Chivalry

Historical Overview
Before the Age of Man - [0 Anno Hominum]

Before the sun and the moon passed in cycles over Aquila's sky, in the time when chaos resided in all things, there existed the unknowable being. This one formed the earth into a shape that pleased him, and then, by the works of his hands, the land and all that walks or crawls on its surface was made. The being's hands were hot and strong like branding irons, burning creatures out of the dirt, and he breathed life into every beast's sculpture, and Aquila was that breath. The being's two hands he placed in the sky, making two kings; Pyros, the sun, to rule the day, and Glaeslin, the lesser sun, to rule the night. And for them both, he made a home, and in that home was Aquila's spirit.

When the first day dawned, we were enslaved to dragons. The dragons were not like the created beasts nor were they formed by the gods; instead, they came from beyond, like the unknowable one, yet they shared nothing of the being's mind. They were as wicked as the being had been inventive, and all manner of despicable things were forced on our people. When they warred with one another, as such traitorous minds are prone, our proud people were subjugated to be killed without cause, thought, or care. Villages were wroth in flame. The steam of death blotted out the sun, and the rivers were turned red with the slaughter. Like cowards, many humans perished as they fled, but these men must not be remembered in scorn, for the dragons were a terrible foe; stronger, smarter, and more deceitful than any other on our green earth.

As for those of us that raised their weapons high and fought, the dragons believed they would be sure to slaughter.

But they did not know we humans have allies in high places. From Heofon, the bright blue and white lands where spirits go, descended the hallowed three -- the gods that rule wild nature. Their blessing was cast on the weapons of the bold and the honorable. By their sanctified might, we humans slew the serpents until not a one of the foul beasts yet lived.
Freed from tyranny, the men of the Earth multiplied and spread their dominion over the land.

Mankind was proud for his accomplishments, and in the time since the Slaughter of Serpents, we went out of the dragon’s arching cities, and the gods covered those unholy places in dust until it was so that not a trace of the old monuments could be found. In three ways mankind splintered; to the North went men to worship the gods in high places. To the West, the men that saw fertile land. To the East, men seeking a chance to grow in the strength of their arm. In all directions, mankind formed homes out of the land -- high towers of wood and carved stone.
War Among Men - [107 Anno Hominum]

In those days, as it is today, from the coast of the Camelion Sea to the Burning Mountains was the land called Arodlan, that is, the Land of the Bold.
The land was named by Ricard the Leonhart, and he was a mighty man, for his territory was vast, covering the whole coast to the Scinan River. He controlled the sailors and merchants; from his hand they came and to his hand they returned.

In the East, at the rim of the Charred Mountains, another mighty man had made his name known. Goetz von Berlichingen was a man of valor, a bold man that kept back the monsters which would at times venture down from the alps. He and his band of men made towns and cities that burrowed into the earth for iron and bronze.

Now, there was another group of men in the forests lining the Scinan River. They were lawless men; they swore no oath to any Lord, and revered not the knowledge of good and evil written on all men's hearts, instead doing only what was right in their own eyes. These evildoers intercepted trade routes between King Ricard and King Goetz, and spread false rumors, causing one to blame the other for his losses. Ricard's sword turned against Goetz, and Goetz against Ricard. The conflict to follow swallowed up hordes of men in death.
The war would have raged until all had perished were it not for the prophets that came down from the North and forged a bond of peace between the two sides. The master of prophets in this age was Gawen, and due to the miracles of the men he brought with him, his words were heavy.

At Gawen's urging, a bowl of blood was drawn between these three leaders, for the sake of ceasing the conflict then and any conflict to come. The borders would be maintained, and the ruling of land would be kept to their own bloodline, but in all other matters, they three would be as one.

The years persisted in peace until mankind grew slack, for he had not war to temper him.
The Black War -[998 Anno Hominum]

Strangers that would have been met with sword were welcomed with open arms. This proved folly when foreign men descended from the Eastern Mountains, saying, “Peace, peace, all is well!” Their clothes hid their malformities from us, yet they were welcomed as honored guests in Berlichingen’s halls, by reason they had a good tale to tell. Come nightfall, they repaid the King’s good nature by imposing a forceful union on his wife and his daughter. At daybreak, the corpses were found, and the strangers were brutally executed.

There was no declaration to follow, no messenger come down from the alps. One mooncycle passed and a mass of monsters were seen on the horizon. They fell on the border towns and left none alive. The Vinoviloc Knights were untrained, and the spontaneous attack trampled through their fortifications and spread deep into Arodlan. In their brutal way, the Foresworn, for they were so named, overcame the might of Knights, and spread a slue of evil over the land.

It was then that the dragons emerged from Heofon's Mount. They united with us against this wicked threat, and by our combined might, we overcame the Foresworn and pushed them back through the border and into the Charred Mountains.
Modern Day - [1010 Anno Hominum]

A pact was made between us and our old enemies. With the urging of the faithful, the three Kings of men extended an arm of concord towards the serpents. “Come, let us learn of one another. Send one of your own to live among us,” The kings did say. “If he would come humbly and seek reconciliation, friendship may make a bond between us.”

“This is well with us.” The dragons replied, and unto the men of the Earth was given a serpent from their midst, to spend a year in penance for the weighty crimes of old that time remembered.

