second ago as to how he's acting so life like, not knowing there's a puppeteer below the obviously tall counters.

**Charlet**
After handing off the drink to Pink, he scooted back over to Charlet and picked up the note. "One cinnamon-apple cider coming right up!" He turned on his heels and headed to what looked like an industrial soup dispenser. Francis's head went a little limp while his puppeteer shifted around so he could use both his hands to open the lid, stir the contents around with a long metal kitchen dipper, and then scoop a few large spoonfuls into a glass. He topped it off with a thin slice of candied orange before his head back back into action. He returned to Charlet and set the drink in front of her. "Careful, it's hot."
Charlet (played by Tater)

Charlet gave a small nod in understanding before carefully taking the glass with her sleeve wrapped around her hand, and went to go seat herself and plot on how she could actually drink the drink. (content warning :star: ) Eventually, she pats down her pockets and carefully takes out an empty syringe, using that and poking it where her maw should be to enjoy the drink itself, injecting it directly into her presumed "mouth".

After her whole ordeal of to drink or not to drink is over, she walks back over and slides a twenty dollar bill onto the counter, having forgotten to ask what the price was and running out of social battery. She gives Francis a wave goodbye and from there on leaves the shop, delighted from her experience.

Charlet

Francis has, stupidly, forgotten to charge for the drink ahead of time, whoops!

The shop having calmed down, he started wiping down the counters like a bartender waiting for a good story. Every so often, he'd peek at Charlet and the peculiar way they were drinking. No judgement; it was Halloween, he figured it was part of the disguise.

Upon payment, he retrieved the change, handed it back, and waved goodbye, "Thank you for coming to Puppettino's! Hope you enjoyed your stay!"
Eris Blaise (played by jennaisante)

The illusionist beamed with joy as the puppet enjoyed her little trick. She had just put on a tiny magic show right there on the flower and the little figure seemed to love it. That made her smile stretched wide across her face.

Francis had handed her the latte moments ago and he turned his focus to Charlet at the counter. Eris didn't really mind one bit. She lifted the cup to her lips and took a slow sip. The sweetness hit her tongue just right and the treat made even better because the puppet had kindly served it up for her. But joyrides end and now came the moment to settle the bill. The young woman set down the cup walked toward the counter after Charlet had stepped away, so she walked over to Francis again. "Hey, how much do I owe for the latte?" she asked, pulling her wallet from her pocket with a casual flick.

She held the wallet in her hand, flipping it open once more.

And once agaaaain~ Poof!

A sudden burst of flame shot out from inside while flickering to dance for a second. "Whoops! Sorry about that," Eris said with a cheeky grin. She waved her hand and the wallet and the flames vanished as quick as they came. The wallet looked fine now, just a bit singed at the edge

Pink Phantom
Francis pitter-footed up and down the long counter, washing up more than the mess he'd made, eyeing his bowl of candy every so often with near feral hunger. Had to distract himself from the yummies one way or another.

When Pink approached, he came to a stop and replied, "4.51$ please!" His eyes then lit up - literally, yknow, on account of them being reflective and the fire being a source of light - at the sight of the flame. His jaw dropped, he squealed, and then thrashed around with excitement. "MAGEEEEEK!" Halloween truly was a delightful time of year.

That said, Morp hidden somewhere out of view was very relieved the flame didn't get too close to Francis. Puppet fur was very flammable.
Eris Blaise (played by jennaisante)

That reaction. That spark. Eris loved that when she revealed her little magic trick and it would surprise them. It made her felt alive. Magic had shaped her world from the start. Pulling off illusions in busy spots like this coffee shop still thrilled her. Pulled out a crisp five-dollar bill, the next she would hand it straight to the puppet. "Don't worry," she said with a sly grin. "The money is real." She winked. After paid for her latte, the woman dipped her head in a quick bow.

"Happy Halloween to you!" she added. "What a blast this has been!"

If Francis checked later, they'd spot a single card on the counter. An ace of hearts, scrawled in neat ink: "Lucky you." the Pink Phantom had vanished then quick as a gust of wind.

Pink Phantom

The green puppetman squawked happily. Honestly, the magic show would've been payment enough, but he had a hungry register to fill. "Thank ya kindly. Please come again!" Speaking of the register, it had giant eyes and a cartoony tongue coming out of it. When it opened, it made a "MMMMM" sound as though it had just been fed. He collected the change and handed it back to his pink patron.

He eventually found the card and excitedly pocketed it in his apron, planning on framing it later. Hopefully Morp wouldn't mind if he borrowed one of his frames.

"Lovely," Bastrina chuckled, letting the amusement she felt spread across her face. "'Bats,' I like it. Thanks, 'Cyan!' Haha, I'll take an apple cider to go, and any decorating tips you might have for me. I love what you've done with the place." She looked around, pulling out a cheerfully bestickered brown thermos cup from the deep pockets of her apron.

"One apple cider t'go - oh! And you got your own cup? Perfect, there's an extra dollar off for that." He grabbed the thermos, which nearly slipped out of his soft puppet-y hands, but managed to catch it with his mouth. At a normal coffee shop with normal human baristas, one probably wouldn't find it very sanitary for someone to catch their cup with their face, but Francis was clean!

He flew over to the cider soup containers and filled the thermos up to the brim before returning to his customer, "Here ya go. That'll be an even 3$ please. As for the decorations...thanks! I just wandered around the local haunted mansion and copied what I saw. Minus the blood-soaked ghost begging me to stay with her for all eternity."

Respecting the incentive, Bastrina nodded very happily at the discount, and then listened to the puppet's advice. "Thank you! The scariest part of Halloween is the... consumerism!" Laughing at her own joke, Bastrina snorted and wiped the tears from her eyes. "It's good to know you, uh, source your design locally! Not the ideak first date for me, the haunting and all that.... but we all have different tastes! Haha. Thank you for the service! you certainly have fantastic performance flair, it's great for the atmosphere! Not an art I've mastered so well myself. Maybe someday I'll be a show-baker."
Wheezing with keeping back a laugh again, Bastrina tipped the barista her change and a handful of small bills, and wished him a cheerful "happy Halloween!" Before she jingled out of the shop. Whether it was magic in the chocolate, or just the holiday cheer of someone who was truly dedicated to their craft, she seemed to be in a weightless good mood.

((Happy Halloween!))

Francis punched the air, "Down with consumerism, up with costumerism! Or, well, maybe a bit of consumerism is okay, yknow, otherwise 'ol Francis here would be out of the job." He cupped a hand to his furry chin and leaned forward, examining his guest. "On the contrary; haunted houses are the perfect date spot. Makes it real easy to cuddle up with someone without feeling guilty about it. Just pretend you're afraid of the chainsaw-wielding demon running at you full tilt. I mean, sure, maaaaaaaybe your date'll get cut in two, but at least you got to hold hands on the first date!"

He rolled his hand and gave her a silly salute, "Well thank you for being a captive audience! I hope to see you in future cooking competitions. I'll be cheering ya on. Happy Halloween!" As she headed out, he waved her goodbye, and as soon as he was alone again, he oogled the candy bowl.

No witnesses... Just one candy couldn't hurt...

(Thanks! Happy Halloween to you too.)
