The Doctor (played anonymously)

One day, no matter where you happen to be, you spot something you've never seen before and immediately notice is completely out of place: A blue police box.

The dark blue box is about 10 feet (or 3 meters) tall resembling a phone booth from the planet Earth in the mid-20th century and has the words "Police Box" inscribed along the top on each side in white lettering (assuming your character is literate). Each side has a pair of windows divided into panes at the top underneath the lettering and a light on the center of the roof. In the unlikely event your character is tall enough (or has the ability to fly or levitate) to look in the high windows, they find they are solid white and it is impossible to see inside although they are lit up from an interior source. There is a small, white notice on the door that reads: "Free for Use of Public," "Advice & Assistance," "Officers & Cars Respond to Urgent Calls" and "Pull To Open".

Before your character has a chance to open it, an explosion is heard inside. The doors burst open a few seconds later and a disheveled looking, wild-eyed man with slicked back hair and a slightly tattered suit steps out followed by a cloud of smoke. He coughs and hacks for several moments and then locks eyes with you. "Hey, yoouse," he says gruffly, pointing in your direction.

Where the police box is seen is entirely up to you and what is appropriate to your character's setting. That may be inside a space station, below deck on a pirate ship, suburban backyard, the middle of a park, a clearing in the woods, etc. Please choose and describe the setting where you encounter the police box in your opening post according to what makes sense to your character along with what they were doing prior to spotting it.

OOC guidelines (read in full before posting):

Please read the 'Meet Cute' event description before replying if you have not or don't know what this event is about. A meet cute RP is specifically between exactly 2 people (1x1) . Any kind of character from any genre and any experience level and aged writer is welcome. Someone with at least minimum knowledge of the series "Doctor Who" is strongly preferred.

It is understood that if you join, your character will investigate The Police Box and approach The Doctor when he emerges. Since this is a special event with a time limit, there isn't time for you to play hard to get. If you have no intention of interacting, or that is not something your character would do, or you aren't sure you have the available bandwidth to participate for the duration of the Meet Cute event, then please... don't. That will allow someone else who does to utilize this opportunity.

Please do not jump in or ask if you can be part of the RP once someone responds. First come, first served.
The thread will be marked "closed" at my earliest convenience after getting a reply to remove it from the active event list indicating no new players will be accepted. If the above sounds good and no one else has replied, write your reply below. It's okay to make a quick post to 'hold' the spot and then edit your post later so you don't have to throw something together on the spot. Happy to do a little planning via direct message, but we'll play here in this thread.

Notes and other stuff:

I am an adult and live in the US Central time zone. This incarnation of The Doctor is not canon to the series.
Ace of Spades (played by Emburr)

She wasn't sure how long she had been running, exactly. It felt like hours, but she figured it was only few minutes. A cackle escaped her as she ran through the winding asphalt roads, passing by monolithic buildings. Only once she felt she was far away from him, she slowed down to a stop to catch her breath. Not that it took up much of her stamina, anyway.

Anya straightened up, rolling her shoulders as she took a quick look around. She was standing in a desolated cityscape of monolithic buildings, resembling the style of modern urban East. Judging from some distorted and mixed architecture of the buildings, she could safely assume that she had ran a little too far from her initial entrance point. No sign of the knight, either. Finally, some peace and freedom at last.

"Concrete Jungle," she murmured aloud to no one but herself. Threat Index: Class 2e - Environmental; Safe, Unstable, Devoid of Life. "Not that I'm complaining. Now, time to find the exit from this Level- Branch- err, whatever..."

With that, she began to wander around. Her eyes watched the empty roads. Traffic lights were present on the street corners, though it displayed erratic, strobe-like lights, lacking any clear pattern in their sequences.

"Hmh... now, what kind of exits does this Branch have, again?" Anya spoke again, hands clasped behind her as she walked. "Alley streets may connect to a long dirt road, eventually leading to The Bumper Crop. Exceedingly cramped areas may transport one to The Matrix Branch, which- on second thought, I'll scratch that one off the list." At the far distance, something caught her eye. Anya squinted hard as if that would help her identify the object. Was there something on the fork of the road?

"Removing a manhole cover and descending downward may lead to Pipe Dreams." She continued to list her options, picking up her pace. "Particularly worn and decrepit city blocks leads to Indigencs... Not a good place either, scratching that one off the list."

"And large, empty highways may lead to Roads to Abyss!" Anya placed her hands on her hip as she stopped right in front of the blue box structure. The sight made her furrow her eyebrows, tilting her head in slight confusion. She didn't recall this place having a phone booth; the Concrete Jungle should be empty, no furniture nor any other structure.

"Huh. Has this always been here?" She questioned aloud, circling the phone booth, stopping right in front of the door. It looked like one, as far as she could tell. "'Police Box'? Free for use of public? Pull to open??"

It was, no doubt, very out of place. As far as she's concerned, there were no phone boxes in this place. Unless it was made by someone, she doubted it had spawned naturally.

With that in mind, Anya pursed her lips, crossing her arms as she drummed her fingers in thought. "Well! As they say, 'Curiosity killed the cat'!"

Just as she was about to reach out and pull the handle, the sound of an explosion made her flinch, retracting her hand back to her side as she quickly distanced herself away from the booth. Though she half-expected something would come out the door, Anya yelped when the wide-eyed man stepped out, a cloud of smoke seeping through.

