Fort Balion

unnamed-4.jpg

An imperial outpost located upon the world of Arpat Secunda functions as a forward operating base deployed to the minimally colonized Arpat system, there are perils a plenty across this reach, this was the first world where the Imperium made contact and the sector carries the namesake. Arpat sector is an immense theatre of operations stretching out across multiple worlds, while the imperial machine never tires or stops, Balion is often the first and only respite before being deployed into the mayhem, it is where strategic treatises are struck, inquisitorial retinues compile their findings, space marine cohorts stop to refuel and an a vital logistical and military operations node for the Astra Militarum. Still more eccentric figures find their way here, tech-priests seeking lost technology upon these distant worlds, xenos bands and rogue traders whom enjoy a tedious diplomatic peace.

unnamed-17.jpg

Owing to a fragmented anomaly attributable to a necrontyr artifact, none of the important characters who appear at or around Balion can truly die, with defeat being only momentary before seeming resurrection, the Balion highlands are a site of conflict and cooperation. Acknowledging this rare anomaly has meant interactions here tend to exist outside the usual tedium of warfare that dominates the galaxy, indeed even beings from the larger multiverse and from otherwise opposing factions can find some measure of an uneasy coexistence, to remedy their concerns they are offered sanctioned and adjudicated duels, still more seeking to hone their skills can be offered small contracts to assist the efforts to support Fort Balion and most would find it agreeable to sample the Amasec and wide cuisines that cater to the many rogue traders which use this base as a place of rest.

Welcome to Fort Balion, A sprawling Astra Militarum base that doubles as a speak-easy and rest space for everything 40k related. I ask that you remain respectful of the patrons, exercise your writing and plot to your hearts content.

A number of ground rules

1. Please remain respectful of the patrons, a little jest and witty mockery as part of writing is acceptable but maliciously directed comments and unnecessary saber rattling are not.

2. Use conflict as a source of writing and character development - battles in Balion can either be fought in arena-style (1v1) or battlefield-style (army vs army) they will typically be adjudicated by a moderator or one of the relevant authorities within Balion. Death is impermanent in Balion so your character will simply resurrect at a node even if they are killed. By default any player controlled character is considered a main character. Writers are expected to set terms for their duels - by default this is best 2 out 3 - at 3 seperate 1d20 rolls.

3. Explore the firing range, the bar, the leisure chambers, the gym, the library, the verdant hills or the armory to your hearts content.
Ami Arpatia (played by Girfactor)

((I was wondering if we could continue from the other thread. Do you want to start it again or should I can make a short post??))

She looked at her captain, Rolne, expecting to use the warmachine after passing with flying colors as she stood there while the other privates were tired from trying to catch up with her agility. Sir! What's next?" she asked as she stood in attention with her arms to her side.

Is he going to respond soon? she thought as she stared up in the air, her eyes on the rafters. She was excited, but she kept her composure with a stern look on her face before raising one hand as to salute him with respect.

The Imperial War Chant

Gloria
Gloria Militarum!
Gloria!
Gloria Imperium!
Gloria
Gloria Imperator!
Ad Astra
Per Aspera !
Ad Victoriam
In Aeternum!

Morale was high that morning, as it always tended to be at the advent of battle, these men and women had been starved of the right to use their weapons for far too long. Amidst the regulated and orderly symphony of marching boots, one sound was that of Arpatia's. This was it, the first baptism by fire. She had been placed in a squad, one of five, she dined with those men, they shared a barracks room, they had come to know each other, it was a surprisingly human ordnance by any regard. She was no longer an orphan, she was a child of war. The Astra Militarum treated her well, although the rigid hierarchy made her salute more often than not, the citizens offered her respect or in the very least fear when she passed by, she was salaried and she would always get a meal and board. Training had been vicious and unrelenting, her structure having grown more rigid and muscled as a result of being pushed as so. In truth, Arpatia had earned her right to be called a soldier, but would she keep it now.

One by one, the squads began to depart from the main march, she saw them move towards Chimera vehicles where commanders awaited, their vicious hawken gazes spurning further discipline from the ranks. A man she had come to know as Gault was one to frequent conversations with her, tell her about the broader imperium, she would have quickly realized everyone here had a different past, a different life and a different name, they had chosen, like her, service to the Emperor, a military life... some faces however did not return, of what became of those who failed bootcamp little was obvious, some were relegated to manufactorum workers, some were put in penal colonies due to a severe lack of discipline, most were probably lying in some ditch on the outskirts, the imperium didn't waste resources on those who could not earn them... in the grim darkness of this age, survival was vested in every act... you earned your keep, nevertheless, Von Drakenfell tended to keep his troops better than most, Mordians were known for their attention to detail, just this morning her personal dataslate had registered a congratulatory message from the Lord General, wishing the Balion 5th good luck on their first venture.

