This is completely hypothetical. Hypothetically, (in an attempt to relate to people more) let's say I wanted to get a Pokemon game for the DS. Where should- I-I mean would I start?

Just pick up a copy of Sun or Moon. There is no continuing storyline between games so there is no harm just skipping straight to the newest one.

The storyline in a little unusual compared to the other games but it has all the Pokemon, best graphics and lots of ease of play features the other games don't have.

There isn't much difference between Sun and Moon execpt a small handful of exclusive Pokemon.

the original red, blue and yellow are all available for the DS now too, and you can transfer the pokemon you catch in it to pokemon bank so you can take them with you in other games.

.... I should do that.

i'd say X or Y version...
they are more traditional than Sun & Moon with the gameplay...
but i'm a big fan of pokemon so...

Black White arguably has the best plot.
Diamond Pearl Platinum has the best Pokémon balance.
Sun Moon has the best open world.
Ruby Sapphire Emerald has the best legendaries
Firered Leafgreen has the best villains

This is all pretty objective but from my experience this is what I will tell you.

All the games pretty much happen in different timelines, thus there's no actual continuity (save for sequels like Black White 2 or Heartgold Soulsilver Omegared Alphasapphire). Thus you pretty much have the freedom to start anywhere and easily get immersed, since there's always a tutorial in the beginning.

However, if you seek a challenge, look towards the earlier generations. I notice with each game, the difficulty gets progressively easier.

For a DS pokemon game, Soul Silver/Heart Gold all the way. The spritework is amazing, the story is fun and overall it's a pretty good remake of the original gold and silver games.

I have noticed that it's an expensive game because of its age. So, I also recommend Diamond and Pearl.
You could also consider pokemon reborn. It's a really good pokemon mod that uses pokemon from the first 6 gens and lets you choose from all of the starters. It has a really good plot and unlike regular pokemon is more of a solid pg-13+ rating. It's also much harder then your normal pokemon game.
