It was dark. That was the first thing she noticed when she opened her eyes. That was the first thought that popped into her head when she woke up. It was dark and it was cold and she was hungry. Was this really all she'd been reduced to? This nonsensical being who didn't even know where she was? It would appear so.
She sits up, glances around warily, her jade green eyes scanning for any hint of movement in the empty darkness of the woods. A soft breeze tugs her long, dark hair back, exposing the noble planes of her lightly tanned face. She pulls her knees to her chest and wraps her arms around them, stifling a small sob. How had things gotten so far out of hand? Why was she here and not home? A tear slides down her face as she squeezes her eyes shut, memories of the last…had it really only been six hours? Those hours felt like a lifetime…a lifetime since the end. An eternity gone by as she'd slept fitfully on the forest floor. The laughter she'd shared with her family seemed ages ago and she wasn't entirely sure she was sane anymore.
The questions echo through her mind, bringing a heavy weight to her chest, stinging pain behind her eyes. Why did you run? Why did you not stay? Why are you alive and they: dead? What makes you so special? Her lips tremble and she lifts bloodshot eyes to the star-ridden sky. However much she wanted to ignore the voices, they had a point. Why was she still alive? What was her purpose?
That was the night Diana Pierderi swore she'd reclaim the throne. That was the moment she pledged to avenge her family, to bring destruction to those who'd destroyed her world.
But let's rewind, shall we? Let's start at the beginning.

Maybe this was going to far, even for a lifelong assassin like himself; to kill off the entire royal family was no small matter, but he had been paid well, so that was all that mattered. His employer had hidden himself in a dark robe, but Neemus could tell he was one of the wealthy nobles, possibly one who swore close loyalty to the king himself; he didn’t need to see who it was, only what they wore, how they spoke, how they walked, and however they went about their way that let him know who they were.
At the moment, it wasn’t important; what was important was killing every member of the family, even the children of his royal highness. Under normal circumstances, and for a normal person, killing children was cruel and cold-hearted, something only the most horrid people would do. He was not normal, though, and he knew it; to him, they were just names on a list, nothing more. He’d been instructed to use whatever method he deemed necessary, but that was not an easy decision; would he use knives, poison their food, kill them individually and blame the members of the household? In the end, he went with the poisoning of their food, using a special brew of his own creation mixed with the deadliest alchemical components in the world; he called it the ‘Wrath of Sithis,’ a deadly poison that would kill a man if it was ingested, or even touched. It was untraceable, indistinguishable from normal ingredients, and had no taste, color, or smell.
While he was poisoning the meal of the royal family, he saw a little girl by the door, watching him add the final touch of the dish. He sent her away, but had a feeling he’d regret letting her go. He focused on the task at hand, adding the poison and leaving the first chance he got.