" Rise and Shine Girls... show time "

was the uncouth bark from Captain Rolne, he was a bit rough around the edges, a harsh man but surely one that got along with the soldiers, maybe his rough humor tended to get a little getting used to but all in all, he wanted to see them come back alive, he issued a swat to Arpatia's back with a subtle grin and a nod, it was vaguely respectful... he commended her grit for making it through training and putting in her best, every task. She would have recognized the vehicle, it was her squad's personal chimera, a beast of a carrier.

unnamed-26.jpg

" Well Recruits... this is it, serious business that is, gather round and receive your brief. As you lot well know, I had you stock the Chimera well in advance, forgot an aidkit, a field latrine, ammunition... too bad... you're on your own now, which is why I emphasize the value of audits, not that you listen... Arpatia, you were fastest to load the shells in, to everyone's surprise, you might be built like a gretchin but you've got the spine of a grox and I think we're all in agreement...

Private Arpatia will be taking the hullgun, as you well know, that is where the armor is thickest... Gault... given your past as a manufactorum machine operator and your command of the equipment as well as the exceptional score on the imperial heavy vehicles obstacle navigation course... you will be taking the driver position... Royhaven... you're the best marksman here so you'll be gunner, Arpat pattern chimera's use a predator pattern turret, a lot more mechanical, you'll have a helmet sight inside, you're the vehicles eyes, Arpatia will assist when necessary... Arpatia, situational awareness, use the side slots when necessary to look behind and at the sides of the vehicle when the gunner is engaged, nothing worse than being caught off guard. Caelus and Iordan, mortar duty.

Resistance is expected to be light but it is present, stagger your route incase of mines, stay clear of vantage points and tall buildings, use suppressive fire to maximum effect, you are responsible for Imperial armor, if you lose this vehicle you will be subject to a deduction of 10,000 thrones each, which will place you well within debt to the Adeptus Administratum. The enemy has fortified positions across a short expanse of industrial sprawl, foxholes, makeshift bunkers and a holdout in a derelict construction patch of hivesprawl. They will be fielding ridgerunner technicals and are believed to be supplied with xenos weaponry. Use cover liberally, our intel suggests they will outrange you, so get in as close as you can. Private Arpatia will review your tactical objectives with you. For some of you, this will be the last time we see each other... put in a good word with the big man for me... may the Emperor watch over you, Guards, dismissed... go forth and make the Emperor proud.

The men waited on Arpatia to give them the briefing on the objectives as was customary, before the squad spurned into action, making final checks on the weapons before cramming into the vehicle, it was hardly a comfortable fit. Atleast Arpatia was given a proper chair, it was hard not to feel like a sardine in a tin, before her was a behemoth of a chunk of metal, with brass shells as wide and taller than her hands. The almighty heavy bolter. The beast had only a slight degree of traverse and was difficult to move around, it was mostly intended to be facing forward and could rip through light cover and walls with ease, it would suck to be anything at the other end of that and few kinds of armor could sustain repeated punishment from it.

Gault took his seat next to her, bringing the behemoth to life, scanners came to life, then screens, before a loud rumbling roar caused the metal chassis to shake, the machine spirits rousing the engine to life. She couldn't help but feel a sense of power and immortality, they were in a fine warmachine. Gault seemed eerily calm, you had to be in this line of work, he was a heavy transport operator in a past life, few could deal with that pressure upon the manufactorum assembly lines. He popped a Lho-Stick (cigarette) between his lips, offering one to Arpatia, if she so wished, he looked through the tiny vision slit, a loud whirr sounded above them, it was Royhaven, rotating the turret and making a check on the systems, as the rear doors sealed shut, the vehicle became dark inside, apart from the glow of the screen and the small amount of light through the vision slits. A tap on her shoulder from a chipper Gault.

