Hushed rumors and local warnings tend to keep people from adventuring too far out into the middle of nowhere— past the comfort of civilization, way out in the murky depths of the witch’s bayou where ordinary folk don’t always return from.

Of course, those are just legends. And what’s Halloween without a little thrill?

Push just a little past the boundaries of the town’s main hub and you’d find yourself a little wooden house — not unlike any other little wooden houses — that stood out as a beacon during Halloween’s crisp nightfall, warm and glowing from the lamp on the porch. If the legends about the “cursed” Leroux family were completely accurate, Amédée would have been deep in the most desolate corners of the swamp, a half-human beast that lingered and waited for any stray travelers so he could kidnap and curse them. Little did the locals know that the witches were living right under their noses. Still, people seemed to be wary of stranding too far away from the town when this area was witch territory, especially on Halloween night.

But that wasn’t stopping Amédée from attempting to draw in any stragglers— no malicious intentions at all, just a silent dare to see who was brave enough to come out this far. The night had been quiet, but Halloween was just getting started.

On the porch railing, a small bowl of treats sat next to the lamp. Amédée was nestled in an old wooden rocking chair, softly rocking it back and forth in lazy absentmindedness. His swamp-green eyes weren’t fixated on the road and any possible visitors, but on the gigantic snake laying across his shoulders and coiled around his neck like a loose scarf.

The snake, as dark and black as coal, was gently resting its head in the palm of Amédée’s hand, glancing around with something that almost seemed like mild curiosity. The two fit comfortably together, a bond that resembled a man and his old loyal dog.

context

  • the lore at the beginning is just meant for exposition. you don’t have to follow it, but i would appreciate it if you did!
  • amédée is originally from a universe that takes place during the early 1900s, but for the sake of the event, just assume it’s modern day. i don’t even know if they really had halloween back then lmao.
  • re: the snake, amédée is a snake shapeshifter. however, through witchcraft, he’s mastered the ability of basically splitting his soul in half so he can be conscious in his human body while the snake can manifest in the physical world. if that’s confusing, it’s not too important for this thread, it’s just an explanation for why the snake is there. tldr; the snake is a part of his soul, just in the physical world. the snake also doesn't belong to any certain species and doesn't necessarily behave like a normal snake.
  • u can call him “amee” for short.
Evelyn had been warned not to come out here, but she'd been curious and she was confident of her own abilities. And it was Halloween after all. This was a time of celebration, not devilry. The noises of bugs and the calls of night animals echoed through the dark woods. She was dressed just as what she was: a witch. Not the most original, but she hadn't wanted to go all out while traveling. A typical witch hat adorned her purple hair, and she wore a black dress that was belted at the waist and ended at her knee. Stockings of black and purple went down into some tall boots that had a more practical than feminine look.

She'd enchanted her hair so that it had grown longer, and she carried a wand. There was even a black cat trailing after her. It was a large cat, with yellow, intelligent eyes. Evelyn had not transported herself by walking all the way, instead teleporting at a point down the road and then strolling the rest of the way. The types out here would be unorthodox, creepy, but brimming with possibilities. Like a cauldron about to boil over. She just had to make sure she didn't get burned.

The young woman and her cat popped into existence, and then walked up the road. Their manner was open and casual, as if this was a bright sunny day rather than a dark, creepy night. Seeing the man in front of the house, she turned down the walk up to his abode. Her eyes fell on his appearance, the snake and then the treats that had been set out, in that order. "Happy Halloween," she told him, her voice was measured, not too high or low.

Amédée heard the approaching footsteps, but made no move to acknowledge his visitors' presence until he heard the creak of the wooden porch steps. Even then, his attention still appeared to be entirely devoted to the snake around his neck, seemingly oblivious to the world around him. There was a beat of silence from him, a bit of a drawn out pause, before--

"Bonsoir," He finally greeted, his gaze remaining fixated on the snake for just a spare moment before his focus trailed upwards..lazy in his demeanor, something like molasses.

A smirk toyed with the edges of his lips, his eyes shining with excitement. "Happy Halloween," Amédée returned, and with that, he gestured towards the untouched bowl of treats with his free hand. "Help y'self, I got more than enough."

