Melina Rose Collins (played by spider_pig_girl)

OOC:
My basic idea is that the fictional city of Fairless is made up of humans and gifted people, and the neighboring city of Lovejoy has purged itself of all gifted people, but no one is exactly sure how. They just all disappeared, and now they're looking towards Fairless the same way... Where did the gifted ones go and what's Lovejoy's plan?

BIC:
A house on the edge of suburbia, right by the forest. For an organic shapeshifter, this was the perfect place to live to fulfill all aspects of this confusing thing called life. A development job with the city government, a home all to herself, a place to freely run, shoot, and shift... This was as close to paradise as Melina was going to get. But something was stirring in the air outside. Ingrained animal instincts piqued her interest, and she turned on the TV in time for a news bulletin.

The too-made-up news anchor barred her teeth in a fake grin.
"Good evening Fairless, this is Claire Diviny with News 8. Our top story, and breaking news, comes from city hall. New developments on the investigation into the Lovejoy disappearances have been brought to the Fairless Police Department's attention. While a news conference is being prepared for later this week, a police spokesperson has issued the following statement:
We urge all Fairless citizens to check their email. If email is unavailable to you, the same information will be posted to our website no later than tomorrow morning. We are moving forward with precautionary measures and would like our citizens to be in the loop about it all. We want to emphasize the importance of the safety of all of Fairless, and will keep everyone updated as more developments continue."

Melina had already seen the email mentioned, but just to be on the safe side, she opened her phone and reread the whole thing. It had seemed all business before, when she read it at work earlier that day, but with the police statement in mind, it seemed much more sinister.

TO ALL CITIZENS OF THE CITY OF FAIRLESS
The FPD has uncovered new intelligence regarding the Lovejoy disappearances. We believe it to be the work of the newest facility opened earlier this year, located on the island visible from the Fairjoy Bridge that connects the two cities.
Until recently, that island had been unnamed and uninhabited; a natural landscape. But as of January, the island is in possession of the Lovejoy government and the facility soon after began construction. Its completion coincides with the beginning of the disappearances.
The building itself is named the Mutant Municipal Research Headquarters. Mutant, as many of our citizens know, is a slur given to those in the gifted and non-human community. The island itself has been dubbed "Loveless," and while it seems a harmless companion to the Fairjoy Bridge, we believe it carries a much different tone.
IF YOU OR A LOVED ONE IS A MEMBER OF THE GIFTED/NON-HUMAN COMMUNITY:
We URGE you to keep your distance from the city of Lovejoy and the island altogether. Do not go out at night alone. Be extremely vigilant, and keep an eye on the children of the community who have yet to fully achieve control over their abilities.

The email went on to describe many, many different scenarios and the recommended actions, such as an abduction, evacuation, or even an invasion of a Lovejoy militant service. Melina scoffed at a few of these suggestions, but in the pit of her stomach, her animal instincts knotted up and told her to remain even more vigilant than she normally was.
Evan Orvelle (played by spider_pig_girl) Topic Starter

The air pressure increased slightly, as if more perspiration had begun around the town. Evan felt the weight of the water in the air and tried to dissipate it, but he was only able to do so much. Laying around the house for weeks had done nothing positive for Evan, his psyche, or his ability. Melina had taken the news just as hard, but he wasn't her brother.

Ever since Alex had disappeared, Evan had lost a lot of weight, sleep, sanity, and pretty much anything else the universe could suck out of him. His electric bill this month had been almost nonexistent. He would just lay in bed, adding even more sketches to his already disturbingly large collection, and pretend his soul didn't exist for the fear of the pain that would come with accepting it did. Melina had stopped by a few times at first, but as both were familiar with the feeling of loss, she'd wisely kept her distance for three weeks.

That was, until today.

A knock on the door confused Evan. His bills were paid, he hadn't left the house to break any laws, so who the hell was knocking? A peek through the peephole answered his question.

Oh yeah, he thought, I have friends.

Well. A friend.

"Come on in!" he shouted to Melina, fully aware that the door was locked. A yellow ladybug slipped under the door, and Evan watched as his friend morphed back into her human form.

"You could just as easily open the damn door," she chastised.

"Stop your whining, you got in just fine."

"Have you seen the news?"

Evan raised an eyebrow. His house was completely dark, save the few beams of sunlight trying to claw their way through the dusty curtains.

"What do you think, smartass?"

"Alright, alright, that's enough tough talk from the emo kid. Look, I may have a lead on where Alex went, but you're gonna have to look at a phone screen. Can you handle that, or do you only have night vision?"

Evan's entire demeanor changed with the mention of his younger brother's name. His posture straightened and he snatched the phone from Melina's hand. She had the email pulled up, and he scoured it for clues. Once finished, his already pale face was white as a sheet.

"The island?"

"I know. It says for us to stay away, and while I morally and halfheartedly agree, the other half of my heart aches for us to see Alex again. And maybe, if that facility is connected to any others in the world, we can find out more information about anyone else in our community who's missing."

Melina wouldn't say the name, but Evan knew she was talking about her best friend and his girlfriend, Amaiya, who'd been missing for a much longer time than Alex.

"So what do we do?"

"We can't do anything at the moment, but as soon as I have more information, I'll let you know. And... Evan?"

He met Melina's forested gaze.

"You should come over sometime. You know, for dinner, or a drink or something, to catch up. I feel the same fear and remorse you do, but you've got to give yourself a break once in a while. If not for yourself, or even me, then for them. It'd kill them to see you like this, you know."

There was a lot of truth in Melina's words, Evan knew, but something inside him had broken when Amaiya disappeared and completely shattered after Alex. He didn't even know if he'd be whole again, but those tiny pieces were clinging to the hope of their discovery, and all the information that would lead to them.