" Best seat in the house Lass, you needn't worry, i've seen those dozer blades cause plasma torches to fail. Arpatia, those rounds are heavy, they don't fly flat, you're going to have to angle upwards for range, think of them flying in an arc or trajectory, barely any use aiming that thing since you've got bolts to spare, you're going to have to eyeball it for the most part and send bolts down range till they connect, best to use it to suppress, light bursts to range out and shock the enemy, prevent them from using cover and moving. We're about 40 clicks out... Let's get rolling

Battle Theme 1

" 10 clicks out, keep your eyes open "

Gault's mannerisms suddenly became a lot more tense and serious, the light-hearted chatter had ceased, at first nothing except the deafening hum of the engine and the creak of the tracks could be heard within but now there were new sounds, unsettling and distant, the wail of beams screaming over head, the click of fully automatic fire and the occasional explosion, which within the confines of the vehicle sounded like somebody had thumped against the side, on the outside things grew a lot more smog-laden and smoky, mud on the ground, you couldn't see far... vox-radio chatter sounded... it was Royhaven.

unnamed-29.jpg

" Hrahah... would you look at those poor boys in blue, marchin' across the mud... looks like their vehicle broke down a few clicks ago... well better them the cannon-fodder than us "

Gault scowled

" Focus Royhaven, focus... we're not on the road anymore, we're in the thick of it, didn't you see the little lightshow they just gave us... shit... gunflash, far right... Arpatia now... ARPATIA... NOW !"

a smack on the back of her helmet, in the far distance, bright flashes, gunfire in the distance, she could just barely make out the guardsmen, trotting along in the mud before, light speed beams of blue, tore through them, she saw one of them have his face melt clean off, it wasn't noisy, just pure death... they dropped like flies... some of them hoarded behind and around the vehicle... loud thumps and sizzles sounded on the outside of the armor.

" OHHH F*** !! "

A salvo of rocket blasts smashed into the ground surrounding them, causing Gault to swerve the massive vehicle, throwing the entire vehicle in disarray, she could hear the whole thing creak before the chimera resumed motion, backing up and turning as a rapid flurry of projectiles, like bright flashes slammed against the side, some exploding and deflecting off, the armor ate them up but it was an innately unnerving sensation to hear small fire-cracker-esque explosions go off within earshot.

unnamed-32.jpg

" Fuck me Gault, you think you could be a bit softer on the old girl... targeting cogitators have acquired targets... going hot in..3... 2.. Eat Shells You Scum ! "

TCHUNK.. TCHUNK... TCHUNK... TCHUNK...

unnamed-33.jpg

The radio chatter from Royhaven gave way to the blasts from the autocannon were deafening within the confines, the shells issuing a metallic clang as they fell onto the floor below, rolling around, every round fired you could feel in the ribcage, a testament to imperial power. Gault did not cease, giving an annoying groan as they pushed forward, but the carnage on the battlefield was obvious... there had to be 20 bodies... many barely recoverable, some reached out for help... giving out primal desperate cries... but orders were not to stop for anything... this was war.

" Those aren't imperial weapons i'll tell you that much "

Muttered Royhaven over the radio,

" That doesn't matter right now Royhaven, whatever it is, we send rounds downrange and exterminate it, approaching battlezone proper, ETA 20 minutes to designated perimeter, keep a look out... Arpatia, send some rounds down range, any buildings you see... any sign of movement... you ask questions later... we probably won't see what we're hitting... but we will practice suppression with utmost prejudice "

Gault added, keeping an eye out for the recruit, this was merely a glimpse of what was to come... Arpatia had view of some buildings and a few scurrying blips in the far distance, Arpatia had a view within gunrange, Gault nodded, she knew what she had to do. The advance was adrenaline inducing, they had only a few moments to response before a deafening blast threw the vehicle in disarray, this time it shook the consciousness, everything went hazy, lights flickering, the blurry noises of Gault clearing out, shaking her shoulder.

" Arpatia... Arpatia are you alright ?... fuck me... we hit a mine, it was just the dozer blade this time.. "

The matter was interrupted

" F*** me Gault, and you were a HMO ?... some driver you are... get us the hell out of here, hold on... cogitators are picking something up, WE'RE LOCKED GAULT... GET US OUT OF HERE MAN !"