Anya quickly went into a defensive stance, raising a hand to conjure a few numbered cards hovering over her palm. Her cape-like wings unfolded wide in an instinctive attempt to make herself look bigger.

The man looked... human, at least? She gave him a suspicious squint, cleared her throat, and straightened up. She patted her clothes and quickly folded her wings back, which looked more like a cape now.

"Why, hello there~!" She greeted enthusiastically. It was almost like someone flipped a switch with how fast her demeanor changed. "My, my, what do we have here? I certainly wasn't expecting that. A Wanderer, perhaps? Just who might you be, hm?"

The Doctor and Yoo-nit had just dropped off the kidnapped CEO of some large space corporation at his intergalactic corporate headquarters after a daring prison break. "One down, one to go, kiddo," The Doctor told the toaster-like droid plugged into the TARDIS's main console. "Let's make with the dematerializin' and vamoose!"

There was a whooshing noise and the blue police box slowly disappeared from the building's lobby leaving behind a dazed, blue skinned alien in an expensive business suit. In the blink of an eye, the blue police box reappeared elsewhere.

Earlier, they had raided a space prison on a distant planetoid, a small artificial planet. The Doctor had found one of the two beings he was tasked with rescuing, and was now on his way back to retrieve the other. As the TARDIS rematerialized, the little droid operating the ship's controls began making a series of beeps and whirs. The red light above its eyes blinked, the metal flag on its shoulder bobbed up and down and it belched out a cloud of white smoke that smelled oddly of burned toast. The cloud engulfed the control room and there was a loud bang, sounding like a small explosion.

The Doctor stumbled out of the TARDIS, coughing and hacking. It took him a moment for the cloud to dissipate enough for him to breath and get a look around. The first thing that caught his eye was a female humanoid around 5 feet tall with piercing green eyes. Instinctively, he pointed in her direction and said, "Hey, yoouse!"

The woman quickly went into a defensive stance, raising a hand to conjure a few numbered cards hovering over her palm. Her cape-like wings unfolded wide in an instinctive attempt to make herself look bigger.

"Whoa! Hold on their batgirl! Don't shoot," The man pleaded, raising his arm defensively in front of his face to shield himself. "I come in peace! Uh, nanu, nanu... and such!" He lowered his arm and made what appeared to be a Vulcan peace sign when she didn't immediately attack. The woman seemed to relax her stance and her wings retracted. She cleared her throat and squinted at him.

"Why, hello there~!" She greeted enthusiastically. It was almost like someone flipped a switch with how fast her demeanor changed. "My, my, what do we have here? I certainly wasn't expecting that. A Wanderer, perhaps? Just who might you be, hm?"

"Jeepers, creepers, where'd you get them peepers," The Doctor returned. Besides the wing-like cape, the first thing that he noticed were her unusual, striking eyes. He stood there dumb struck for a moment before adding. "Are you a space angel? I'm called The Doctor. First name, 'The', last name 'Doctor', but you can call me 'Doc' and I can call you beeyoooouuuuteeeeful! So, what's a nice goil like you doin' in a place like dis?"

The Doctor looked around. The environment resembled the planetoid from which he'd come earlier and therefore had no reason to suspect that he'd actually arrived in the wrong place.
Ace of Spades (played by Emburr)

"Batgirl?" Anya repeated slowly, the enthusiasm as well faltered just as the corner of her eye twitched. Bat girl??? It seemed that she had taken it as an offense, evident from how her expression slowly changed into that if a pissed off look; furrowed eyebrows, narrowed eyes, the corners of her mouth tugged downturned just slightly.

"Well I'll have you know that I am anything but a bat! Do I look like a batgirl to you?" She crossed her arms with an huff, glaring dagger at the man, making it clear that she was, indeed, pissed off. Anyone who knew her would know it wasn't genuine anger, she just had a knack of dramatizing and exaggerating things. "I am butterfly-adjacent, if you will. It is, in fact, my whole theme... among other things. Remember that! Hmph!"

The annoyance didn't last long, as her expression turned to a faux haughty look while she shifted her weight on one foot, sobering up from her act before. Jeepers, creepers, where'd you get them peepers? The rhyme sounded a little familiar; isn't it a song?

"Well, I'm flattered~! I suppose I'll call you Doc, then. And- ah, where are my manners?" Anya took off her top hat and curtsied gracefully. When she straightened up, she offered a grin to the man. "Salutations~! I am none other than The Architect! What kind of architect, you may ask?" She paused for a moment, then gave a halfhearted shrug. "Certainly not buildings. In fact, I was thinking about changing that title, but oh well... the big guys wouldn't like that at all."

Anya cleared her throat when she realized she was getting off track. "Though I mostly go by Ace, Ace of Spades. It's a pleasure to meet you~!"

As she returned her hat back to her head, she took the time to study the man and the robot. The Doctor, as he called himself- a strange name, assuming it's not a title. As far as she could tell, he looked just like an ordinary man, albeit with wide eyes. Though looks may be deceiving, that much is clear. Anya tilted her head when he looked around.

"Ah, you're in the Concrete Jungle." She informed, raising a finger. "Assuming you don't know, of course. Devoid of life, unstable nature... but on the bright side, it's a safe place. No entities nor anomalies that would want you dead here. It is rather barren, so I advice you to leave and move on to the next... err, Level or Expanse."

