The sun had almost set, and a cool autumn breeze rustled the dry leaves overhead. For the first time in weeks, the gate to the pumpkin patch was open.

Wendell had nearly finished setting out the decorations. He took a step back and surveyed his work. A few (rather rushed) jack-o-lanterns, some fake cobwebs strung up around the gate, and a couple scarecrows from the field adorned the entrance. An old wooden sign, in the shape of a pumpkin but with peeling orange paint, leaned against the fence nearby, proclaiming that it was finally open for business.

It wasn't great. But for such short notice, it wasn't bad. A little sparse for his tastes, but not bad. The worst thing about it, really, was that he knew he could do better. He felt like he'd missed most of the season, and now he had a field full of pumpkins to get rid of and only a week left to sell them all.

Wendell took a deep breath, and tried to stifle the growing feeling of nervousness in his chest as best he could. Then he adjusted the cobwebs one last time and went inside to wait for customers.
