Luther was a very quiet man who lead a very quiet life. He had a cosy little job at the library, stocking shelves and checking out books for people of his sleepy hometown. Life was peaceful. Life was good. Life couldn't be more tranquil if it tried.
...and Luther loathed every second of it.
The phony smiles, his stuttering voice, the myriad of papercuts and ink stains all over his hands. It really was miserable. He couldn't help but dwell on this as he milled about candle-lit bookshelves, re-organising the non-fiction section with a bored grimace. Working late. Again.
As he turned back to collect another stack of books, a window shattered and something small and round whizzed past his face with an audible screech, smashing into the far wall and embedding itself between the bricks. Luther screamed of course, stumbling back into the shelves upon shelves of books as he clutched his chest, trying to calm his hammering heart.
He stared at the steaming crevass in the wall and slowly crept towards it, still desperately trying to catch his breath. Part of him said to run, not get too close. Could be dangerous after all. What if it was magical? What if it was a trap? Someone might be trying to assasinate him. Could be Old lady Willis. She always had it in for him, miserable old woman.
However, there was a considerably less sensible part of Luther that told him to take it. To pry it from the wall, clutch it to his chest and never let go. It was a strange compulsion. A foreign one. But in the end, that part if him won.
He spent what felt like hours trying to wrench the stone from the wall but he finally did it. He stared, mesmerised with stone, strangely enjoying the rat-a tat-tat of his heartbeat. It was something different. Something exciting!
"Finally." He whispered to himself and at that precise moment the stone flew from his hands, soaring across the room and back out the window. For a moment he stood there, stunned before turning on his heels and making straight for the window. The one interesting thing that had happened to him in months, in years, was nor about to get away that easily! He leapt from the window and landed in a crouch before blundering after the stone.