Though something gnawed on the back of her mind. He came from the phone box, no? Anya sneaked a glance at the dark blue object behind The Doctor, staring with a questioning look. If it was an anomaly, she could just go ahead and 'fix' it up... somehow. The explosion she heard from before likely would've busted it up, but... it looked like it was still intact? And why did the man appear unharmed when he would've been blown to bits from the closed off space?

"Odd way of no-clipping here, hm?" She commented, trying to gauge more information out of him. Is he a wanderer? A 'local'? "I can't recall a phone box existing here, in the Concrete Jungle." She planted her hand on her hip, looking up. "How strange."

"No respect, I tell yas," The Doctor muttered under his breath when his new found companion took offense at being called 'Batgirl' and went off on him. Her tune quickly changed, however, when he complimented her eyes.

"Well, I'm flattered~! I suppose I'll call you Doc, then. And- ah, where are my manners?" Anya took off her top hat and curtsied gracefully. When she straightened up, she offered a grin to the man. "Hey," The Doctor replied, eyes lighting up. "Well Whaddya know? We have the same first name! And what kind of doctor am I? Certainly not a medical one!"

Anya cleared her throat when she realized she was getting off track. "Though I mostly go by Ace, Ace of Spades. It's a pleasure to meet you~!"

"Small universe! There was this kid that usda travel with me. Ace, she called herself." The Doctor explained, reminiscing. "She was a bright one I tell yas. Had a knack for blowin' things up. Kaboom! Her real name was Dorthey. Used to call me 'The Professor'. But anyways, Ace #2, you can call me whatever ya want, just don't call me late to supper!" He let out a chuckle at his own bad and very trite joke.

As she returned her hat back to her head, she took the time to study the man and the robot. The Doctor, as he called himself- a strange name, assuming it's not a title. "Is that what they call it," He mused. "Well, whaddya know? It sounds like I'm in the right place then! That lil' toaster got it right! Whodda thunk it? This place certainly matches the description." The planetoid The Doctor was looking for was hallow on the inside. According to what Yoo-nit had been able to learn from some files it downloaded in the prison, the damsel in question might have gone into the city in the core.

"Well, it didn't," The Doctor explained. "That's how I got here. Ya see, I'm looking for this dame. She's about your size, long dark hair, blue eyes wearin' a dress that blinks like a bill board in Vegas... the planet, not the city on Earth. Ya wouldn't have happened to see anyone fittin' that particular description, would yas? Also, I could really use a drink. I don't spose there is any place for a guy to get some booze?
Ace of Spades (played by Emburr)

"Not a medical one?" Anya questioned aloud, "Likely a scientist kind of doctor, then. Intriguing either way, nonetheless..

When the Doctor mentioned about another person with the nickname Ace, Anya let out a short laugh. "I'll say she's got a good taste in names!"

"Oh." She blinked, tilting her head to the side. "You're new here, are you not? And you-"

Her eyes widened upon realization, suppressing her own mind screaming at her to ask what the man was talking about. Though it only raised more questions, she could piece what little information she got to create a bigger picture. Oh. He didn't enter this place as how other wanderers did, via falling out no-clipping out of reality, but with some sort of device, most likely the phone box. A teleporter device, perhaps? Can they- are they allowed to do that?

"Huh." Anya said coolly, nodding to his words, her face the epitome of calm. "That is neat. Cool, cool."

"I haven't met anyone with that description, no." She shook her head, her expression rather apologetic. Still, she offered him a smile. "It's hard to find someone in a place like this... or, well, in the Inbetween in general, I suppose. There's hundreds if not thousands of levels here, so you might have a... very rough time finding her."

If she didn't... well, die before they find her, Anya mentally added. She'll have to address that soon, and she hoped whoever this woman he's looking for would still be alive.

"Anywho..." She cleared her throat, clasping her hands together with a clap. "I don't suppose there's a place like that, not anywhere near, at least." She hummed. "Some colonies might offer drinks, but you need something to barter them with. Err,

A lightbulb went off in her head. Her face visibly lit up at the idea- if she were to travel with someone, disguised her appearance, it would give her some sort of cover. Claudius wouldn't expect that! Though he may come to realize it at some point, but at the very least it'll buy her extra time of freedom.

"Mm, how about this; I help you find your missing friend, and you let me come with you as your travel companion?" She suggester with a broad grin. "If you'd prefer to travel alone, however, I would not mind"

"Yeah, like the sciency kind," The Doctor agreed with a nod.

When the Doctor mentioned about another person with the nickname Ace, Anya let out a short laugh. "I'll say she's got a good taste in names!"

The new Ace went on to explain about where they were and referred to it as 'The concrete jungle.'

"Is that what they call it," He mused. "Well, whaddya know? It sounds like I'm in the right place then! That lil' toaster got it right! Whodda thunk it? This place certainly matches the description."

"Oh." She blinked, tilting her head to the side. "You're new here, are you not? And you-"

"Yup," The Doctor replied without hesitation. "I sprang this corporate big wig from the clink. The other one, she call's herself 'The Operator'- huh, we sure have a lot of 'Thes' come to think of it..." The Doctor paused to process that he was The Doctor, he was with The Architect and was looking for 'The Operator'. When he went on to describe her, Anya confirmed she'd not seen her.

"I haven't met anyone with that description, no." She shook her head, her expression rather apologetic. Still, she offered him a smile. "It's hard to find someone in a place like this... or, well, in the Inbetween in general, I suppose. "Oh sheesh," The Doctor replied. "That's not promisin'. Sounds like I'm lookin' for a needle in a haystack!"