Just then the whirr of jets overhead, and bright explosive flashes in the distance, vox-chatter clearing

unnamed-30.jpg

" Victor... Victor... Strike delivered... how's the view from the ground, guards ? "

Gault laughed as he picked up the radio

" Well I'll be damned, the Emperor's wings... our thanks to you, 5B-03 out "

" Roger 5B-03, we are authorized to perform sorties, note the augur-frequency, you may request support upon designation, if birds are up they should be able to deliver a bit of firepower, VV-22 out "

Another vox chatter, it was Royhaven.

" Good on the Aeronautica Imperialis to visit us for a change, onwards to glory !
Ami Arpatia (played by Girfactor)

Arpatia walked with pride as she walked amonst her brothers and sisters of war. Her pride to be here was great as she had dined and shared many things with her sisters and brothers as she stood for the Imperium and the Emperor of Mankind. She felt empowered knowing she was no longer an orphan. She now had a purpose in life instead of running from the law. Now instead of running from the law, she was the law. She had met many officers along the way and have even proved her worth. As well as civilians either feared or rejoiced of her coming as she marched like a true soldier. She would not displease. She will gain scars, but that was a badge to her. She would never dream of dying or being placed back as a civilian. That was a true dishonor to herself and her peers.

One in particular officer was Gault. She had grew fond of his stories of his victories as she was inspired to one day have her own stories to tell the younger soldiers as she hoped to gain ranks and even become a Sister of Battle. It was her dream. Standing there in salute to Mordians as she awaited the briefing from the other woman as she stood in respect, her arms planted on her sides, her now muscular frame showing through her armor. Needless to say she was style agile, but the training had made her stronger. She knew she was ready for war. She would show them how she could handle herself. She knew she would lose some of her brothers and sisters, but that was the life of the military. She would not mourn for their life for they would not want her to do so.

She was first to awake from sleep only due to being used to waking up early when she was a civilian, "Sir, yes, Sir!" she said as she fixed her bed military style before she heard the briefing from Rolne.

Feeling a swat to her back, she knew that he had grown onto her knowing she had successfully succeeded at every obstacle thrown at her. As she stood there, she looked at her squads Chimera, a beast that could take out the enemies in moments. She was ready to use it's firepower. It was making her thrilled as she thought about. "Sir, I cannot wait to get into it and take the scum by force," she said with pride as she saluted to him with respect. It became more frequent as she would salute her superiors as a soldier. It was out of respect for them.

She stood there with a slight grin on her face from his comment about loading first before everyone else. Of course she took what he said as a compliment. "Sir, I am here to serve you and the Emperor of Mankind. It was the least to show my prowess as a female soldier," she said cautiously as she stood there in salute as she knew that soon they would get their first action. She was going to come out of this alive and if she gained a few scars, it wouldn't bother her the least. She was ready nonetheless. It was going to be exciting to be on the field of battle.

She took her orders to mind as she was to take the hullgun that would be equipped to her as she would be ready to fight off the hordes of enemies with it. She would be back up just in case if required. She nodded to Rolne in understanding as she would definitely use the weapon with pride and honor. She looked at him with pride in her eyes as she was ready to load into the Chimera and mow down their enemies and take over the fort for the Emperor of Mankind. The excitement kept boiling in her as she held her arms behind her now as she took a military stance befitting a true soldier as she was ready for more briefing from her commanding officer.

Being told to brief the other men about what to do made her nervous. It as the first time in her life she was given the opportunity to give orders to her fellow soldiers. Was she destined to go up a rank? "We hit them hard and without them expecting us to come! We will come back alive, you hear me!" she barked at them as she pointed to the Chimera. "Let's make sure this warmachine is in great condition! I will be here to help expect it. That is my expertise. We will make sure to bring the hurt to them. Like Rolne said, we need to make sure this comes back unscathed or else it comes out of our allowance." she said as she watched the others go into action as she went with them expecting the weaponry. After she felt it was satisfactory. She looked at the satisfactory chair as she smiled at the thought of sitting there.

She took the seat next to Gault as she heard the engine come to life as she became excited to hear the engine made the loud noise that would bring the fight to the enemy. Looking at Gault offer her a Lho-Stick, she gladly took it and took a drag of it as she felt privileged to be inside something as this warmachine she would gladly share with her fellow soldiers. Once the doors shut, it became dim lit with barely any light. Feeling Gault. She knew everything was in order as she stared at him with that glint in her eyes as she waited for him to say something to her.

