You live in a modern, average world. Perhaps you attend school. Perhaps you work a 9-to-5. Either way, every day to you is pretty ordinary, few out of the normal things happening to you.
One day, news channels begin to report stars in the sky abruptly blinking out, like a light being turned off. And with each star, they seem to be getting closer to Earth. Conspiracy theorists panicked. Most people laughed it off as a coincidence with sound scientific justification somewhere.
And then, one day, the sky was filled with dark clouds over your city, and strange creatures began to grow out of the shadows. People ran in panic, you were told to evacuate.
... And then a strange rabbit man dressed as a wizard appears in front of you, tells you his name, and promptly stabs you to death before you wake up in your bed.
What an odd dream... You might think to yourself.

Magic is rare, but not unheard of. Mundane characters may or may not believe in it. Magical characters may form small and exclusive pockets for study, protection, etc.
Modern
Combat is woven into the storyline and could come to the forefront if the characters seek it out.
Romance isn't outright desired, but can happen if we decide the characters are perfect for each other. The romance won't be important to the overall plot.