If she didn't... well, die before they find her, Anya mentally added. She'll have to address that soon, and she hoped whoever this woman he's looking for would still be alive.

"Well, I 'spose. Besides that tin can pretendin' to be a super computer in there, I ain't got nobodys else," The Doctor mused. He wouldn't call Zizz the CEO a companion. It had been awhile since he'd had a long term lady friend with him to explore the galaxy. "I also gotta return the little fella once I find this dame. He belongs to her. Tell ya what, toots! This is yer lucky day! Ya got yourself a deal. Now where do we start?"
Ace of Spades (played by Emburr)

"Lots of 'Thes', yup. Speaking of which, you'd be surprised at how many of my... mm, colleagues have 'The' as their 'first name'." Anya mused, snickering at the thought she found to be funny.

"We can start now, of course!" She beamed, clasping her hands behind her back. Next thing she needed to do is a disguise; altering her appearance wouldn't be too hard. "One moment."

Anya walked a couple steps backward and snapped her fingers when she stopped. What looked like a Zig Zag Girl box folded into existence and began to cover her. It didn't take long until the door flew open with a kick.

Anya walked out with a slightly altered appearance. Most of her features were still the same, but her face were altered just slightly to pass of as someone else, along with brown eyes instead of her usual green ones with those spade-shaped pupils. Another thing was her clothes; she now wore a coat over a black turtleneck sweater. Her brushed down antennas were gone too, as well as her wings disguised as cape. A backpack slung over her shoulder, specifically a continental rucksack. She kicked the box and it shrinked to the ground, nowhere to be seen.

"Now we can go!" She grinned, a hand placed on her hip. "You might want a bag of your own too. To store supplies and everything." Anya suggested. As if she remembered something, she tilted her chin at the phone box. "Your fella inside, would it be alright to leave him? It might take a while to return back to where we started."
The Doctor (played anonymously) Topic Starter

"Small world," He remarked.

The Doctor's newest companion asked for a moment before they set off. She conjured up a zig-zag girl box, the kind that created an illusion that the person, usually a dame, was placed inside, sawed into pieces and the middle piece was shifted to give the impression the victim had been dismembered but was alive. By now, he had figured out Ace had a stage magic motif. Perhaps 'The Magician' would fit her better.

"I bet that's bigger on the Inside, like mine," He remarked cryptically in reference to the box. When she emerged, she looked different.

"I can do that, too," The Doctor explained. "But usually only when I'm about to kick the bucket. Problem is, ya just never know whatcha's gonna get after." He was referring to his ability to regenerate into a new body if he became mortally injured. He thought briefly back to his 5th incarnation when he was blonde. He never cared for that body much and his regeneration had gone awry leaving him sickly. Regeneration was a big deal and not something a timelord did as a party trick.

"Now we can go!" She grinned, a hand placed on her hip. "You might want a bag of your own too. To store supplies and everything." Anya suggested. As if she remembered something, she tilted her chin at the phone box.

"Hang on," The Doctor instructed. "Back in a tick!" He disappeared into his own box for a moment. He came out in the same clothes still looking like a seedy carnie or hobo only now he had a sack hanging on the end of a stick which he slung over his shoulder. It was the sort of look one might expect from a drifter back in the early 20th century on the planet Earth, hitching rides inside of railroad freight cars to unknown destinations.

"Your fella inside, would it be alright to leave him? It might take a while to return back to where we started."

"Oh you mean R2-D2 in there? Yeah, he'll be fine," The Doctor assured her. "Someone's gotta hold down the fort. That sorry excuse for a toaster oven isn't much of a computer and would only slow us down. Back in the day, I had this robot mutt, K9 I called 'em. Now that was a computer, I tell yas! But enough of my yackin'. Let's get this show on the road! Boda Bing, Boda boom! We're off to see the Wizard! Lead on, m'lady!"
Ace of Spades (played by Emburr)

"Oh-" Anya blinked. He could change his appearance when he's- well, dead? "Something like reincarnation, I assume?"

Then The Doctor told her to hold on and wait. Anya gave him a nod and a thumbs up and stood idly outside. As she waited, she rocked on her heels and tapped her foot. The phone box must be some kind of Though, now that she thought about it, the concept sounded familiar. Phone box, 'bigger on the inside', strange man inside. Eh. She shrugged to herself. Probably nothing important. She likely watched something with similar concepts, before she got into this hellhole.

When The Doctor came out, Anya blinked at the sight. Interesting choice of outfit and 'bag', but she wasn't one to judge!

"Mm, okay. If you say so. Now, onwards~!" She hummed in a slight singsong voice. With a hop and a skip, she began to walk down the road behind the dark blue phone box, beckoning The Doctor to follow her along.

"Oh! And first thing's first, don't call me Ace. Not when I'm in my flawless disguise." She informed, grinning at her own exaggerated statement. "I'd prefer if you'd call me... uh..."

Anya thought hard, snapping her fingers as she tried to come up with a good name. Certainly not her real one. She'd only just met him, anyway. "Anna! Call me that instead."

Ah yes, very clever of her. What a genius. No one would suspect a thing. Claudius wouldn't suspect a thing.

"Okay. I'll be addressing an issue here," Anya spoke, clearing her throat before she continued. "With every second we waste here, your friend's chance of surviving is dwindling fast. Unless she somehow comes across a colony who'd gladly take her in. Or in a safe level. Aside from those? Everything's gonna come out to get her. Well, anyone, really. And it depends on which place you're in..."