"I am privileged to sit next to you, Gault,"She said briefly as she listened intently about the Chimera and it's firepower. Listening to him about it only made her excited. She had a feel of the weaponry before they would move out. Listening to him explain to her what to do would be easy for her. She had shown that being a weapons expert was evident. She would make a surprise attack on the enemy and if she had to get out, she would use her hidden laser pistol at close quarter as she would blow their heads off their shoulders as she would take the fight to them. Only if allowed to exit the machine. With her weapon next to her, she would definitely bring the fight to them. "40 clicks out. Sounds reasonable. We definitely should start moving!" she exclaimed as she awaited further orders from the veteran.

As they were 10 clicks away, she got ready for combat as she heard only sounds from the Chimera. As they were close to the battlefield, she would hear beams overhead as she got ready for combat. Her gun next to her as she looked at Gaul, her demeanor changed in an instant as she brought her weapon to her as she aimed it forward waiting for the enemy to show their ugly faces. The sight was blurry, but she could definitely see through the smog and smoky environment as she looked straight at Gaul. "Let's take the fight to them. No prisoners only dead enemies," she said as she heard Royhaven speak through the radio. "Sir! We are ready!" she said to him as she clutched her weapon and looked down at her pistol as she was ready to use it at any chance given.

She ignored the other vehicle that had broken down. They must have not been experienced enough to keep it under maintained as they walked through the mud. "Poor souls," she said as she knew something bad was ahead of them. She was ready even before Gaul gave any orders to her.

Seeing gunflash from the farright, she hear Gaul command her as she open fire to the enemy, her guns firepower whirring through the air to the enemy as her face showed a grin as she got into it. Seeing the other men get gunned down by the enemies firepower, she kept opening fire as she screamed in delightment as she heard Gaul yell Oh ****, which she ignored as their Chimera kept moving forward. "Boys, stay focus! We're coming out of this alive. They were unfortunate. Mourn their loss later!" she barked as she kept firing her weapon at the enemy. She wasn't going to back down now. This was excitement she hasn't felt for a very long time.

Hearing the enemy try to stop them, the Chimera swerved slightly, she hearing the vehicle creak before resuming motion, her eyes staring around as she kept an eye in front of her as they took some fire from the enemy.

She heard the radio whirl as she heard the familiar voice. She ignored it as she kept firing at the enemy. Seeing the dead and dying, she kept going forward with Gault. "Casualties of war. Not much we can do for them," she said as she heard some cry for help. It hurt her, but she had resolve. She wasn't here to babysit the weak. They will be remembered at least for fighting for the cause of the Emperor of Mankind.

"Definitely doesn't sound like it," she said as she kept an eye on the enemy. As she saw one, she would fire off rounds taking their heads off their shoulders as their Chimera crawled onwards through the battlefield.

Hearing Gault tell her to fire regardless if there was anything there, she gripped the weapon in her hands as she turned it and just started firing whatever moved without speaking a single word he said. It was as she was in a daze as she got into the fight. She wasn't going down today. She was going home with the rest of her comrades. She was going to make sure they come back and enjoy some warm food and ale. And she was going to pay for them all for victory well done. She stared ahead as she had the gunrange as she open fire again. Feeling their vehicle get hit, she felt the vehicle in disarray as she felt it shook violently in response from the firepower from the enemy. She had seemed unconscious at first as she felt her shoulder being shook by someone. Her ears was ringing from the hit they had sustained as she heard a familiar voice speak to her.

She shook it off finally as she made it clear she was fine to Gault. "Damn! Mine? How bad is the Chimera?" she asked Gault as she examined their vehicle accordingly.

She didn't fear death at this point as the radio whizzed through. They had to get out of the battlefield as she got her bearings back as she grabbed a ahold of the weapon again and open fire while she awaited pick up. She was still bringing the fight to their enemies making sure she took out as many as she could beforehand.

As she kept firing the guns, she heard more noise as she heard planes up in the sky and explosions nearby. They were saved. The cavalry had arrived. "It feels great!" she piped up as her eyes watched as the enemy got mowed down from where they stood. Hearing the chit chat, she ignored it as she felt a scratch on her right cheek. Her first scar and she got excited from it.

"ONWARDS TO GLORY!" she screamed as she turned a 180 as she open fire again. This time she was going to make sure they were all dead. "We're going home alive, boys. We are taking this fort by force!" she said as she laughed loudly as madness set in her head. She was not afraid to die. She looked at Gault with a grin on her face as she fought alongside him as he drove their vehicle to victory.