The snake showed no signs of any hostility or defensiveness, only curiosity that piqued when it noticed the cat following behind this witch. Its head popped up the slightest amount, no wavering in its docile behavior, as its own intelligent yellow eyes met the feline's-- a silent gesture that was the snake's form of offering an olive branch.
Evelyn was used to snakes, though she'd seen very few people that were so intimate with them. It did not cause her to hesitate, but her cat did stop. A low growl could be heard in it's chest. The witch turned, crouching a moment and making an inviting noise. She stood patiently, waiting for him to respond. People had drawn out responses in the South. The calls from the bugs and the birds, the lingering humidity despite the night, it was all familiar to her.

"Salutations," she told him with a smile, stepping up onto the porch. "I might sit for a spell, if that's alright," she said. It was odd to stand while another sat. If another rocking chair was not available, she would summon one. "Happy Halloween. My name is Evelyn. It seems the evening is finding you well." Her cat had calmed itself, it stared back at the snake and sniffed at it before moving on. The feline lighted into Evelyn's lap, settling down and purring contentedly. The young woman stroke it's back and scratched behind it's ears. "It's a marvel, how close you and that snake are. I've always thought reptiles couldn't form a connection like a cat or dog could."

Any hope of friendship that this snake seemed to hold was crushed by the low growl that built up and trembled like an earthquake from this cat's core; the snake, as if scolded, jerked back and clung tighter to its owner, and, in a moment of faux bravado, let out a short, weak hiss as a response. It was less of a hostile reaction and more of an offended one-- an empty threat.

The animals' sounds wedged a fork in Amédée's brow, cradling his snake a little closer as he sent an apologetic look towards his visitor.

"Ah, don't mind him. He don't bite, no, he's just bein' a crybaby."

The porch was lined with several different rocking chairs; such a large, tight-knit family would need a little area to socialize, after all, and every chair except Amédée's was currently unoccupied.

"Oh, of course!" Amédée wasn't expecting hardly anyone to come at all, let alone ask to sit for a moment. His family would probably scold him for being so welcoming to an outsider. Not a lot of people wanted to get caught gettin' all friendly out in the witch's land, and it wasn't wise to just be so accepting of anyone that came around this part of the bayou. Regardless--

"Make yourself at home." Despite the cat's initial hostility turning into something more curious, Amédée still kept a tight hold on his snake, just in case either of the two got any bright ideas. When it was obvious that the air had been cleared and the two animals were content with each other's presences, Amédée leaned back and relaxed, listening to his guest -- Evelyn -- with an amused glint in his eyes.

"I'm Amédée," He greeted. He wasn't quite sure how to reply to the comment about his snake, given that his situation with his snake was..different, so he decided to try and weave the conversation into something he favored.

"Your cat got a name?" He asked with a smile.
The fur on the cat's back rose as the snake hissed, it kept a close eye on the reptile. Evelyn ran a hand along the cat's back, smoothing down it's fur, wanting to smooth away it's fear. "She was alarmed at the sight of a snake, she isn't very tolerant of animals that aren't cats. I'm sure the snake has just unsettled her." Midna meowed, as if agreeing. It kept up it's purring, but didn't dare close it's eyes as a contented cat usually does.

The cat tilted her head when Amédée said the snake was a crybaby, a more inquisitive look sent toward the snake. Evelyn kept petting her cat, wary that the feline might decide to try and attack. "Her name is Midna," the witch answered. She picked up a treat from the bowl. "She is one of several black cats that I have." She helped herself to it, even though her parents would have scolded her for being so trusting of a stranger. Especially one like her current host. But it was Halloween, a time of gaiety when one should be able to live without fear. "Your snake have a name?"

Sensing that Amédée did not want to speak of his close bond with the snake, she looked up and down the porch. Observing the rocking chairs, she looked back at the other magic user. "Have your kin lived here long?" she allowed more of her native accent to slip through. When she was abroad, she kept it more subdued but she let it show even when she wasn't aware of it. She'd grown up only a couple of states over.