She pursed her lips. If something does happen to this friend of his, well... she could always pay Mortis a visit, though she doubted he'd bring her back to life for no good reason.

It was still a desolate place. There was nothing else around other than monolithic buildings. Some of its architectural designs were modern urban, some even resembling a modern skyscraper, but as one explored further, the designs of the buildings began to vary. Winding asphalt roads stretched as far as the eyes could see, with the occasional fork in the road, dividing the masses of empty structures into unclear sections.

The cityscape looked haphazardly constructed, seemingly expanded upon with little regard for aesthetics, uniformity, or habitability. The sound of metallic creaks and groans could be heard, likely from the steady degradation from the infrastructure of the roads and buildings.

The sounds made an uneasy ambience, but she preferred this over unsafe, hazardous levels.

"Now, then! Before I start yapping about the exits," She began, picking up her pace to walk ahead of him before turning around and walking backwards. "I need to know where, exactly, you last saw your friend. Describe the place, if you could. That way, we could narrow some stuff down a bit, guess which level your friend would end up in."

"But lucky for us, this place's safe! No life whatsoever. Search here would be relatively easy." Anya informed lightly. "Bad news? No life whatsoever. No colonies or outposts either. But hey, on the brightside, we wouldn't have to worry about encountering a skinstealer, hound, or whatever messed up thing that would generally roam a level."

Her voice faotered slightly at the end when she realized something. She hissed through her teeth, slow and uneasy. Anya turned her head over to The Doctor, gesturing to his sack. "Hey, Doc. You wouldn't happen to have a weapon in there by any chance, no?"

"Oh-" Anya blinked. He could change his appearance when he's- well, dead? "Something like reincarnation, I assume?"

"That's right kiddo! What you said," The Doctor responded. "Or um, something like dat anyways..."

"Mm, okay. If you say so. Now, onwards~!" She hummed in a slight singsong voice. With a hop and a skip, she began to walk down the road behind the dark blue phone box, beckoning The Doctor to follow her along.

"Sheesh, I outta change MY name to Dorthy... I feel like I'm followin' a yellow brick road that ain't yellow, I tell yas...," The Doctor commented.

"You got it, Anna," The Doctor agreed. "I figure I should have an alias, too. How about... uhhhh The Wizard? Wait, no. That ain't right. That's more your thing and he'd be the fella we was lookin' for. The lion? Nope. I ain't no overgrown pussy cat!"

If he was going with the Oz motif, that left the tinman or scarecrow. The scarecrow had more of a ring to it and fit his hobo-like appearance. "Just call me Scarecrow," he finally offered. That implied he didn't have a brain, but he'd let Anna here do all the talkin' and strategizin' since she seemed to know what she was doin.'

"Oh, sheesh! That don't sound good," The Doctor stated. "Let's make with the search partyin' then, pronto!"

"Now, then! Before I start yapping about the exits," She began, picking up her pace to walk ahead of him before turning around and walking backwards. "I need to know where, exactly, you last saw your friend. Describe the place, if you could. That way, we could narrow some stuff down a bit, guess which level your friend would end up in."

"So, lemme think a minute," The Doctor requested, gathering his thoughts. He and the toaster and talkin' boid had figured out where the girl and the CEO were. The CEO wouldn't shut his yap, so The Doc had taken him back to where he belong first. He'd lost the boid. in the process. He probably should mention he was looking for him, too.

"Well, it's like dis," The Doctor, or Scarecrow began. "She was in the clink, but not like the small-town local sort. It was huge, I tell yas... like a massive prison. One of them Imperial joints where they hold all sorts of colorful characters. It was on the surface... the top level. Ya could see the sky! Lots of open land from what I seen."

"Hey, Doc. You wouldn't happen to have a weapon in there by any chance, no?"

"Unless yas call a yappy toaster that explodes constantly a weapon," The Doctor replied. "Then that's a big fat nope! But you already said we needed to leave 'em with the TARDIS. You're just stuck with my quick wit and charmin' personality!"

He paused. "Oh! And one more thing I almost forgot. The thing is, see, there was this giant talkin' boid. He was with me when we went lookin' for this dame," The Doctor explained. "Looked like a big black crow, about your size. We need to keep an eye out for him, too! But enough with the small talk! As you said, time is a wastin'!"
Ace of Spades (played by Emburr)

"Ohoho, Wizard of Oz motifs, eh? What an impeccable taste you have. Respect." Anya let out a pleasant laugh. It has been a while since she last heard of that tale. "I should consider changing my title to The Witch, but that doesn't fit me at all, nope. I think I'll just stick to what I have."

"No weapons? Mm.. oh, well. That's alright!" Anya grinned and pumped her fist. It would be rather foolish to wander around with no weapons, but it's nothing she can't handle. Plus, she brought a swiss knife or two with her, just in case!

She waved her hand casually, slowly down her pace as she stepped aside, opting to walk beside The Doctor. TARDIS was the name of the phone box, she assumed.

"Besides, I can fight just fine for the both of us! So there's nothing to worry about~!" She gave him a toothy grin and a thumbs up.

The explanation that came after was rather confusing. To her, at least. It didn't offer her much details, but she could assume that it's likely a prison, which he stated it himself. is that there are only three known levels that resembled a prison.

