The Summer Splash Festival was lively despite the afternoon heat. Music poured across the park from a nearby stage, while children zipped between booths, their faces painted and fingers sticky. The air was filled with the smell of barbecue, kettle corn, and sunscreen, all swept along by a warm breeze that did little to cool the swelling crowd.
For most people, it was a day of fun. For Aaron, it was a workday, just a bit more colorful than usual.
The medical tent was set up near the center of the activities, positioned for easy access from nearly any part of the festival grounds. Thankfully, the day had been quiet so far. There was a scraped knee here, a headache there, and one overly eager teenager who turned a water balloon game into a crash course. It was nothing Aaron couldn't handle.
With no urgent emergencies demanding his attention, Aaron settled into a folding chair just outside the tent. A cold bottle of water rested in one hand while his eyes scanned the crowd out of habit. Years on the job trained him to notice the little things: a child wandering too far from their parents, an elderly couple looking for a place to sit, the signs that someone might be struggling in the heat before they realized it themselves.
Still, he found himself enjoying the atmosphere. It was a welcome change from sirens and smoke.
A burst of laughter erupted from somewhere near the dunk tank. A group of children raced past the tent, nearly tripping over each other in their excitement. Aaron shook his head with a smile and took another sip of water.
For now, everything seemed peaceful.
Whether that would last remained uncertain.

"Yo! Is this where I get my face painted? Or, wait, that's gotta be free just for the kids, right? Can I pay you? That... uh, shark, looked really cool... I saw someone with it earlier... with the teeth..." Miretta pointed to her own jaw and bit the air gently as an example. She held a stick of barbecued sausages in the other hand, but she made sure her face was free of grease before she came over. She had wandered this direction when a passerby pointed towards this tent (she was pretty sure) for face paintings.
