Like some people who start Christmas shopping in early July, I occasionally start planning for an event weeks in advance and then.... forget about it until it's really almost time, what about you all? Lately (since yesterday or the day before) I was thinking about what to do for the Summer Soiree... I actually started thinking about it right after the last one, because there are so many good ideas, it's just all in how I want to execute it! Is it any good for a character I love playing? Is it good for the growth of my writing, in some way specifically? Is it really a sustainable roleplay, and will people want to play it? That sort of thing! Treehouse, picnic, manor, fairy forest..... Elven city, anime universe? Anime elves in a treehouse in the woods, but it's a giant tree manor, with a picnic!!? Oh, what about Wookies? Kashyyk is totally cool too, if we're doing a tree village.... hahaha.

How do you decide what you wanna play? Do you plan long term or make something up on the spot? A bit of both?

discuss. :)
Summer Soiree varies for me year to year as does Halloween. I sat both out last year but am thinking about doing them this time around. Traditionally, I pick one of my characters from an existing game and do a non-canon scene. I try to do something that can accommodate as many people as possible in terms of types of characters and writing level. A year ago, I made up a silly character just for fun and I'm going to use it for these type of open activities going forward.

Just try to come up with a fun synopsis that is easy to follow and join in with. For me, these activities are just one shots and a chance to take a break from my main games. However, sometimes, you run across someone you click with and you might find a good potential partner. You can always continue from where you started or think of the Summer Soiree as a "pilot episode" and start something fresh based on your test RP during the event.

I haven’t had chance yet to get on Summer Soirée, but it’s a similar event to Meet Cute. And I think it will be same idea for me :
Impulsive improvisation

If not searching for a specific play, this little doe is open to various plots, styles, lores…. And (what I read about Summer Soirée) I believe here it won’t be different, just let it happen. Even if she’ll only be like a feral doe joining a peaceful beach party and enjoying sand, sea and surfer’s beach music, anything is possible.
And if you want to prepare in advance any kind of plot, nobody will stop you and the more you’ll be excited to show the world your ideas.
But (psst🤫) don’t divulge too much, others might inadvertently steal your ideas or be influenced 😉
I’m sure there will be players enchanted by your ideas 😊

As far as participating in Soirée threads; I read the starter and see if it grabs me in some way. I then write up a reply to introduce my character. It's pretty spontaneous for me.

Yes, keep your planned Soirée cards close to your chest. I planned ahead to do a Summer Soirée a couple years ago, and my mistake was talking about it a month in advance on the private group I was running at the time. When I logged in to post my prepared idea on Soirée day, lo and behold, there it was, the very same idea as the very first Soirée thread posted. Someone in the group scooped up my idea and posted it as soon as the clock ticked over and the Soirée was opened. They obviously wanted to get their thread up first before me. Of course, I couldn't post mine because I would have looked like a copy-cat. I didn't start a thread in Soirée that year after all, but I did use my prepared starter in the group and had good participation. I also participated in that Soirée thread. Sadly, the originator quit replying to people who came to participate and left everyone hanging.

I did host a Halloween Trick or Treat thread one year, and I did host my original idea in the Soirée the next year, and they both were fun and I deemed successful. :)
My May trip to Michigan in 2024 was a big inspiration for my Summer soiree post.
Usually I am just goblin-crafting some patch work of ideas up to the last moment.

Big Planner Energy…

Wow, that's such childish behavior of that person?? I'm sorry that happened to you :c

This is my first event of the sort on this site, so I'm just really excited to see what's going to happen! From the straggler Halloween/Christmas threads in the open forums, it looks really fun c:
@ Bruinen - It worked out on the private group that year as the Summer BBQ we had was awesome!
I did go and read my intro into that thread, and I was restrained in my snarkiness. XD

@ Milk Theef - Using some RL events/situations is a really good way to get a story going!

Thank you for the encouragement/caution! <3

These are great base tips for reference when I get lost in a roleplay. Thank you! :)

Dawnia, It sounds so awful to get an idea stolen like that. I'm glad it worked out okay in the end.

I can't wait to see what everyone comes up with, I'm always surprised. Maybe I'll see you guys in the summer role-play threads this year! :D
Of course, since everything is run by so few people and one, magnificently strong, captain, here, sometimes I think maybe we won't get one event or another. Like, it could get canceled. I have to save myself from potential disappointment! XD But I think everyone is reliable enough that they'd say something in time. So I'll just go with the flow.

Ah... I want a popsicle.... 🍧