"Sounds to me you're talking about the Saint Lawrence Sanitarium level. Prison, wide open sky.." Anya spoke, humming in thought, taking a left turn when they reached a fork in the road. "It'll take a while to get there... and there's little entrance too. Fastest way is to find a manhole cover which would take us to Pipe Dreams, and once we get there, we'll have to search for a fire exit. That would either take us to the Habitable Zone, The Electrical Station, or The Non-Circadian Hotel. We'll want to find the door that leads to the first one. And while we're at it, we'll stock up on supplies like food and water. After that, we'll wander around until we find a Transition Zone which would take us to Media Nocte. We'll get to the Saint Lawrence Sanitarium there."

"So! Any questions?"

"Sounds to me you're talking about the Saint Lawrence Sanitarium level. Prison, wide open sky.."

"That must be it," The Doctor answered with a shrug. "I didn't catch the name of the joint. It had a roof on it, I think... or at least the part we was in did. It's kinda a long story so I'll give yas the Cliff's note version: We never seen the outside of the place. See, we let ourselves get captured by the bad guys so they'd take us directly where the dame was bein' held. That idea was courtesy of yours truly... okay, I think the giant boid came up wit it, but that ain't important! It was the best idea we had since we had no idea what we was lookin' for or where they took her. Anyway, we got taken in, then busted out, found the first guy we was lookin' fer, got back to the TARDIS and vamoosed. That bucket-o-bolts navigator assured me he could find his way back there. Hopefully, the space crow, who got separated during our daring rescue found the dame and is waitin' for us to give 'em a lift. That leads us here to yoouse. So is dis place far?"

"It'll take a while to get there... and there's little entrance too. The Doctor stood there wide eyed with his mouth opened as 'Anna' rambled through the various locations. It was obvious he was unfamiliar with any of them. "Sheesh, this is soundin' like one of dem game shows." The Doctor replied. "I'll take the habitable zone for 500, Alex! I'm glad ya seem to know where yer goin', kid, cuz I ain't got a clue!"

He continued on beside her.

"So! Any questions?"

"Yeah, what's a nice goil like you doin' in a place like dis," The Doctor asked. "You seems to have been here awhile..."
Ace of Spades (played by Emburr)

Boid... bird? Was he talking about some kind of anthromorphic bird? Anya blinked, tilting her head as she listened without interrupting. Non-human wanderers are uncommon, but they do exist. Intriguing, nonetheless. So first the lady, now the crow. Two people to look for, maybe. She was starting to doubt that they were talking about the same place, but she decided to give him the benefit of the doubt. Better safe than sorry, after all.

"So you gave yourselves up for capture to rescue this lady?" She questioned, kicking a chipped off rock on the road. "That's quite the risk you took! Questionable, but it's not like I'm one to talk, heh."

Most of the things she did were rather... impulsive. She had a knack of taking action without thinking which, as much as she'd hate to admit, was likely one of the many reasons they kept an eye on her. A metaphorical eye in the form of a knight. Speaking of which, she wondered where he was now? Probably looking for her right now. But eh, he'll manage.

"Well, of course I know where I'm going!" Anya puffed up her chest pridefully, grinning widely. "I didn't explore and traverse these places willingly for no reason! It's very handy to know what kind of places you'd potentially end up in, and not to mention that it's like an endless labyrinth out here, some infested with monsters. And- hey! I'm no kid! Do I look like one to you?!"

Her mock irritated expression soon faltered at his question. She blinked at him, then let out a long hum, tapping her chin in thought as she turned her gaze ahead. Manholes, manholes... gotta search if there's one around here. So far there's only buildings, buildings, and more buidlings.

"Me? Oh, well... you know," Anya clasped her hands together, clearing her throat. It was clear to her that 'Scarecrow' was unaware who she is, and she'd very much prefer not to scare him off. She probably should have thought about it before she gave him her 'name', but- oh well... no use crying over spilled milk. It is what it is.

"Ding ding ding! You're correct on that second part; I've been here a very, very long while. Long enough to recognize most of the levels here and be an unofficial guide, haha~!" She answered truthfully. "As for the first part? Well... you could say I was running from something. What exactly am I running from you may ask? Just something unimportant. Better keep it a mysery, don't you think? After all, it would ruin the fun if I I give you the spoiler now."

As her eyes surveyed her surrounding, a flat, circular object lay flat in the distance. Anya's face lit up. A manhole! Now that would take them straught into Pipe Dreams!

"Judging from your get up and act earlier, you look like you'd be quite the little escape artist. Besides, it woiked, didn't it," The Doctor replied. "Well, mostly anyway. For convenience sake, I thought I'd get the one fella out and come back for the rest of 'em, by that I mean the boid and the goil, although that good for nuttin' sardine can missed his mark on the return trip. Sheesh. It's like we had a front-row parkin' spot, lost it, and now we're at the back o' the lot."

'Anna' seemed annoyed when questioned about knowing her way around.

"Well, of course I know where I'm going!" Anya puffed up her chest pridefully, grinning widely. "I didn't explore and traverse these places willingly for no reason! "Geez Louise, lady! How should I know? Looks can be deceiven'. Besides, you don't know how old I am," The Doctor retorted. "And if you did, I dare say I'm at least a coupla hundred years yer senior... but then again, going back to my initial statement, looks CAN be deceiven'."

Which lead the Doc to inquire about how long she'd been here...