Timeline
  • 0 Anno Hominum Humans emerge from the corpses of dragons as victors. They spread out across the land, Northward pious, westward opportunists, eastward mighty.
  • 30 Anno Hominum The priests of Gawen begin writing, establishing the prayer-weaving techniques and setting the chivalric code of knighthood that would be developed and clarified in the centuries to come.
  • 107 Anno Hominum The formation of the three orders, Vinoviloc, Leonharte, and Cantar
  • 300 Anno Hominum The Black Mountains go silent; no monster would appear again for years to come.
  • 600 Anno Hominum Political council forms in the midst of the 3 orders, presided over by the Abbas. Galt founded as a neutral territory ruled by three Aquila priestesses, the Oracles.
  • 800 Anno Hominum Cold war between Viloviloc and Leonharte sparked by unfaithful Leonharte queen. (Trade route interception, espionage, military research)
  • 900 Anno Hominum A route between all three territories leads to Galt is finally finished; the capitals are all connected at last. Feasts and Tournaments happen in greater frequency.
  • 998 Anno Hominum The Black War Begins (against the Foresworn) The Vinoviloc fight alone, and ask for no help until their gates and formations are tarnished. Only the Cantar send aid, and the Leonharte withhold their hand until the enemy stands at Galt’s gates.
  • 1011 Anno Hominum The Black war is over; Foresworn may lurk in Vinoviloc territory, but their main fighting force has been sent back from whence they came. Dragons and humans now make a tentative pact to see if peace will last between the two.

    Chivalric Orders
    1. Vinoviloc: The warriors, the mercenaries, the militant. No matter how well you talk, or how kind you are, it all means nothing if you have nothing to show for it. Results speak for themselves. This philosophy of practicality runs all through Vinoviloc culture, from their worship of the sun god Pyros to the work of a peasant at his farmstead. As a culture, they consider flagrant displays of emotion unseemly and look down on charitable acts as foolish wastes of time.
    2. Leonhart: The merchants, the poets, the artisans. In their coastal cities, in their manifold mines, throughout their booming markets, the amassment of wealth piles on. They are those willing to do anything for money, and anything which gains money is a worthwhile endeavor. Class mobility is nigh impossible, as those who currently grasp the greatest wealth use it to exploit their lower class, and press Glaeslin's doctrine of birthright dogmatically, and is propagandized in their public plays and epic songs. Even so, an exploited peasant in Leonharte often lives in more comfort than the self-sufficient peasant in Vinoviland.
    3. Cantar: The hermits, the scholars, the the magi. In high mountaintop hermitages and wandering the vast forests of Canticland, the territory the order rules is an uncertain patch of wildland and walled civilization. Though their people are dogmatic and well-educated, the evergreen forests house hidden clutches of bandit clans, which wandering knights are hired to hunt down and retrieve their heads for pay. Since in Arodlan, magic is exercised through a prayer said in faith, in Canticland hermitages reside the mightiest priests, whose magic knows no peer.

    Characters

For this RP, I was hoping you, the players, would make characters specifically tailored for the world. Together, we can plan them out so that they're relevant to the plot and are able to have interesting relationships. I'm looking for four other players, since a group of five is just enough to have an interesting handful of diversity, but not so much that there is no unity between us.

Now, then. The list of characters I've compiled:
    • A dragon selected by his own kin to pay for the crimes ages old.
    • A foresworn spy capable of suppressing their monstrous blood.
    • Three knights, or knights-in-training, there to escort, protect, and see to it that the dragon pays penance.

The plot will both direct the players and be influenced by them.

Anyway, if you're interested, drop a post :)
Magic 70%
Magic is fairly common. Players and NPCs important to the tale may have it. Mistborn.
Technology 20%
Iron age
Combat 60%
Combat is woven into the storyline and could come to the forefront if the characters seek it out.

Details: Freeform, adjustable length posts, long-term RP partner preferred.

Thekaleidoscope

I'm interested in being the Foresworn spy.

Awesome :D Heyaa Max!

Do you think Dazeth would be able to squish himself down to a humanoid form? You can determine the causes and reasons for it yourself if you like, as in how he looks, whether he can still breathe fire, how strong he is, and all that.
I guess for this RP I could do that :)
Hmm, this seems very skyrim orientated or was that the idea?

Regardless, I would certainly love to give it a go. Would Silas work?

You may or may not believe me, but I have yet to fully play Skyrim. Farthest I ever managed to make it was slaying the first dragon, because by then I realized that it wasn't going to be nearly on par with Dragon's Dogma.

Dragon's Dogma is amazing.

This tale is largely derivitive so that you players can add on your own lore to the basic rules I establish. A freeform world, if you will, and a collaborative story.

And yeah! I think Silas could work, with some tweaks -- like the Sharingan, for instance.
Don't you dare bring up Dragon's Dogma in my presence, I played the demo and fell in love with it but was never able to play it due to Capcom's no PC policy.
Arisen is coming to PC though so my dreams can finally be fulfilled.

I'd be glad to add Silas!, His sharingan is merely for fantasy and other more fable-like RPs.

It's already out on PC! :) and nice, soon I'll start up a PM wherein we can discuss world and character, like which order Silas is from and what that may entail and so on :) glad to have you aboard!

Phoenix, I'm really not sure. Your character seems to have a lot of anime baggage that it brings to the table, but I'd hate to just send you away. Would you be willing to construct a medieval style character specifically for this rp?
Arianrhod

Hmmm... maybe I can tailor the Murutha to fit into this world? Muruthine knights? :D
