Dakota (played anonymously)

The idea had started the way many of Dakota's ideas did: casually and without much planning.

What began as a simple social media post inviting a few friends to spend a Saturday at the beach had grown legs of its own. A local surf shop shared it. Then a marine conservation group he occasionally volunteered with reposted it. Someone designed a flyer and pinned copies throughout San Diego. Before long, what had been intended as a relaxed afternoon among friends had evolved into a full-fledged community gathering at La Jolla Shores.

Dakota didn't mind. If anything, he was happy to see it happen.

Summer had always felt like something meant to be shared. The ocean certainly was.

By midmorning, the beach had already begun to fill with people. Volleyball nets had been staked into the sand. Several food trucks lined the nearby parking lot. Coolers and folding chairs dotted the shoreline while local musicians tuned their instruments beneath a canopy overlooking the water. A small booth promoting marine conservation stood near the boardwalk, offering information about local wildlife and upcoming community projects.

The centerpiece of it all, however, remained the ocean.

Small groups gathered near the shoreline as beginner surfers received instructions from volunteers carrying brightly colored foam boards. Others ventured into the water on paddleboards while more experienced surfers waited farther out beyond the break for the next set of waves.

Dressed in board shorts and a lightweight tank top, the San Diego native looked perfectly at home beneath the summer sun. A surfboard rested beneath one arm while a relaxed smile seemed permanently fixed to his face. Every few minutes someone stopped him to ask a question, request directions, or sign up for one of the informal surf lessons he had offered throughout the day.

He greeted each person with the same warmth. "No experience required," he laughed as he handed a foam board to a particularly nervous newcomer. "Trust me. Worst case scenario, you fall into the ocean. There are worse places to land."

The day stretched ahead with endless possibilities. Surf lessons, volleyball games, food, music, swimming, and eventually a bonfire that would carry on well after sunset. For now, however, Dakota planted the tail of his surfboard into the sand and surveyed the growing crowd with quiet satisfaction.

The invitation had been simple.

Come spend the day at the beach.

Apparently, a lot of people had been looking for exactly that.

Setting: Modern Urban Fantasy

This thread is intended for a modern urban fantasy setting, though you're welcome to adapt your character to fit however you'd like. Supernatural elements are welcome, but I would prefer to keep things down to earth. Think urban legends, supernatural creatures, demigods, vampires, shifters, and other low-key fantasy elements rather than world-shaking magic, godlike displays of power, or large-scale supernatural conflicts. The goal is to enjoy a relaxed summer gathering and the interactions that come from it.

There is no minimum post length requirement. We're all here to have fun and meet new characters.

There is no posting order. Feel free to jump into conversations and interactions as they happen. The only thing I ask is that everyone be mindful of ongoing scenes and respectful of other participants if their characters are actively interacting.

This thread will remain open through the duration of the Summer Soiree event. That said, real life always comes first, so I may close the thread earlier if necessary. Likewise, there is absolutely no pressure to reply at a certain pace. Participate as your schedule allows and enjoy the beach.

Here are a few ideas for how your character might participate:
  • Taking part in one of Dakota's beginner surf lessons.
  • Bringing their own surfboard and spending the day chasing waves with other beachgoers.
  • Joining a game of beach volleyball or helping organize other beach activities.
  • Relaxing on the sand with friends, a good book, music, or simply enjoying the ocean breeze.
  • Exploring the nearby food trucks, snack stands, and local vendors set up for the gathering.
  • Performing as one of the local musicians providing live entertainment throughout the day.
  • Volunteering at or visiting the marine conservation booth to learn more about local wildlife and environmental efforts.
  • Paddleboarding, swimming, snorkeling, or participating in other water activities.
  • Working as a lifeguard, photographer, vendor, musician, or another local helping make the event possible.
  • Attending the sunset bonfire later in the evening to share stories, roast marshmallows, and meet new people.
  • Simply wandering onto the beach after hearing about the gathering through social media, community flyers, or word of mouth.
These are only suggestions. Feel free to bring your character in however you see fit and create your own fun along the way!

Kyria (played by Stormiedayz)

Kyria arrived later than most. By the time she stepped onto the sand, the beach had already transformed into something alive.

Music drifted through the warm California air alongside the crash of waves and distant laughter. Volleyball games erupted near the shoreline while surfers moved in and out of the water beneath the gold glow of the descending sun. The scent of salt, sunscreen, grilled food, and bonfire wood mingled together into something unmistakably summer.

For a moment, Kyria simply stood there. Ocean blue eyes swept slowly across the gathering as the breeze toyed with loose strands of dark hair around her face. There was something about the ocean that always settled her. Something steady and familiar beneath all the noise.

A faint smile touched her lips. She had not originally planned to come. Yet somehow, after hearing about the gathering through passing conversation and social media posts shared one too many times, curiosity had eventually won.

Bare feet sank lightly into warm sand as she began walking along the shoreline instead of immediately joining the larger crowds. The hem of her loose white cover up danced around her legs while shallow waves occasionally reached forward to brush against her ankles before retreating once more.

People were everywhere, but no one truly demanded attention from her. That alone made the atmosphere easier to enjoy.

Her gaze briefly shifted toward the surf lessons farther down the beach where beginners attempted to balance on brightly colored foam boards with varying levels of success. Laughter followed more than one dramatic wipeout. The sound drew a quiet laugh from Kyria herself.

Eventually, she wandered closer toward the heart of the gathering. Near enough to hear conversations and music clearly now, but still carrying herself with that same calm, observant energy. She seemed perfectly content just taking everything in instead of trying to command attention. For now, that was enough.

The breeze coming off the water cooled her sun warmed skin as the first hints of sunset began spilling gold across the waves.