"Me? Oh, well... you know,"

He figured she'd been here for awhile...

"Ain't we all," The Doctor muttered. "That's fair." After all, The Doctor had far from told Anna everything about himself.

As her eyes surveyed her surrounding, a flat, circular object lay flat in the distance. Anya's face lit up. A manhole! Now that would take them straught into Pipe Dreams!

The Doctor realized Anna had spotted a manhole cover.

"Huh," He commented. "Yah knows, I once met these karate fight'n terrapins in a place like dis. Led by a giant rodent, no less and co-in-suh-dentally- they was lookin' for a kidnapped dame, too. But that was a different planet. So remind me there, Abracadabra, once we find one of these manholes, where was it we wanted to end up again?"
Ace of Spades (played by Emburr)

"Righty-o! I am quite the escape artist around here." Ace said as she crouched down to try and lift the manhole cover from its place. It'll be quite tricky, but nothing she can't handle. She reched into her bag and pulled out a crowbar, tipping it into the lid's edge to pry it open. While her eyes were focused on the manhole, she kept her ears open and listened as 'Scarecrow' continued to talk. "Should've taken the chance, huh?"

"Oh- centuries years old?" That got her attention. Ace glanced up for a moment before looking down again. "Huh. Well, mind you- I am at least a century old! Maybe even a century and a half, who knows?"

To be honest, she had no idea how old she was exactly. She didn't bother keeping track, also counting the fact that time is a bit weird here and the fact that she wasn't human per se, at least not anymore.

"Oh? That sounds fun." She commented breezily as she successfully took the manhole cover off, pushing it to the side. "I bet it's so much more fun. Sounds to me that you travel a lot, huh? I remember you mentioned about beinb on another planet

It intrigued her by a lot. Most wanderers here mostly came from a boring world on a boring planet called earth. It was likely he came from an advanced world.

"The manhole will lead us straight into a level called Pipe Dreams," she explained. "Once we arrived there, we'll need to keep our eyes open for a fire exit; it's one of the many exit doors in the level, but fire exits will specifically take us to the Habitable Zone~! Or, apparently, Parking Zone. They keep changing the name every few years; Parking Lot, Warehouse, Habitable Zone, Parking Zone- honestly, M.E.G needs to choose one and commit."

"Anyway... Once we get through there, we'll want to find this are called a 'Transition Zone'. It'll take us to Media Nocte. From there on, we'll have to figure out a way to find the exit to Saint Lawrence Sanitarium." Ace explained once more as she lowered herself down the ladder, gesturing for him to come down as well.

Once she reached the end of the ladder, Ace looked down, and dropped down to the ground. Assuming the Doctor climbed down as well, he would feel a shift in the air. If one were to look back up to the open manhole, it would be gone, replaced by a concrete ceiling.

Ace looked around, surveying her surroundings. They were in a vast network of interconnected utility tunnels. The walls were made of concrete, and pipes lined up on the wall, some of which are rusty, blowing off hot steam. It was rather dark, and the lights illuminating the tunnels were dim.

Anna seemed enthusiastic about her task. The Doctor was a bit disappointed when she pulled out an old fashioned crowbar, He thought she'd use some trick to levitate the lid off the hole, but it was effective. "What no magic wand or is that reserved for gettin' the rabbit outta your hat," he teased.

"Oh- centuries years old?" That got her attention. Ace glanced up for a moment before looking down again. "Huh. Well, mind you- I am at least a century old! Maybe even a century and a half, who knows?"

"Like I said-- you can't judge a book by its cover," The Doctor responded with a shrug. "I lost count a couple of centuries ago."

He also casually mentioned he had been to a similar place on another planet, revealing he'd see other worlds many times.

"Oh? That sounds fun." She commented breezily as she successfully took the manhole cover off, pushing it to the side. "I bet it's so much more fun. Sounds to me that you travel a lot, huh? I remember you mentioned about beinb on another planet

"Ya might say I've been around the block a time or two or coupla hundred," The Doctor replied. "What can I say? I'm a travelin' man."

"Pipe dreams, eh? Sounds like an expensive smoke shop," The Doc remarked enthusiastically. "My kinda place! I could use a fine cigar now that ya mention it."

The Doctor just nodded. She seemed to know what she was doing and which way to go.

"And away we go," The Doctor said more to himself as his guide descended into the darkness below. "Down the rabbit hole and onto the nuthouse! Maybe we'll even have tea with the Mad Hatter! Boda Bing, Boda Boom!"

He climbed down the ladder and joined her at what appeared to be a series of dimly lit maintenance tunnels. There was no immediate danger and he let Anna, or maybe he should suggest she call herself Alice, figure out which way their proverbial white rabbit went.
Ace of Spades (played by Emburr)

The tunnel only leads forward for now, and Ace gestured for him to follow her. She started to walk with light steps, and careful enough not to make too much sound. Dripping water could be heard further down, echoing in the tunnel. Ace ducked when there was a broken pipe with steam leaking out.

"Careful," she warned, looking over her shoulder. "Scalding hot steam. Oh, and if you see any liquid, try not to touch it. Or anything, really. Some may have lethal pathogens. So try to avoid direct contact or consumption."

Of course, she trusted that the Doc was smart enough to not do those things, but there's nothing wrong with giving a little warning.

As they walked deeper, they soon came across an intersection. Ace stopped for a moment to think, then ultimately decided to turn left, where the light seemed brighter compared to the rest.

