Kyndel (played anonymously)

I'm brainstorming a character for a future project and would love some ideas for her, especially for ways that will make her easier to play, given that she might end up being a pretty standoffish character!

The name Kyndel is a placeholder. Feel free to suggest other ideas.

  • is from a magitech setting with radio, trains, etc.
  • is from a niche religion (or a niche sect of a larger religion) that is against hedonism
  • is charitable, but also proselytizes
Perhaps to make her more playable, her belief against hedonism could lead her to assist those who have fallen victim to greedy or self-focused individuals in the society? People who owe money to a rich bank, for example. While the religion could target morally innocent people who show hedonistic traits, there surely are a lot of bad people who also do the same. Her sanctuary from them could be important!

Also, if she's charitable, maybe she has a few people that trust or rely on her despite her proselytizing? Maybe an apprentice that looks up to her for challenging the norm.

I think playing into standoffish/self-righteous but protective of those she believes are victims to the society that supports hedonism is the best way to keep her both in that sort of personality, but also allows for openings with other characters.

Ok I see 7 capital sins, I see a very giving and charitable person on daylight, but a soul hunter at night gathering the souls of those that succumb to hedonistic worship totally.
As the souls are used to keep going magitech devices, there are often ritual murders that denounce one of the 7 capital sins, the ultimate hedonistic act.
She/he during the day is member of the Salvation Army, has become a cold high graded member (colonel).

When I think of standoffish good natured characters, I always picture that they're people who don't really know how to express emotions well but are very kind and caring in their actions. I imagine this character struggles to connect to people emotionally, doesn't know how to take a compliment, but prioritizes everyone around them at every turn. They love to cook for others, they are attentive to what the people around them say and remember small details (such as favorite colors, hobbies, preferred clothing, favorite treats, a special childhood memory etc.) that can be acted upon in the future. Think of collecting a trinket that is related to a hobby or a memory and quietly gifting the item. Or making the extra effort to obtain that favorite treat even if it comes at a stupidly high expense.

I love all of this! Thanks everyone! One thing i failed to mention is that I am a-okay with this character being an antagonist or even a villain-- that was my intent-- but I want to give her some depth and nuance too.
Their religion's sect could have a unique type of magitech compared to the rest of the setting that is solely focused on practicality. However, their more powerful machines are fueled by engines that runs on what they consider blessings from their gods/spirits/etc. These can be war machines, if they wage or participate in any, or entire buildings for things like hospitals and libraries that use analogue tech to house crucial information for them.

Maybe they need "sacrifices" of hedonism to be blessed. These can range from things as simple as mental and physical abstinence. However, perhaps Kyndel and maybe a few others find out antagonism against hedonism could provide better fuel, such as inflicting anguish.

Kyndel could be actively trying to fuel these machines for the purpose of benefiting specific people she cares about who are also a part of her religious community, regardless of others' well-being. These people may or may not support or even be aware of her villainy.

Perhaps she has this sense of 'eat or be eaten' about the concept of her religion. Therefor, she genuinely does extend a hand of generosity to outsiders. She may or may not be kind about it. This is only if she believes they can be "saved," or maybe even "fixed." If they react to her preaching with any level of hostility, especially from characters who don't agree with her destructive mindset if it's revealed, she sees them as no more than fodder to assist the ones she cares for at that point onward.

Ohohohohoho there is no greater feeling of betrayal and antagonism than realizing that someone went out of their way to get close to you, and you thought they actually liked you, only to find out that they have been deeply judging you and only wanted to try to get you to trust them so they can proselytize to you about how everything you're doing is wrong. If you're looking for a hook to get her to break through being stand-offish and don't mind being the antagonist, that's a good one!

I'm working on getting Kyndel finalized. A lot of the ideas here are great, but will inform how I play her moreso than what goes on her profile!
