MasterWinter

Hi all, Winter here.

So. As the title suggests, this topic is geared towards things you watch. That is if you do. Be it movies, TV, DVD, web vids etc.

Here's what I mean.

I'm in my 30's, and I've come to realize that I cannot enjoy watching things the way I used to do so.

Example: When mom and I watch How To Train Your Dragon. Mom and I keep pointing out the stupidity of the movie, while trying to remind one another it's a kiddie movie.

First thing: When Toothless roars at Hiccup after being freed, Hiccup technically should be deaf in his right ear. But he acts like he didn't just get roared at in his ear.

Dragons supposedly have a limited amount of fire power, and then a human can supposedly come in and beat the sh*t out of them. Like Stoic did against the Nightmare dragon.

A wooden/metal shield is supposed to protect them against a dragon attack, when technically it would burn/melt because dragon fire is THAT powerful.

I could go on, but it would take a lot, and I think you all can get the idea. This isn't the only movie I have these issues with, but it comes to mind easily.

Anyone else have this issue?
Yep. Yep. Not just age for me, but also GETTING INTO WRITING. Ever since I started writing stories with people via RPs, I notice things that I never would have noticed before. Mainly when characters are too cliche and when plots are too easily predictable. That kind of stuff didn't used to bother me before. And I do see more plot holes than I used to, more like what you're talking about.

On the bright side, I notice actors and actresses mannerisms more.

Also, different things are funny when you get older i think.
For me, yes. I may still be pretty young, but I have come to..not enjoy a few things that I used to love, such as playing with friends. I know that sounds generic, but I'm more of an antisocial introvert now..annnd I'm a bit socially awkward.

I find that, besides kid shows, I can't really think of anything I used to love but now hate; but I can think of things that I used to hate and I now like!

I used to hate D&D and everything like it. I thought it was weird (well, child me, surprise! I love it now).

Live action movies and shows. If it wasn't animated, I would NOT watch it. This changed when I was about the age of six, and I went to see Mirror, Mirror (I think it was) with my family. That was my first live action movie. I still prefer animation, but I can definitely say that I have thoroughly enjoyed live action movies before.

The type of YouTube videos I watch has changed over the years, as well. As a young kiddo, I used to watch a lot of gamers, specifically Minecraft ones, as expected (i.e. DanTDM and more that I just can't think of). Now, I find myself watching a lot of review videos on movies and comedy videos, sometimes even news.

So, yes, I believe so. As a kid, I used to prefer the stuff that seemed 'fun.' Now, I don't find all of it fun, and some of it that I did not find fun, I now love.

I think for kiddie movies, I'm less inclined to be picky about the specifics; I mean, if it's an awful movie / show, I won't watch it. But like, re-watching old spongebob episodes that I loved when I was younger? Or watching my favorite disney movies and rugrats and etc. etc.? I feel like I laugh even harder now than I did as a kid.

However, I feel like whereas I used to watch 'adult' shows / movies with a level of obliviousness that let me just ... watch these things, as an adult, I'm now way more picky. These are adult shows meant for an adult audience, and yet they're either awfully written and/or have so many plot holes for actually no reason. The worst.

Nice to see I am not the only one with this issue.

I can't even watch Fat Cat (Garfield) cartoons or movies anymore.

I barely start a Fat Cat cartoon, and I easily pick up what stupidity will happen and I stop watching it. Literally doesn't matter if I've seen it or not, or not in a very long time, and I will stop watching if i figure things out quickly.

I've gone years without watching something, like Fat Cat movie 1 & 2, and when I had on the first one somewhat recently, I kept skipping chapters of the DVD because I remembered parts.

It's a shame really that one cannot fully simply enjoy things.

I even recall one time when I went to Disney Land when I was in high school, on a trip with the choir for a competition and we were in Los Angeles, CA. I went on the Haunt Mansion ride, and when I looked up at one point, I saw the wiring for stuff.

Okay I realize that part about Disney Land isn't watching, but just felt like pointing it out.

I can agree with you about the 'adult' shows. Even those get to be boring.
As a teenager, I enjoyed watching films like Mad Max, Bill and Ted, etc, anything which had a 'cool' element to it like motorbikes, rock music, surfer dude cliches, etc. Now, I look at them and think what the hell was I thinking? How could I like that? There are still some movies and TV shows that I watched from those days that I can still watch now (and I'm talking about things from the 80's and 90's here and that should give you a clue to my age), but those which have a 'cool' element to them now make me cringe. Also, in regards to some of the cartoons I liked as a kid, if I watch them now I can't believe how daft some of them were, either because of the silly antics in it or scientific inaccuracies. (Like characters being able to breathe/survive in space without a space suit/being in a space craft, etc.) I think Back to the Future would fall into that category, too.