"Soo...." Ace began, breaking the silence. She wasn't exactly a big fan of silence. "Think we'll be here a while. Let me know if you spot any red fire exits."

"Anyway... Tell me more about this dame you're looking for. And the bird fellow you mentioned." Ace inquired, genuinely curious. "And you mentioned that you travelled to a hundred other planets? I could already imagine how fun those past travels were!"

"Soo...." Ace began, breaking the silence. She wasn't exactly a big fan of silence. "Think we'll be here a while. Let me know if you spot any red fire exits."

"Got it! Fire exits, killer puddles of ooze and scalding hot steam," The Doctor repeated. "Anything else? Don't worry, nuttin' gets past these eyeballs!"

"Anyway... Tell me more about this dame you're looking for. And the bird fellow you mentioned." Ace inquired, genuinely curious. "And you mentioned that you travelled to a hundred other planets? I could already imagine how fun those past travels were!"

"Give or take," The Doctor answered with a casual shrug. "Let's see... The Operator. We may or may not have a history, but if we did, that was in another life time. So... it's like dis. She's one of them space tely-phone opa-atas. Ya knows, ya call 'em up and a nice lady answers and ya ask her fer a number yas lookin' fer or if ya dialed it wrong, you may get a message saying 'hey ya dope, that ain't da right number' but uh, ya know, not like that exactly. Anyways, this dame is a real special one of those ladies- ya see, most planets have this number ya can dial and ya get her. She does her little commercial and then tells ya what time it is, the weather and temperature... sheesh, I guess some people can't afford a watch or somethin'."

"So's anyways," The Doctor continued. "This dame, she's a bit of a celebrity, even if it's only in her own mind. Ya talk about full of herself... geez Louise! I may need a second TARDIS just fer her ego! But anyways, Ya see, everyone knows her voice even if they don't know her. They just don't realize it. But gettin' on wit the story-- there was this big political to-do for this loud mouth 2 headed guy that thinks he's king o' the universe or somethin'. He's holdin' this fundraiser cuz you know, these kings and political types have to get themselves re-elected and whatnot and they need money tuh do that. Don't ask me what for-- So the phone company, the one that this dame works for, sponsored this lil' to-do. It was real nice with some real good booze. Pan Galactic Gargleblasters, they called 'em."

"Anywho- That's where I come in. Ya see, there's this place called Eart'. Nice little place... anyways, them terrapins that knew karate with the rat tryin' to save that other kidnapped dame I was tellin' yas about earlier? Same planet. But that ain't important. Anyway, there were these kids from there. Long story on them, but I was helpin' em' out when they forgot their friend's birthday and we stopped off at this thing cuz one of 'em asked me to take 'em on their way back to their timeline. (Editor's note: See here for more info..) That was another version of me, by the way but anywho... long story short... I had this errand to run and when I got back, all hell had broke loose at this party. These thugs took her n' the CEO. That's where I met the boid... the giant space crow. So's anyways, I got those crazy kids from Eart' oudda there and eventually came back to see if I could help out. That's where I got the talkin' toaster. It belongs to her, The Operator, that is. So anyways, I saved the toaster and the boid, we went lookin' for the dame, didn't know where they took her, but one of them ships from the kidnappers found us, so we got ourselves captured. They took us right to dis place, we busted out, found the suit-- that's the big mouth CEO guy, took 'em back to his office and that brings me to yoouse when we came back here lookin' for her and da boid."
Ace of Spades (played by Emburr)

"Hmm.... What else, what else?" Ace drawled out, humming in thought as she thought about what else to let him know of next. "Ah! You see, here in the Inbetween or Backrooms, whatever it is you wanderers call it, exists a diverse supernatural creatures called 'Entities'. They are among the creatures that inhabit this... realm. It entirely depends on which level you're in, though. Some lack aggressive entities, some have fewer ones, others have an abundant amount. Pipe Dreams, though? It has a low entity count, so I suppose we're relatively safe..."

Of course, if push ever comes to shove, Ace is more than willing to defend. She's strong enough to fight for both of them! Besides, taking down these creatures are the norm. For her, at least. Or anyone brave enough to attack one and well equipped with a weapon to defend themselves.

Ace listened closely as the Doc spoke about his companions, her gaze kept ahead as they walked further into the tunnels. She wasn't sure where to go exactly, given the nature of this 'world', particularly the fact that the layouts are constanly changing and that no path is ever the same, which made it quite difficult to navigate the place. They would have to rely on luck to find one of these fire exits.

"Oh, wow. What a character, I'll say! Ah, if only we have someone like her, being able to call up someone and they'd provide you the time, weather, and temperature. That'd really help people a lot here." Ace then laughed aloud when he mentioned the Operator having quite the ego. "Oh don't I know it. In fact, I know someone who's also full of himself. Difference was that he thinks he's the most attractive guy to ever exist."

One word caught her attention, however. Earth. Ace turned her head to him rather quickly. That earth? Obviously she's aware that the earth he mentioned was most likely a different one than the earth she came from, but still...

"Huh." Ace said aloud, turning left at the corner and avoiding some puddles that were on the ground. "I think I might know the place you're talking about. Anyway- those kids you mentioned made you go back in time just because they missed their friend's birthday?" She gasped incredulously, shaking her head in mild disapprovement. "How trivial. If I ever dare to such a thing, I would've been sent straight into Tartarus before I can even blink! But overall... it's quite the story you have!"
