Breast cancer is an awful disease that takes many lives. The women who survive sometimes get partial or full mastectomies, a procedure that leaves their chests painful and sensitive for a long, long time. Traditional prosthesis are heavy, sweaty and can't be worn for weeks after the surgery, and even then many women can't wear them because it hurts.

Knitted Knockers is an initiative of one such survivor who collects knitted prostheses, stuffed with a soft, breathable polyester stuffing, and sends them to women who need them for free! These Knitted Knockers are knit with 100% cotton yarn to avoid allergies and such, making them machine washable and easy to care for. They're light, feel much more realistic and give women confidence and comfort after the struggles they faced.

I'm currently knitting these and looking around locally for women who need them. I'm not sure what the demand is as of yet and the Dutch group who hands out these knockers is still new and has no info up yet, but I figured I'd post here and offer my knitting abilities to RPR members and their relatives and friends who may be looking for something like this. You can direct them to http://www.knittedknockers.org/ if you like, but the waiting time for them varies and they're growing in popularity. International orders are also redirected to the appropriate countries, and some countries don't have any organization dealing with this. I'd be able to knit a single or pair and send it out in a matter of days as long as I have the yarn at hand, anywhere in the world.

I'm not charging a single penny for this. I'll be taking money out of my own monthly hobby-budget to help out, though if you feel the urge to support you can donate money to me, to KnittedKnockers.org if you want to support them as a whole, or even order me the yarn directly. (Please ask me which yarn to order, it needs to fit special requirements!)

I'll have my first knockers knitted up by the end of the month (gotta finish some other stuff first and order the yarn) but they'll look just like the pictures on the site. The cup sizes will range from A to E cups and colors can be whatever (though my main colors will be beige/light pink as they're the most requested colors generally).

Thanks for sharing!! I finished my first knocker today. Making another today/tomorrow, and since they're my first (and imperfect) pair, they'll be a gag gift for my sister's birthday.

I actually just got word the other day that my grandmother, nine years after her mastectomy, was discharged from her doctor as 100% cancer free!

Though I wouldn't know how to approach the topic of knitted boobs to her...we can't even say the word 'sex' in her presence. But then again, she might be getting more lenient in her old age

You can always try "knitted prosthesis for breast cancer survivors who had mastectomies". That's what they are after all!

Guys guys guys! I finally knit my first pair of knockers for someone local to me! (Here is an announcement I made a while ago about these.)

To summarize the story, my group counselor knows of a breast cancer survivor who had a double mastectomy. Although she has silicone prostheses, the bras here are not covered by insurance and super expensive. She asked my counselor if she knew of any alternatives to the silicone, and my counselor told her that I knit cotton prostheses with polyester fiber filling which require no special bra. I told her I knit them for free, so this lady ordered a pair from me.

*jigs* I was SO STOKED to knit for someone nearby! I gave this pair to my counselor last Tuesday, and she'll text me when this lady receives the pair so I know if she liked it or not. I got a few euros from her to cover the materials (I take optional contributions of €2 per pair so I can purchase new yarn and filling to keep doing this) which was very nice of her.

Just an update!

I finally was able to find cotton yarn in a brown shade. I have a rose brown (beige) color for light skin tones and a dark camel brown for darker skin tones available to knit knockers with now.

My mom has a coworker who's a breast cancer survivor, but I think she got reconstruction done already. Regardless, this is awesome and sweet of you!
