A traveling illusionist pulls up in your small town. While you haven't heard of him, your neighbors sure have. This magician is named Favonius; and he is a little different than your average man.... Well.... Bird?
Later on in the night, a stage is set up in your town square, and there, that's where the magic begins....

Magic is rare, but not unheard of. Mundane characters may or may not believe in it. Magical characters may form small and exclusive pockets for study, protection, etc.
Renaissance
Distant war may be part of the setting, but any scenes that happen to involve combat will likely be summarized, not played out in detail.
