This Year's Epic Week Playing Guide

Posted by Kim on April 24, 2019, 9:40am

Every year there are new elements to Epic Week, and things that change! Here's a quick primer to get you fighting fit for this year. :)

The birthday game consists of three main portions: Combat, puzzles, and collecting items. You can choose to get involved in only one of those areas, or dabble in all three! People working on all three aspects are required to advance through the plot, and each area contributes to success in other areas.

The Simplest Way to Get Involved

Explore the Labyrinth and Gaze at Forohfor Fortress every half hour or so to find random items. Even if you choose not to participate in other ways, you can donate those items to the armory to help other people who are questing. :)

Combat

Nearly everything during Epic Week is designed to encourage - or require - team work, and combat is no exception!
Most monsters are too tough for a lone player to take down on their own. Plus, monsters (excluding bosses) heal to full health every five minutes. This means you will need to coordinate with several other players in order to hit the same monster in the same short window of time to kill it before it heals.

Some of the toughest monsters can take up to a dozen players working together to beat them.

You get ten moves (stamina) per 5 minute window yourself. Use them wisely!

A new wave of monsters spawns at the top of every hour. During the early parts of Epic Week, when the weakest monsters are spawning, they only tend to last a few minutes. However, during the later parts of Epic Week, it's not uncommon for some monsters to manage to stick around for the entire hour. Especially when people are fighting them randomly, instead of coordinating with others! ;)

Different kinds of monsters are stronger or weaker to different types of weapons. Experiment to see what they resist.

You can coordinate with your fellow warriors in this year's official warrior chat

Getting Items and Weapons

After a few rounds of unarmed combat, you'll almost certainly want to get your hands on a weapon.

You can often get your hands on a poor quality weapon quickly by gazing at Forohfor Fortress.

But you're going to want a weapon that isn't so damaged it will fall apart after a few uses. One of the best ways to do this is by getting pummeled by monsters for a little while.

No, really! As other players win the Doubutt game, the weapons they've earned us will be randomly given out to people browsing the site. The more you've participated in combat, the more likely you are to find one of these random weapons. Weapon drops will become more and more common as the week goes on, and more and more people win the Doubutt game. :) Hey, maybe YOU can win the Doubutt game..?
You can also find Party Hats of Healing randomly as you browse around the site, which will restore a small amount of HP when you put them on your head.

But our fabulous playerbase isn't just content to allow loot to be given out randomly! Oh no, they've formed a group where they can donate their not-currently-being-used items, and take out the weapons or healing items that they need. You'll have a much easier time during Epic Week if you join the Epic Armory group, and give/take items from the treasury.

Super powers

We've had reports of people fighting in the labyrinths manifesting super powers, such as laser-beam vision, super dodge speed, super strength, and even the ability to heal themselves! It seems to be related to the strange, glowing crystals that are found throughout the labyrinth.

Unfortunately, most of us are quite new to having super powers, and there have also been reports of injuries from people laser-eyeing their own feet or super-strength-punching themselves or super-speed running smack into a wall. Yeowch.

Lucky for us, an experienced super hero is offering to help all of us learn to channel the power of these crystals appropriately. You sacrifice a little bit of raw power, but get the wonderful stability of knowing you are no longer in danger of blowing yourself up. ;)

There's also... another "person" offering to train adventurers, but... it seems like the world's worst idea. I wouldn't, if I were you... He is NOT qualified to teach you how to not blow yourself up.

Repairing Weapons

If your weapons don't have many swings left in them, this year there are TWO merchants offering to help you repair them: Aalto and Moa. They charge in party hats. Their prices change frequently throughout the day, and often one will have a better deal than the other.

However, they appear to have some animosity toward one another, and are offering loyalty bonuses of extra items to players who don't frequent their competitor!

Found a lot of items from exploring the labyrinth? You may be able to craft a boost oil to aid your friends in combat! Like most other things in Epic Week, these are meant to encourage team work, so you can only use your buffs on other people.

Riddles and Puzzles: The Obelisks

When there are no more monsters in the way, you'll be able to approach the obelisks.
  • Each obelisk has ten symbols on it.
  • Each symbol can be unlocked with a secret word or phrase.
  • As a group, you'll need to unlock ALL the symbols in order to complete the Epic Week plot.
  • How do you discover the secret word or phrase that unlocks each symbol? You'll get three clues.
  • Each symbol has its own forum topic where you can view the known clues and discuss what you think the answer might be. Just click the "View the known clues and discuss" link when looking at a symbol to be whisked straight there. :)
  • Remember, these riddles are designed to be challenging and require a group of people noodling together; don't feel intimidated if you don't know the answer right away. Every little idea can help.
  • Research is not cheating; it is expected!

Some symbols are puzzles relating to aspects of Epic Week, while others are trivia from popular works of fiction.

Overwhelmed?

Remember, the game will last for roughly a week, so you don't have to do everything all at once. :) Click around, explore, and enjoy! There's really nothing with permanent consequences, so it's okay to experiment.

Questions? This is a team work game, and most players will be thrilled to help you get into the swing of it. Commenting on this news post or asking in the Epic Week 2019 forum is a great way to get things clarified. :)
