Mordecai (played by JohnSturheit) Topic Starter

She was staring back at him, eyes distant without recognition, and without any reaction to his voice. The doe was in a worse state than he'd ever seen her--granted, he hadn't known her long. But it definitely didn't seem usual for her.

He had to try something else. He came closer, one small step at a time, constantly watching her for a negative reaction to him. If she displayed reluctance at his approach, he would stop right where he was.

If he wasn't stopped, he knelt close in front of her, where she'd slid down the side of the hearth with her hand extended. Mordecai looked at the hand, hesitating. She'd allowed him once to take her hand to guide her out of an unexpected exit from the diner. He was afraid that touch would cause her more fear. After all, in his own experience touch just caused a faster, more dangerous spiral... but on some occasions it had worked. Maybe it would help bring her out of the darkness she'd suddenly found herself in. It was worth a try.

Reaching out, his large hand wrapped around her soft one--a stable and secure hold, but one that would give way if she were to pull back. At the same time he continued to speak calmly. "Look at me, my friend," he implored, "listen. You are safe." The worry had long since left his eyes, replaced by thorough understanding, as well as subtle sadness. Mordecai was resolved to sit there with her for hours if he had to.
